Dear Paddy, I was casually watching this video when I got to the part of Tintin story and froze. I have an aunt in Belgium who was the right hand of Herge for nearly 20 years (until his death). Georges Prosper Remi - Herge - died in 1983 but the production team continued, and my aunt was running it for a good 30 years. She started working there in 1963 and quickly became Herge right hand woman. She was also responsible for growing the business in the 80's-90's especially and finally the curator of the Herge Museum in Brussels . When I visited Belgium in 1987 she took me for a tour of the plant where all the Tintin (and many others) were made. I will never forget the huge camera (12 feet tall!) which they used to photo the hand made slides of the cartoons (!) obviously this was changed to digital in the 90's. My dear aunt retired in 2007 and now enjoying life aged 87 in Brussels. Herge is still going under the management of his daughter. I will ask my aunt, but I am sure she knows the story of J.D Strange and this law suit.... fascinating!

My first trip to Bangkok i met a very funny couple from Scotland. They had been to Thailand many times, so being a newbie i asked, "Who the hell goes with all the ladyboys here?" And they immediately replied "Its all the British guys"....I said "I wonder why British guys are into ladyboys" and they replied, "Because they're half ladyboys themselves" ....I laughed out loud and over the years, I've found that to be mostly true.

I've met James a few times over the decades here. A very intelligent nice man who has used his talents to make an income and a life for himself here in Thailand. A talented writer and film maker who seems to know most of the writers I know doing the Bangkok expat story telling and who is well known in the Bangkok arts scene for a very long time. Good interview. Could do a part two I believe. He has loads more stories to tell and is an interesting interviewee. Thanks Pete. P.S. There's an old hand writer that writes under the name S. Tsow that would make a good interview if his health is still good. I believe he is still alive and living in Bangkok. He is getting on in age but has lots of stories and experiences of life in the earlier Bangkok scene. Used to write for one of the BKK newspapers. I forget which one now. James likely knows him and may be able to make contact.

James is an articulate and lyrical storyteller. Love his dry wit. The imaginary past/present section of the vid made me think of when i visited Chiang Mai for the first time in 2004. The bars around the old town on Moon Muang seemed to be full of so called Vietnam vets. Well I was 15 when the Americans left Saigon in 1975. These guys were to a man younger than me. Was tempted to say if you were in the Vietnam war, I'm an Irishman (no offence Pete), but thought better of it!
@Ulbre2 жыл бұрын
I joined the Australian Air Force as an 18 year old in 1981 and graduated to my first squadron in late 82. There was a 1979 Aussie film about the Vietnam war called The Odd Angry Shot. At my first squadron, there was a line related to the movie that the guys liked to use....."Didn't have this problem in Vietnam"....followed by "15 cents a can"....referring to the price of a can of beer in the film. I was on leave and out with my girlfriend and her parents....the bill arrived and I couldn't help but saying "Didn't hjave this problem in Vietnam, 15 cents a can".......I certainly in no way tried to portray myself as a Vietnam vet, was just trying to be humorous like the guys in my squadron......anyhow, the GF's mother came down on me like all hell claiming I was trying to pretend I was in the Vietnam War......freaked me out....it was never my intention to portray that.....the relationship with that girl was finished because of that........ I hear you though about the folk that tell tales...because there are a lot of them........just makes me cringe a bit because I always remember this time when I didn't really do anything wrong.......

A seemingly intelligent enough person, he buys blag t shirts to sell on (red flag straight away), but not just that a) sets up a limited company, b) sells them on ebay, and c) sells them wholesale, exposing all those other people with fake goods... then has the temerity to say that he was 'on to a good thing'. How does someone hand over approximately $300,000 US to a bar girl to buy a business? I'm not saying it isn't true but it sounds far fetched. It's not like he would be walking around with a load of cash like that, it would have to be transferred to a bank he would need a solicitor.
