Of course they weren't going to be the same w/o a monster singer as Gramm. But-- Hansen and the later members have done one stellar job touring and killing it for many years now (way longer than the 'original' band-who were always a rolling roster,anyway). Not only that- Kelly's album with the band -Can't Slow Down' was a fantastic addition to their catalog. But w/o radio play/industry backing, it was only a marginal seller (and that's a crime!). I love the band with Lou,but I also have huge respect for Mick assembling a strong touring band and motoring on with Hansen & co. T

The band Foreigner has been a prime example of why it is important in the music industry to make sure all of your bases are covered when it comes to copyrights and the fair sharing of royalties from anything you may happen to create. Disagreements between songwriters over these two key aspects is what has torn quite a few great bands apart. Lou gave an interview where he said that Mick and himself had a disagreement over royalties for the song "I've Been Waiting ( For a girl like you )". which I believe turned out to be their biggest hit ever. Lou wrote the lyrics and Mick wrote the music, so it was pretty much a 50/50 collaboration. You would expect the royalties to be a 50/50 split also, but because Lou didn't copyright those lyrics before presenting them to Mick when it came time to split the royalties Mick wanted a 95/5 split. Lou was to say the least offended by this offer and left the band at that time. He didn't realize it until it was too late that because Mick had copyrighted the song before he copyrighted the lyrics that Mick had complete control over that song and could determine how the royalties were split. Lou learned a valuable lesson here in that the music industry is territory where you must know law quite well and have it representing you at all stages of your musical career. Another example of this has to do with the recently deceased Rodriguez. He had a big hit with "Sugarman" back in the seventies but wasn't really well known in the states even though he lived in Detroit. His music was massive in other countries ( In South Africa he had a Platinum album ) and there was even a documentary about him called "Searching For Sugarman" that won awards in Hollywood. He apparently didn't realize that his music was so popular in all these other countries around the world and wasn't receiving any royalties from it. Management of the record company he was with should have been providing him with royalties checks but they didn't do it. Until the documentary came out no one really knew just how much he had been shafted by not only the music industry itself but the record company. and poor management to properly look into these things. Poor management will only lead to a downfall in your fortunes. Because they are not willing to stand up for you against the record company willing to rip you off. The music industry is brutal if you have not done your homework on not only the record company but your own management also.

Right!? Look at Badfinger. Man, what a tragedy fueled by greed and perhaps some ignorance.
@dangroat4438
@dangroat4438 Жыл бұрын
@@dontworrybehappy8080In the case of Badfinger that was basically a case of management ripping them off but also Apple records going belly up. Stan Polley had stolen their royalties and put it in a Swiss bank account under his name but told the band that the money was in escrow to the band's bank account. He lied about that but also didn't inform them of Apple's demise ahead of time which only worsened things for the band. Imagine creating all these hit songs and selling lots of records yet making no money off of this whatsoever, and now you have to find another record label to sign to, knowing that since the previous label just folded, you would probably not be seeing any royalties from them. When Pete Ham committed suicide he wrote a note saying that he would like to take Stan Polley with him, calling him a "Soulless Bastard". Tommy Evans also committed suicide several years later because he was being sued for several million dollars over advances paid which ended up in Polley's pocket also. Since Polley couldn't be tracked down because he had disappeared it all became too much for Tommy also.

Lou didn't leave Foreigner in 1984-85 over the royalty ratio split on "I want to know what love is " . There are concerts on KZbin that are from 1985 confirming he didn't leave. Lou was increasingly dissatisfied with the (adult contemporary)direction Foreigner was taking plus Lou was also being cut out of having any input on the co-songwriting partnership of Jones-Gramm. Lou officially left Foreigner the first time in May of 1990 and returned in April 1992.
@tod3msn
@tod3msn Жыл бұрын
Kelly Hansen seems to be the real problem here. He is giving interviews like he will be inducted into the Hall of Fame with Foreigner. Grabbing the limelight and appeared to be intimidated when Lou Gramm was on stage with Foreigner during the reunion a few years ago. I saw some KZbin clips where Kelly is at times eager to cut Lou off when he was going to talk or maybe seemed anxious with Lou on stage with him. Mick Jones needs to inform Kelly what is going on and tell him he is a well paid "hanger on" which is great in life but to dial down the talk that he is Mr. Foreigner. If Kelly Hansen were lead vocals in 1977 when Foreigner launched they would be a bar band or at best on a nostalgia tour with other 70's acts each summer. As for the songs Lou is talking about, I think Mick Jones cares about his musical legacy and does not want to get into a legal taffy pull with Lou Gramm over some unfinished songs. I predict as legends now in the "Songwriter's Hall of Fame" they will work it out.

I'm not gonna lie if Lou would have ever gone back to Foreigner..I would be buying that album for sure.Kelly was a good singer in Hurricane and yes it was a good concert when I saw Foreigner in 05 of course Bonham was there too...I think Kelly did a ok job but hes been riding Foreigners coattails as well.Grest vid thanx for sharing

He said she said. Both were in the creative writing process for Foreigner. Songs belong to Foreigner. But Lou deserves to get credit and royalties. Should have got Joe Lynn Turner of Rainbow. He sounds like Lou and could write pop rock songs in the same vain as Foreigner. They would have been a real band with new material instead of a cover band now.

Hi, dear Michael! Nice to meet you! Lou was my favorite rock voice over decades... He is a gifted vocalist and a wonderful lyricist, but he has a sensitive soul and his heart is devoted to his deep faith in our Lord… Mick is a leader with the commercial sense of feeling. I dare say that he is a businessman, but not a simple guitar player. It depends only on moral principles! According to the contract Lou had a right to have 25% of the royalty only as a lead singer… but Mick has the other depth of his soul. I don’t judge anyone, but I just show that he could demonstrate more compassion. There is no business like show business, but the main thing is to be a human with feet which shall be staying on the ground. Not everybody can do it after getting a lot of money and enjoying the fame! Objectives are different! I even heard about a lost tape… Lou found it and finished songs, but he has no rights to do something with them without Mick’s permission. “FOREIGNER” is a trade mark and he is not the brand owner! I feel sorry for him! I write small poems and learn to play the electric guitar. I am blessed to know one talented guitar player and a warm-hearted person… After this wonderful meeting my texts turned into lyrics for possible songs. I hope that my treasured friend finds some free time in the future to compose music for them and to record demo versions, which I would like to show to Lou… Dear Lou, don’t be sad! Everyone, who can feel, will stay by your side! I still hope that we meet at the concert one day in order to heal your broken heart with our creativity! I know how you want to sing other songs! Don't let it get you down, my soul mate! Take care! God bless you! Warm wishes from Russia! P. S. He needed to pay for the brain tumor surgery and was forced to sell his rights to that brand...

while i have some respect for mick jones to me, he's never been that great of a guitar player. so, when i hear that lou gramm wants his songs back.....i believe him. mick jones has always seemed a bit sleazy to me and when the replacement singer came in, jones started to show his true colors. let's not forget that gramm suffered from a brain tumor and we really don't know when exactly that itself may have begun to affect him. it's one thing for jones to call himself doing what was best for the band when gramm started showing the effects of that tumor and taking gramm out of the occassion but jones has also proven to be a bit of a schemer when it comes to the material he and gramm wrote together. i've always been team gramm and always will. let's be honest, grams voice is not what it use to be, so why not give him his do as far as the music he wants back. to me, he and the rest of the original band were what made that group great. i think lones owes gramm everything!!!

Sorry, Michael, but I hate it when people hold other people to the PRECISE words they utter! In this day and age.......ESPECIALLY, when INARTFUL speaking, illiteracy, and vacuous thinkers are so prevalent, most people don't know HOW to PROPERLY express themselves nor do they have the intellectual capacity to do so, you can't hold people to what they say; you SHOULD be able to, but you can't! I'm not a grammarian so much as I am someone who tries to improve himself in what ways that I can, and speaking better and using the English language in a more proper way is something ANYONE can do if they simply cared enough to try. In that regard, I hear MANY PEOPLE who can't speak or write properly at even a RUDIMENTARY level. Sorry, but I hear you say things in a way that makes me cringe, too. I don't think you would want anyone to hold you to the EXACTITUDE of your word usage. If someone did, I'm sure you would be the first person to say, "Well, I said THIS, but you know I meant THAT!" People should work on improving their speaking skills because it's not MY responsibility to "know" or figure what one is saying. It's THEIR responsibility to articulate their ideas well so they might be easily understood!

Oh lord I’m famous for chewing up the English language Tim! But in this case, Lou knows what he’s saying IMO. As a songwriter, he knows the difference between the 2 terms I compared. When you think that he doesn’t have those tapes, he was being careful to attach the one term to tie to the other! The result? Claiming ownership to something he no longer has Poseidon of, and thus no proof to support his side of the story! Don’t het me wrong Tim, I’m impressed! And a lifetime fan of Lou’s! @@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLineNo! You're really no worse with the English language than are most people (sorry to have to say it in such a way). You're actually what I would consider to be a pretty good guy. You certainly can take a lot of criticism (from me?) and not react in a dismissive or angry way, and that shows great character! Please don't take anything I say too personally! I'm in a situation where I'm in a foreign country, Chile, mostly by myself with little to do but watch videos. Because I do, I hear so many people talking who REALLY should be learning the language instead of (mis)using it!
