Foreigners Try Taiwanese Blind Massage For The First Time! (they only hire blind people)

Taiwan has these massage parlours everywhere that only hire blind people. The idea is that because they can't see, their sense of touch is increased and so they can feel your muscles and knots you might have better. It also gives blind people a job in the community. Allan and I tried it for first time! We went to see if it's any good, and asked questions about the lives of the people who work there.

I used to get a full body massage once a month when I was working in Toronto, as it was covered by our health plan. But I haven't had one in a while. I do get foot massages whenever I'm in SE Asia.

每個星期都要去按摩，按完會喝一杯水，按摩對健康有益按完很舒服身體肩頸又放鬆，按會很痛表示身體比較不好，剪片完可以做5-10分鐘肩頸伸展運動，每天要喝2000cc的水，記得有空要常常按唷。

I’ve had massages in many countries and Taiwan is pretty much at the top. In even small shops the staff are well-trained and the facilities are clean and comfortable. And it’s affordable. Here in California my massage therapist charges usd$110 for a 60 minute massage, or about 3,500twd!!

I had this in Shenzhen. As they are blind they rely on feeling, so they can find the knots and work them out. I hear Allan about the foot massage .... only I had the only woman working there give me a foot massage. She dug into the my foot with her thumbs and I swear I almost hit the ceiling. All the male masseurs proceeded to laugh. But it did feel like I was walking on a cloud for the next 2 days.

I love the blinded massage in Taiwan. They are sweet and very professional!! I especially love to go to the blind massage place to give them the change to work and they are so nice. 😊 It hurts at first but later it did feel great! Lol.

During the Edo period in Japan, masseuse were often referred to as "按摩" or casually ANMA-san. The trade mostly trained/hired blind-people, so they would have means of economic livelihood.

Never had a blind massage here, have seen them around, there even used to be one in the Zhubei Carrefour. Never tried them though. I agree about the foot massages being painful here. The foot massages I got in China were less painful and 20RMB for an hour.

Taiwan has lots of them! I think labour is generally cheap in Taiwan and these kinds of places are not covered by the system

I think I see the attraction for Taiwanese viewers. They can learn real English in their own Country in real situations a lot more easily. It's like an American learning Taiwanese from a guy living in the US. You can practice phrases and not end up sounding like an idiot.

I like at least an hour, sometimes go for 2 if I'm really hurting. In the LA area it will cost about $60 an hour. Did you give them a tip, or is tipping not part of Taiwanese culture? Given it is a physical job, I will tip half of the cost unless the masseuse does a real lazy job.
