Just one question , and that is , why the hell didn't the family of the dead woman go to her place of residence once in a 30 span, to inquire about her well being ? The sister goes to her grave everyday , but didn't bother to go see about her during her life ? A life that might have been longer had she done so ?

My point too. Crocodile tears after she’s gone but not before?? She turned down invitations to family events. Ok. So you go to her. You check on her. You visit her. But to wait until she’s dead to cry for her?? Skeptical at best.

some of you have no clue about domestic abuse. The first thing the abuser does is distant the spouse from their family and friends for better control. Once they have no support they’re easily manipulated and controlled. Teach your kids that, they might need it one day. Never ever shame the victim

I don't believe people watching this episode actually listen to the details of the condition he was found in and need to go back and watch it again. First clue. He immediately isolated her from her family and for the rest of her life. This is not normal, healthy or sane. 2nd. He was manipulative and controlling as indicated by his abnormal societal behaviors and not once but over years. 3. She was not that embarrassed about having censures when she has lived with them all her life. Everyone in that small hick town that knew her and her family knew this about her especially when the population is under 1OOO. It's sad that know one went to check on her or sent the police to do a welfare check. It's sad that he killed her and everyone believes he's innocent. It's apparent Virginia state of mind wasn't so great either. She totally cuts off her family after getting married with no explanation as to why? And for years? And married to someone who is not mental stable or emotionally healthy? Something's wrong with this picture. I believe she was locked in the house to and was rarely allowed out and not allowed to contact her family. A house with no running water! A filthy house that was never clean and Infested with roaches and ants! Her hair matted to her head? People this is neglect! Not love! I agree with her sister! He killed her. He forced her to write that note days before her death. He kept her from taking her meds she always took. I wished her family would have saved her from him.

@@newhorizonsintuitiveguidance You said it: "It's apparent Virginia state of mind wasn't so great either. She totally cuts off her family after getting married with no explanation as to why?" She chose her fate. There was no evidence that he was holding her against her will. Also, there were many notes about their relationship, not one. If things were so horrible for her she would have escaped or attempted to reach out to her family. She didn't. He might not be a good husband and he's probably not all there mentally, but he didn't kill her.

There is a mental condition that will actually do that which I can verify because some people in my family have it. What it does is allows the living quarters to become that filthy and unkept. Whats more is that this does occur within married couples. My grandfather who rarely spoke with anyone lived in it with my grandmother before his cancer took him. He rarely spoke to any of us, and I dont believe ever left the house. So this can happen if the conditions are right for it.

I see a lot of comments still blaming the husband in this case and just felt like I needed to point something out. People who suffer from medical conditions that lead to loss of control like epilepsy also often have comorbid conditions such as anxiety and depression. Where everyone else is pointing out her condition when she was found as evidence of abuse (underweight, unkempt hair, etc.) I actually see a depressed, anxious woman that wanted nothing more than to live in her bubble with her husband because that was safe and familiar to her. She didn't care that her husband had a reputation for being sue-happy; he was loving and understanding of her and that was all that mattered. It was never mentioned why she stopped taking her medication, but side-effects could be part of it, and once she stopped taking it, her anxiety and depression about her increased seizures likely worsened to the point of making any trip outside impossible. I do believe that the husband suffered from some kind of mental handicap himself, despite them finding him fit to stand trial (perhaps just low IQ), for the simple facts of how he handled the situation. Everyone always found him so odd because he NEVER thought like anyone else. Perhaps that's what attracted his wife to him in the first place. Everything he did made perfect sense in his OWN head and he had no excuses for anything, only honest explanations. His own distrust of most of society is exactly why he didn't encourage her to seek medical treatment for any of her conditions and only sought assistance initially from those he had previously positively interacted with, such as the hospital in Chattanooga which treated his mother. Now for the rest of her family. I don't know how much I swallow that they were so incredibly concerned for her wellbeing. Yes, she was an adult, and yes, that meant they were limited on what they could do in the way of intervene in her married life. However...seeing the state of that property and the conditions the couple lived in, they 100% could have called the county's Code Enforcement with concerns that the property was not fit for human occupancy. Even the smallest of towns will investigate such claims if enough fuss is made. Also, with all the run-ins that the husband had with the sheriff, the police chief, etc... not one of them ever thought to say, "Hey, how's that wife of yours? We haven't seen her out in a while." SOMEONE knew this woman was alive in that house other than her husband. It just kept the town gossip juicy to keep their mouth shut about it. Is it sad that she didn't get the medical help she needed and lost her life entirely too early over it? Absolutely. But her husband didn't do anything malicious to her. This isn't Stockholm Syndrome. This was a case of two hermits who didn't trust the outside world to do anything other than judge them. And when that world tried to do just that, Virginia's own words kept her husband out of jail.

Well said, i think it's terrible so many pple are still blaming the husband in the comments. I think the defence lawyer summed it up nicely. It's obvious the husband has little social skills and is an oddball. The local prejudices decided that this odd person was responsible and no one could change their mindset. Ofc, he wasn't perfect but even imperfect pple have their rights. And honestly, i too feel the family didn't care enough. If they were so worried, they would have made the sheriff come with them and knock on the door. It's a small town. Everyone knows everyone. If i didn't see my sister for years, i would be worried enough to make a house visit with law enforcement by my side. Oh wells. Obviously ESH otherwise they wouldn't be featured in such a terrible and sad story.

Posten had said several years earlier that Alvin had undiagnosed autism. That could be a contributing factor as to why Alvin seemed more out of the ordinary than most people in Ringgold. Of course, just because he had autism that doesn’t make him a bad person at all. People just chalked up his behavior before and after Virginia’s death as him being crazy, including Virginia’s family. Also, it kinda rubs me the wrong way that Trixie calls her sister “this girl”. She’s sitting here talking about how bad Alvin is and how she’s saddened by her sister’s passing. Has she and her family never heard of a welfare check? You can call police and have them check on Virginia for you. They did literally nothing for 30 years. Sadly, Alvin passed away this past July. @@newhorizonsintuitiveguidanceThat’s the thing though. Her family didn’t seem to care about her at all. Trixie said that she sent invitations, and said she even went over to the house but still couldn’t see her sister. Another commenter said that in a different interview, Trixie admitted that she didn’t want to go over and be seen near Alvin’s home. Which explains a lot. If Trixie wanted to make sure Virginia was alright, why didn’t she have police do a welfare check. She didn’t. She didn’t do anything for 30 years. Also, just because someone lives in dilapidated conditions that doesn’t mean they’re bad people. It may be for some but that’s not always the case. Alvin was a hermit who seemed different compared to others, which is why he was dubbed as “Crazy Alvin” by the townsfolk.

I've watched other cases where husbands or wives immediately planned to kill their spouse after marying them and purchasing life inusrance on their name. And when I say immediately, I mean a month up to a year after marriage. And in those cases, the killer spouse either tried to hide the body, bury it, dismember it, or stage the scene or use poison over long periods of time. I think all the evidence against him were answered with facts from credible experts. Admit it or not, it did put doubt on his guilt, and that's all his defense needed to do. And knowing that he was acquitted despite his bad reputation means that the jury also felt that doubt.

You know what’s so damn sad, is that all of this happened because people base life off of facades and what they deem to be “normal”. God forbid you live life in any manner outside that ‘norm’, and there are people from every walk of life who will attempt to make your life a living hell. One of my biggest issues with this story is the sister. I can say without hesitation if anyone I knew, especially my immediate family, if I felt they were being held against their will at any level, I’m going to the the poster child for bat-$hit-crazy! If you had so much as a thought that they were being forced to stay against their own will, why would you only sit and judge?! Hell, you can have welfare checks done by the police. You can have DFCS check via social workers. You could knock on the front door, and ask. I don’t have epilepsy, but I’ve had seizures and I’ve had issues with mental health. I’ve seen this “high and mighty righteousness” that seems to only appear when everything is said and done.

It was later revealed (several years ago) by Posten that Alvin had undiagnosed autism. That could’ve been a contributing factor as to why Alvin acted odd. Though, just because he had autism that doesn’t make him a murderer. Everyone else in Ringgold, with a few exceptions, just thought he was odd and didn’t want to associate with him. Hell, in an American Justice episode on this case had mentioned that there was an incident between Alvin and Vanita (the coroner) back when Vanita worked in a furniture store on the same street as Alvin’s TV repair shop. She said he scared her and many believe that that was a contributing factor as to why she accused him. She and Trixie were just spiteful in believing that if someone is odd, that means they’re a killer and abuser. Alvin was neither of those things.

She seemed to flight into fantasy likely because of the claustrophobia of living in such a small town. She'd often say how she'd date men that were unaware she's trans which I found hard to believe that these men wouldn't have known she's trans or towns folk or her family didn't 'out' her to these guys as being biologically a male. She denied that ever happened, tho. She did try to escape to a larger city, but could never afford to make it on her own so she always moved back home with her family.

The judge said the quiet part out loud. We no longer have the presumption of innocence. We have prove we aren't already guilty. The state just has to come up with a compelling story. It's justice turned on its head.

They loved each other. The outside world didn’t matter to them. She felt safe at home with him and didn’t feel safe away from him or her home. Especially as her body and possibly her mind diminished. If her family were THAT concerned about her and her well being they would have checked up on her BEFORE she died. Save the false concern now. Just another example of “I wish Heaven had visiting hours”. You didn’t visit when she was here and could have received your visits. Be gone. Trifling.

@@lavenderflowers1075 when you’re agoraphobic or mentally incapacitated what you find comforting might not be “normal”. We don’t find staying inside of a house for 30 years normal for us. We don’t find improper hygiene normal. Some people cannot cope with societal norms. Their mind cannot accept it. And if her “family” were so concerned for her they would have checked. They did not. Instead their pseudo concern came after they learned of her poverty stricken death. They all look healthy and well and taken care of. But to cry for her after she is gone after not making serious attempts to check on her prior to her death?? Pathetic.

Hair can get knotted terribly in a very short period of time. Especially wavy or curly hair. To the point the only solution would be to cut it all off.

What was weird to me is, first, the hillbilly sister not wanting to identify her own sister and sending some relative, and then the relative coming out saying 'I'm so glad you didn't go in, it was not a pretty sight'. When I heard that I thought there was some grose stuff in there, maybe blood, of cuts on her body, or somethinf sinister. But no... she comes out of there and says 'Her hair has not been combed in years'... WTF??? That's the FIRST thing you look for when you go in to identify a body? Her hairdo? 🤣

Great cases solved! Social skills is not given to everyone. One is not a bad person only because is ignoring its surroundings. Distrusted about others is not a crime, it comes from past bad experiences. It’s called pragmatism.

If Virginia would rather die next to Alvin than to divorce him & go back to the family home, I'd say it's because her family is toxic. I mean look at the sister, not a shed of tear while talking about her "beloved" little sister.

She always was skinny. In the picture of her dead she doesn't look that much more skinny than she always was. It was proven that she wasn't skin and bones like the sister said. She wasn't neglected either because she had painted toe nails and her hair was done in decorative pins. It probably got messed because she had a seizure.

Only the person who identified her body said that, but the picture shows she looked as if she was heavier than when she married him. No one else mentioned how much she weighed or if she was actually malnourished. If the forensic people don't mention her being malnourished then she probably wasn't.

I feel sorry for that poor woman’s health issues and lack of hygiene. But, if the family knew she had epilepsy why, if they were so worried, why didn’t they get an independent health assessor to visit her. I don’t mean to be rude , but that’s a heck of an odd wedding photograph. She looks like a bag of bones ( some other comment said that) , like there was something wrong with her then. They may have left a very odd and unhygienic life but, in his own way, I think he loved and cared for her.
