As a person who went to be trained as a building maintenance person, I studied all aspects of fixing any problems in a building including electrical. I even worked at a modular home factory as top electrical installer. When I first saw the photograph of the wires going thru the hole, I said aloud to myself, the fire started in the attic. It’s hard to explain to you how I knew that but I’ll be turning 80 in 2023 and 60 years of electrical experience helped.

I remember this case. This was caused by a low current arc from an open junction box in the attic above the closet from a space heater being used on that circuit. They didn't show the junction box on this video but I read about this and there being a junction box somewhere else on the internet. This is why Afci breakers are required now. These types of faults are the leading cause of residential electrical fires and they won't trip an ordinary circuit breaker. Most of the time a low current arc will arc all day long with out tripping a standard breaker. Once it starts to arc it pretty much snowballs and produces carbon and you have a runaway self feeding arcing condition. The more it arcs, the more carbon it produces, the more carbon it produces, the more it will arc until the power is turned off or until a fire starts.
@robertmiller38104 күн бұрын
@ We just had a family lose everything because of an electrical fire. I know the woman and had she had some basic electrical knowledge, the fire wouldn’t have started. It happened on a standard breaker, not because it didn’t work but because it did. And your post is the cause. The breaker tripped and she reset it, it tripped again and she reset it a second time. Instead of stopping and finding out what was causing the short to trip the breaker, the damage was done. The fire started between the 2nd and 3 floors and when it tripped the 2nd time, the fire ignited something nearby. It was a 2 alarm fire involving 4 houses. Most people don’t realize you can’t use a high wattage device like a space heater using standard 110/115 wiring, it will overheat it and cause a fire. They are trying to determine what started my friend’s fire but before she reset the breaker the first time, she should have found out what tripped the breaker to begin with.

This is one of those cases that sticks with me. The ending with Peter Thomas’s last bit a dialogue “Terri Hinson cherishes her freedom and the time she spends with Brittany. Yet Terri thinks of Joshua every day - what he would’ve looked like, what kind of person he’d be, remembering the good times.” I couldn’t stop crying after first watching this episode. The innocence of Joshua, him perishing in the fire. It’s not fair that him, Terri, Brittany, and the family to go through that kind of pain and suffering. The music along with Terri’s remembrances of Joshua and the before and after, I just couldn’t stop crying. Sadly, Terri passed away, and now she’s up with Joshua, having the time that was stolen from them. I pray Brittany is alright today and that her mother and brother are watching over her spiritually. R.I.P Terri Hinson, Joshua, others who knew them that have passed, and Peter Thomas

I do think that they should face more serious consequences for professional misconduct, which it seems they never do, although I don’t think they should serve the full sentences. If that were the case, no one would ever be willing to change their mind in these cases. Perhaps no one would be willing to even take the jobs. It bothers me very much, however, that public defenders & the investigators that work with them are drastically underpaid in comparison with prosecutors. One of my friends, who investigated on behalf of the defense for indigent citizens, had only $4000 to spend on the defense investigation in a capital murder case in Texas. That’s a travesty.

I hope that woman took everyone to court and got big bucks for what happened to her and her family. This was a bullchips case.

I will never understand why there isn’t consequences for those who screwup an investigation or lie? Prosecutors can lie, withhold information, etc and never be held accountable. A crappy investigation could have sent this lady to prison for life. All she gets is an “oh our bad”. This definitely goes for prosecutors. They should have to serve the exact amount of time a person wrongfully accused did. I am all over the place with this comment. The Justice system in America is basically garbage

This poor woman while mourning the death of her baby had to Do research to defend her case. I wouldn't wish this on anyone

Okay, I live in a large city in Virginia. I didn't have internet in my home in 1996, like this woman did! Nobody I know had it in their home in 1996 in my area. Yes, I had email at work, but honestly nobody I know really knew what the internet was at that time. So this woman is not as uneducated and rural as they are portraying here. Still, I'm very glad that she was able to get on the internet and connect with people who could help her. Because honestly the internet was not that large (websites) at that time.

For real....people who didn't live in 1996 are quick to judge an era in which they understand little. I only had internet at school in 1996 and we didn't use it very much because we only had one computer per classroom at that time. It wasn't until 2000 that we finally got internet to our house, which was the case for most people I know. If you didn't live in the city centers, you didn't have internet available right away and once it was finally available at people's homes who had never dealt with it before, they had to teach themselves how to use it. They would be given a short explanation on how to get onto the internet by the installer, and then left to explore it on their own. It doesn't make them stupid that they didn't automatically know what email was and how it worked....it was just a new technology they had to learn. The mere fact that this woman realized she could click on the email icon and type into the box when she had no idea what email even was shows that her logic and problem solving skills are actually quite high....so she's intelligent, not stupid. People also tend to assume that if you have even a slight southern like accent that you are unintelligent and dumb...when it's just intonation picked from living in your area for a lifetime. Being southern myself, I get that same stigma when people hear me speak since my twang is quite strong....but with an IQ of 152, they're entirely wrong about me.

That little girl was mature way beyond her years. The way she spoke was erie. Grownup thoughts and words coming from a childs mouth

Right? I felt bad for thinking this way but when she said "he was so young" there was an almost grin. And it kindof sounded (to me) like she had heard someone say it and repeated it. She is definitely very smart and so mature ❤❤

She'd been through more than most grown ups at the time of this interview. Think about it- she'd nearly died in an accident that killed her baby brother and the government betrayed her and tried to take her mom too.

Listen to this little girl! Is this an adult we're listening to? What's going on here? 😀 My God! I'm SO glad I watched this episode!! I now know to have a fire investigator investigate my fire! Not a arson investigator! Wow! Can you imagine if something were to happen and I didn't watch this episode!? Wow this episode may save one of us one day.
