Question of the day: What do you cut brush and small saplings with? Would you consider a 10" carbide tipped brush blade like this?

I have done ton of brush cutting over 30 odd years on my farms. This setup using the typical center placed handle on a hand held trimmer looks awkward and a little risky not to mention slow. If you have a lot of brush cutting I would recommend looking at an Echo 410u. Those bicycle handles give you tons more control especially if you swing the left handle so that it rests on your hip. Next, give consideration to taking off the blade guard if you get one. Lot faster, less frustrating and, in my opinion, safer. It also gives me much better control when I back cut on saplings and small trees.
@MarkThomasBuilder5 жыл бұрын
It sounds dangerous to take the guard off. I don't recommend it but I see your point about the back cut on saplings.
@andrewkey68585 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree cow horn handle bar gives far better control, thus safety.
@dnsmithnc5 жыл бұрын
@@MarkThomasBuilder It does sound that like it would be dangerous. I do recommend that new users use the blade guard. With that out of the way, there is an ongoing debate on Lawnsite and other similar websites on this issue. With my years of experience using the Echo SRM 400-U (not the 410-U as stated above which is the newer model) I fall squarely on the side of no blade guard. Again, besides being much more effective, I stand by the opinion that it's just safer. The reason why is the frustration and movement necessitated by working around the guard. The most I ever was hurt brush cutting is losing my footing and falling. Again, much more likely if I am working around a blade guard. Being cut by the blade is a danger that I don't even remotely see. Material thrown up by the blade in my face is nothing I experience except occasionally a few wood chips that do no harm at all. What I have experienced (and I don't know that this wouldn't have happened even with the blade guard in place) is that rarely the blade will pick up a chunk of wood I have cut previously and throw it back and hit my chin. This has happened maybe 8 or 10 times with hundreds of hours of use. The most that happened was a maybe a small bruise? One caveat is that I use a brush cutter with bicycle handles. Consequently, I can't say positively that I would shed the blade guard with your setup.

What's great about a brush or table saw blade in grass is that you only need a couple hundred rpm (you can also hold it wide open if you want to waste gas and look a little silly) The blade will easily lay down a nice swath like a scythe and if the blade hits something it is not going to throw it very far or dull every tooth on the blade 3000 times before you can move it away. For anyone who might actually consider sharpening the blade, 20 teeth is better than 80 or is that too obvious?

It's not dangerous, in Japan this is mostly what they use. In fact they believe the nylon line to be more dangerous as it can flick things back into your face, the blade doesn't tend to do that.
