Forests
My favorite story from my grandmother,
Is her lesson about the forest and the garden.
She said that "If I wanted you to plant me a forest,
I would first ask for a garden."
Because that means that no big problem would stop you from trying
And you would see how powerful you are when you just start.
That beginning is half the battle.
And we now stand in a mound, with shovel and trowel in hand.
You have already begun the race toward progress.
Congratulations,
Welcome into this.
You have left beauty in your wake
And I am glad that you are here
Do not doubt for a second the strength that lies ready in your shaking hands.
Hold steady to the fact that there is space for more,
But also time for rest.
For celebration under shade trees
To look back at the seeds we have planted,
The gardens that began sprouting and led us here.
That there is music that still plays in the background of those sleepless nights,
Of quiet mornings still deciding on next steps.
And afternoons that felt slow at first but brought new possibilities
New things for us to attempt, expand and grow through
Wild dancers of late nights,
Early mornings
And everything in between.
There is no promise of speed in any of this, but there is one of worth,
That we will see what we build here grow into something more.
Turn first roots into networks of strength.
Canopies of safety for next generations.
See, I thank you,
For planting seeds of ideas into the ground,
Saying I will do this,
I can do this.
That you,
You have seen what grows out of it,
Hope and change,
In all your wonderful ways,
These beautiful creations,
Stunning gardens becoming forests
Not scared of big problems,
Because you've already begun.
