I don't even lock them and leave a ledger in them. I'm always surprised when I go to one and find a new log in one for someone that took refuge in it. in this day and age they even leave a email address. it warms my heart when someone leaves a message that they stayed in one on a bad day just to make it throw the day. made many new friends this way. They've even shared their harvest with me because they hug out for a few hours in one of my natural blinds. Heck I've even recruited some of them to help make new ones

so on the roof to help waterproofing, make a mixture of the dirt (make mud) and mix in any loose gravel you can find and since you have lichens, mix those in as well. Make it about 6" thick and cover with a thin coating of the downed branches. The mud/gravel acts like a cement, the lichens grow and stabilize, the smaller branches reduce erosion. Nice job on the cabin.

That's a cool cabin. Good job with a few modern tools to do some old timey work! One small suggestion if you live in a really cold area, a longer stove pipe will take advantage of heat that is otherwise lost. If you run it up to the ceiling and across to the other side it will put out much more heat!
@DexterHaven2 жыл бұрын
Good point. I worked in an ancient courthouse in rural Nevada. They heated the big courtroom with a single wood stove and an iron tube 25 feet long across the room, radiating heat as it went out.
@xxxYYZxxx2 жыл бұрын
Also, capping the end of the pipe with a "T" section, or just a curved piece of sheet metal across the opening, keeps wind from blowing back down the pipe, as it just blows out the other side of the "T".

@@xxxYYZxxx Put another Tee on the inside right off the top of the stove and not that 90 degree bend, Close off the top and you should have a much more stable platform to place and cooking stuff and not that rocky round tube where it looked like that pot just might tip over.

I liked the suggestions of running the pipe across the room. But keep it low to the floor to maximize the heat exchange since heat rises, and then run the vertical pipe up and along the inner wall and have it exit prior to the ceiling/roof - on the side wall to a standard vertical pipe with a vented cover to keep the rain and snow out, plus birds and insects. My Wife had a 10' W x 12' L x 14' H Barn style shed by Tuff Shed built for me to work on my projects and "writings" and I needed to design a heating unit to keep it warm during the winter and have utilized both the propane tank in 5 and 10 gal. as well as a 30 gal "oil' drum as the burners/stoves with great success for each one since the total area is only about 1,600 cubic feet since it has a Gambrel style roof. I use 12" x 24" cast paver with aluminum foil between the floor and the walls to keep the heat transference to a minimum and also on the outside surface of the pavers to reflect the heat into 6he interior of the shop. Finally, I just found a discarded bbq/smoker and intend to tie it in to the heating system I now have since I can use it to cook with too. Hope this helps someone with a solution for a heating unit for their shop or maybe even thier home in an emergency and the videos are here on You-Tube if you need them.

Does it not make you rethink life a little when your little doggo is so happy being in a log cabin with you, they don't need anything else, just you. Makes you wonder why we all need so many things and so much technology to make us all happy.
@pollyjetix20275 ай бұрын
Well, we're human, so we need mental stimulation and challenges. Of course, for some, that means they need nothing more than what was available 150 years ago, and are happy with no books, and no contact with the "outside world." But I confess, I would become a weird person and slightly unbalanced if I were that cut off from information and other people. I don't have to have a TV or radio... but look at us: communicating with each other, and gathering information via technology. Our lives would be quite barren without it. I've lived for 5 months in a cabin without electricity or plumbing, and was very happy. I'd do it again in a flash. But I still had my guitar, books, my vehicle, and my sister next door... and my cell phone.

This was amazing! If there are awards for KZbin videos this should win one. Awesome project and your stellar video editing keeps it interesting--plus Rocko with her adorable personality is the icing on the cake. I sincerely love everything about this: the way you chinked the walls as you built, very efficient, making the bed part of the structure was smart (agree they would have made a great bench outside--next time) and the stove was also great, but that door hinge, WOW! Great Job start to finish--THANK YOU for taking us along on your incredible journey.

Cool project! I love this type of construction. A tip for next time, make all notches downward facing. Upward facing notches catch the rain, like pouring into a bowl, promoting rot and shortening the life of the joint. Downward facing notches are like turning the bowl upside down, allowing the rain to shed and run off the curved surface.

Well that makes sense, I never would have thought of that. You might be a genius 😁 Thanks and God bless you.

Lincoln Logs were fun. Now I see the practical lessons they also taught us. The editing on this is excellent- it shows just enough to give an idea how to do it, without getting too long, and adds a few cute scenes with the dog. Really well-paced and put together. If Foresty ever wants to settle down, he can move into film editing as a profession. Or just building cabins. Or fixing cars, or....

Wow Foresty!! Your little log cabin is awesome. That stove is so cool! One of the girls on KZbin put a tarp on the roof before she put on logs. She then was able to sleep in it when it was raining. I see cabin upgrades in your future. Lots of hugs & love to you and Rocko!!!❤️❤️❤️

You've made a really good wood burner from a gas canister. The dog 🐶 is so cute. As soon as the mattress is laid out, it hops onto the bed and gets comfortable. Excellent first try at building a cabin, well done.

You know what ... I can honestly say that I found that video to be one of the most engrossing ones that you ever made!!! I have to admit, I wasn't sure where you were going with the door hinges until the last moment -- nice!!! As for the insects, with the weather as wet as it was, it's really not all that surprising.
@jonathangauthier35492 жыл бұрын
I think your first cabin build went super well. In the future, I would line the ceiling with a tarp or other impermeable material to prevent such drips, as well as a THICK layer of boughs, needles, sticks, dirt or other debris atop the roof for better insulation and waterproofing. As for the bugs, there are many natural options for deterring them, such as: lavender, citronella, yarrow and mint that you can also use as a bed liner and flooring. You can also cake your walls in mud made from the materials around you (especially if there's a freshwater source around where you can find clay. This would make an extra barrier for insects the go through, as well as act as an insulator in the colder months, and as a primitive grout/plaster to adhere bark shingles or other natural materials. Of course, these are only suggestions of things that have helped me in the past, and you're welcome to modify or ignore whatever you'd like. Your cabin is highly impressive, and I see potential for a full-on fortress in the future, as you continue add to, and to improve upon, your existing project. Best of luck bud, and keep that little fur ball safe. P.S.: It's actually a relief to hear you speak in this video.

De-barking the logs on the inside would help with the bugs. I've seen inexpensive draw-knifes on the web $25 to $40 and they're good tool for a woodsman to have on hand. Great Video, handsome dog!!

this is by far one one of my fave cabin vids..my brothers and I did a cabin like this in Northeast Vermont..way back in 1975… we bought 10 acres of land on a beautiful small stream ..trout in the water, we only had gas chain saws.. So wish we had what you had in the way of electric tools..but also wish we had your natural and innate talent of constructing a most beautiful and functional living area… oh, yeah..we had two crazy pups like yours!

Great build man! When you slab trees with your saw use just the bottom of the very tip of the saw. It allows for more control. To make the roof water tight I'd slab a bunch of trees about an inch thick and layer them like shingles that run the entire length of the cabin.

that was so much fun to watch. I like how you created pegs to stabilize the logs and assemble the door. A lot of work but really effective. And your hinge system for the door was very creative. Cool little stove too and I like the stone surround as a safety measure and a massive heat sink. Best part was watching Rock claim your pillow as soon as you laid it down. She was tuckered out and ready for a nice cozy sleep curled up next to you. What a good life.
