An interracial couple falls victim to a hate crime.
FOREVER is used with permission from Joyce Sherrí. Learn more at joycesherri.com.
Monica and Beau are a couple who are clearly in love with one another. They hang on one another's words, they spend time together in the forests and beaches near their Virginia homes and their attraction for one another is clear. But they are also of different races, living in 1940s Virginia, making their romance forbidden and even dangerous.
Their relationship is discovered, and their love for one another is tested when bigotry rears its head, putting their relationship -- and especially Monica -- in danger.
Lush, atmospheric and visually sumptuous, filmmaker Joyce Sherri uses every element in the cinematic toolbox to craft a jewelbox of a romance, exploring an interracial relationship set in 1940s Virginia.
The storytelling can be languid, taking time to build the chemistry and sexual tension between the film's central couple. The sensual, tender camerawork capture the give and take between the the lead actors, Tashiana Washington and Jordan M. Cox, placing them within the tableax of a beautiful natural landscape full of water, sunlight and trees.
But their Eden-like romance can't escape from the real world tensions and politics, and when their relationship is discovered, it means danger to them as a couple.
FOREVER contains elements of fantasy, but these are very much rooted in the emotional life of the characters, reflecting their unspoken hopes, dreams and fears. Fantasy is often an underused genre when it comes to exploring race and history in cinema, but Sherri uses it here to powerful effect, as an acknowledgment of both the bond between Monica and Beau but also as a commentary on the harsh reality they find themselves living in.

@@protyushakanjilal7388 I see a bit more nuance in the actions of the white girl. I believe she was trying to appear friendly in the eyes of the fellow - and it is not uncommon for young girls to do one another's hair. So I believe she was portraying herself as making a friendly overture to Monica. But gradually her true attitude was revealed. Her first correction could have been ok - it was open to interpretation - did I really hear what I thought I heard? You give her the benefit of the doubt. Her second correction was condescending with no room for misinterpretation. But her attitude went from distasteful to unforgivable when she spotted the stockings.

After watching this a second time I finally caught the connection between her dream and what really happened. “You stood there like a statue, and I was waiting for you to move” The fact that he failed to act before it really hit the fan was not lost on the writers nor probably the character, Beau. People don’t know how they’ll act in a situation until it happens. Up to this point they’ve probably never been caught and he allowed his fear and uncertainty to paralyze him. Probably prompting his decision to enter the water with her.

@@twistedbliss58 But him doing so darn sure could have saved her life! We sadly saw how the situation escalated, and how in the end when she did defend herself, she was murdered. It's all about CONTEXT. During these times, African Americans could not defend themselves without the fear of serious consequences/repercussions. Beau could have used his White and male privilege to help de-escalate the situation, but he did not. And I believe in the end, I regretted his decision. In the end, no one HAS to defend anybody. But, people do it all the time because they care about the person they are defending, and usually the person that needs defending is vulnerable in some sort of way. Only wish Beau realized the extent of his feelings for Monica sooner.

Well done the acting, script, camera, and music are wonderful. Yet my husband and I are an interracial couple of 49 incredible years, we have seen it all. We have a loyal and brave life together. The few films about couples like us almost always have tragic endings. We feel that thousands of happy interracial couple stories are not as interesting to film makers and producers. This is very sad, and I feel it keeps the subject always in an immature, unrealized state. Because there really are those who have blessed and joyful lives together. And weather the storms of racism.

I really don't know how I feel about this. He sat there and left her to fend for herself with his racist friend. Then let her walk away on her own, unguarded. Then after all the cards fell, he finally decided that he loved her enough to save her. This is not okay behavior from any man towards any woman he claims he cares about...interracial or not. This was not a miracle ending...just a portrayal of women always being forgiving of inappropriate behavior by men who claim that they care, but are dismissive until there are no other options. Whereas the author may have thought that this was simply about race...it's deeper message seems to be about the dynamic men and women societally. She should have gotten up and walked away.

She watched this with me up to the part where the other woman comes in, and she got up and said baby they are going to kill that poor lil gal. When I said granny how do you know? It wasn't legal, in the South until the Loving Supreme Court Case in 1967, and that was a black woman and a white man. Any race-mixing prior to that between a black man and a white woman usually ended with him being murdered or having to sneak up to the North for fear of it.

It is a sad situation that racism still exist in our country the good old USA. Just when I thought it would get better we elected a President who is constantly dividing us. I am an American a descendant of -Mexican Heritage. I am also the grandfather of 2 beautiful grandchildren who happen to be African-American, also the grandfather to several grandchildren who are part-Chinese. I felt this deeply 😖 .. I really REALLY liked this guy who was of the Caucasian decent in 11th grade & after knowing him for a while, he asked me out on a date. He was all excited, blushing at the cheeks and shy - cute it was. I said "yes". The next day? We had P.E. class together and he came up to me literally crying tears and hugged me before he said, "I'm so sorry - but my grandparents won't allow me to be with you because you're African American. As much as I would like to fight against it - they'll disown me for ever dating a black woman." .... The inner child in me was SUPER broken. With all of the love I had inside me - I just wanted to genuinely love him. I had NO idea how bad racism was until THAT happened.. Which was 5 years ago. I'm really tired of things like this 😓 ... I wish we could all be just like pure and loving little kids in adults bodies - not even seeing color to divide ANYthing.
