I have a partially torn ACL and meniscus I’m working around. I do 10 minutes a day walking backwards, and 2 sets of 20 reps of deep body weight squats 3 times a week with my heels on a 2x4 so I can get the knees over the toes a bit. I had to work up to this. My knee feels great 98% of the time, but at this stage, I am leery of any jumping or running, because in the not too distant past, before I got to where I am now, a slight jog crossing the street, made my knee feel awful for weeks.

@richardtibbetts574. I think that I have something to that effect currently going on as well. I'm almost 54 and I had orthoscopic knee surgery(On my right knee), when I was 23, in 1993. Currently, I can only do bodyweight box squats, and I'm probably heavily favoring and leaning on my better leg, which is my left leg, when I do them. I even get occassional pain in my left knee though. I was doing running sprints on a consistent basis for quite a few months, in recent times, but for the last one months time span, I just haven't been able to run sprints without fairly serious repercussions to immediately do they're thing(Such as woefully lingering prolonged knee discomfort). Therefore, lately, I'm just mostly focusing on Cycling sessions(Sprinting up smallish hills with my mountain bike). I'm also a longtime martial arts practitioner/enthusiast, so that's another activity that I've been recently having to have a modified approach with.

Great video and I agree on all these points. There is a guy on here that has videos on strengthening the lower back after having a herniated disc. I can't remember the name of his channel but the reality is a neurosurgeon that called out Ronnie Coleman for doing squats after twelve back surgeries clearly stated "Doing squats with a ruptured or herniated disc is a big no no" and common sense would tell you he's right as your putting massive load and strain on your entire lumbar region. Even though this guys content means well in trying to help people recover from a herniated disc I truly believe what he is saying and promoting is counterintuitive and very dangerous to the uneducated person that doesn't know any better.

Heavy squats ruined my back and knee permanently even with perfect form that many strength coach and PT assisted with. Enough is enough.
@robcubed9557
@robcubed9557 7 ай бұрын
Did you actually use “perfect form”? I strained one of my adductor muscles kickboxing. This affected my squat form and as a result a few weeks later I noticed that one of my knees started feeling strain while I was squatting. I deloaded the weight and squatted slow and paused at the bottom and that when I noticed my previous adductor strain has caused asymmetry in my hips resulting in one of my knees shifting forward. It was very subtle but when I corrected my form, my knee problem disappeared. My point is that very subtle changes in form can cause joint malalignment and injuries and you may not even realize your form is off.

@@robcubed9557 hello, thanks for sharing your tip and i’m so happy you don’t have knee pain while squatting. I’ve had many strength coach, PT and even physio’s assist with my squat, adding tweaks to my form over the years to perfect it for me. I’ve invested a lot of time and money getting a strong barbell squat while trying to stay as healthy as possible and it did go very well for more than a decade. I squatted very heavy pain free up until I hit 30’s. It came as a surprise to me, when I noticed horrific pain popping up on my back and a year later my knee. An MRI revealed 2 bulging disc, moderate degenerative disc disease and left knee chrondopathy with severely busted ACL. I have no family history of premature musculoskeletal skeletal diseases or a higher than average predisposition to it. I’m not sedentary, eat well, have decent amount of muscle mass and am regularly physically active. So doctors can only attribute my malady to continuous excessive external force ie heavy squats. Some people can keep lifting heavy till ripe old age without negative consequences but I’m not one of them. My body is different, so I just have to find what works for it.

I’ve been dealing with patellar tendonopathy for about 5+ years. To date the primary remedy I’ve found is Spanish squat isometrics and heavy slow isotonics. Has anyone overcome a similar issue with different methods? I’ve tried knees over toes guy stuff but had zero progress and in fact all it did was cause flare ups if I tried to progress anything beyond very low level exercises. I was getting okay progression when using the leg press but once it got to about the 90 pound mark my back started suffering so im done with the leg press.

@robertdecker146 7 ай бұрын
Leg curls, aka-Hamstring Curls are actually quite good. I would prefer to do them the old school way(Laying down on my stomach). The modernized seated variation of Leg Curls just feels unnatural imo. Leg extensions I've done in the past. Haven't done them in years though. They're fine as a finisher, or basically as a warm up, after doing leg curls. Imo, just a few sets, using very light weight with a quad-squeeze self-flex is plenty enough volume and resistance for that particular exercise. Leg Curls are pretty safe to go fairly heavy on though. Several sets is ideal volume with leg curls as well.

People need to stop thinking and working out like bodybuilders or powerlifters. Imagine going to work but your legs are destroyed from squats.. Who needs that? Use squats to improve your athleticism/strentgh and thats it. One set with some weight can do wonders. In my training i do them mostly over the winter period and then i switch to some sprints/jumps

No disrespect to body builders but ask them to shovel half a ton of sand or chippings with a shovel. People with large muscles need a lot of oxygen to contract the muscles over time and they gas out. Functional and fit muscle that Lee talks about is much better for you. Body weight squats build muscle with enough volume to failure. Good video.

@wintermute8853 Your new age philosophy is shared with good intentions - but has no saving power because it is false and wil pass away. The gospel of Jesus's death and ressurection brings life and will save all who believe in Him. Be washed by his blood, pray for him to reveal himself to you in sincerity - he will meet you. Jesus is not a gland - he is fully God and fully man - so that he could rescue us from the wages of sin - which is death

@NeoArmstrongJetArmstrongCannon 7 ай бұрын
Knees break under load greater than they can manage. If you have no practice and suddenly jump from a 10 story building, yes, your knees will break (alongside your entire body). Slowly jumping from low heights and progressing will give your lnees time to adapt and strengthen. So yes, impact and jump do break knees - weak knees. But to strong knees, it does the exact opposite.

I’m gonna have to disagree with this video. Squats after a fundamental movement and should be PART of any training routine for a physically intact human. I’m not saying that squats are the only exercise. Also, I’ve found plenty of benefits to making my squats deep (without curving my lumbar spine) and pausing at the bottom rather than simply slapping on more weight.

Oh? stop doing things that aren't part of daily life but also defining 'daily life'. On the whole it seems a good strategy to do less extreme stuff. I don't think of exercise as adaptation as some. of course some of it does seem to be baked in via practice, but with age I've come to see exercises as tolerance, or lack thereof. I don't tolerate jumping off walls just the same as I don't tolerate squats with much more than body weight. So, I really like some of the safer non impact moves on here, plus there's some good sensible conversation, and that will be nice moving forward.

Your videos are like improvisational jazz -- it's easy to appreciate the creativity, expertise, and years of experience to develop such an amazing skill set but when you boil it down, it's all over the place, has no direction, and can be confusing. I think you can change that if you think of your videos as giving a speech. I love your philosophy. I love your methods. But you confuse me with your conversational style and I have a hard time grasping exactly what I should do. I believe you could be a more effective communicator and KZbinr if you knew more about the different types of speeches. In this case, you are giving two types of speeches in one. First off, you want to give a speech to inform, specifically "How to do Functionally Healthy Squats." Then you want to give a speech to convince, specifically "Why Functionally Healthy Squats are Better Than Weighted Squats." Start by introducing what you are talking about. You don't have to be petty and say how dumb big gym is - we know, that's why we seek your advice. In a healthy way, let us know and show your excitement, as you always do, for your better method. And then let us know that you will give us a step by step method of how to start doing this excellent method at any skill level after you have shown us why this method is so much better. You see, first we all have to understand this different method, and then, once you've explained it, you can demonstrate why it's better. Finish off by showing us how to take the proper action and some methods on how to do these exercises no matter what skill level we are. And of course recommend your classes and services. Instead of your impromptu speech style that is too conversational, try this simple method above. If you can group your thoughts together in a logical way, I think you will make it easier for more people to know exactly what to do and you will be even more successful. Just like you've improved and changed in fitness, I believe you can improve in the area of making KZbin videos (i.e. giving compelling speeches) that both inform and convince. I wish I knew the name of the great book I learned public speaking from in college 33 years ago. But Dale Carnegie is a great place to start. And here is a link with 20 suggestions: www.eventible.com/learning/best-public-speaking-books/
