Liked the vid man 🎸 My dad has a Ghost Drive from Stew Mac. He also spent 6 hours building it, making sure it was absolutely extact. It sounds incredible through his Mark 3 Mesa Boogie combo. I have and use a Tone Bakery Crème de La Crème, which is a dual channel Klon clone with a Green channel and Red Channel. Green does clean boost and Red side is where its at for the true Klon Tone. Also with internal dip switch to use as hard or soft clipping diode. I use it with my 1973 Fender Bassman Ten Silverface housed in a custom 1x12 combo enclosure with a Eminence Swamp Thang speaker 🤘 Sounds killer everytime 🔥 Don't believe the hype over some overpriced overdrive pedal. 😂 Theres some awesome clones around nowadays. 🤷

I had the crème brûlée at one point from tone bakery, but it just didn’t do it for me. Maybe yours was better. I’m sure the girls drive sounds wonderful in your Mark three ! Enjoy it it’s a great pedal.

Great video here, great subject. I hope more players can see it. I'm tired of the whole Klon scam. I tried a Klon around 1993 when a friend ordered one to his shop in L.A. He ordered it as a gag. He thought it was silly that these pedals were going for (at the time) around $220. So he did an experiment. He ordered it to see if anyone would buy it. He even dropped the price to half. No one was interested. I tried out the pedal on several amps in his shop. I thought it was a good pedal, but not worth the price, no way. If I wanted a Klon style pedal I would simply go for one of the pedals you demo in this vid, maybe the Wampler Tumnus.

Great informative video Tony and true! I have a $29 Moskey Silver Horse I bought on Amazon that matches up very close with the Centaur tones I've heard on many reviews! Many affordable versions than the ridiculous $5,000 price tag.

The Moskey gets harsh and raspy on the high end of the drive sounds. Me no like!

Cool video Tony. I’ve got the Tumnus but would gladly play the lower priced pedals. They all sounded great to me.

There is no lack of choice when searching for a Klon clone…

I'm no pedal connoisseur, but I like the JHS Notaklon that I bought for $99. Nux also makes a Klon like pedal named the Horseman for $69 that some say is a good alternative. I have the Ghost Drive, but I haven't built it yet.

You should go ahead and build a ghost drive. Let me know how it compares to the JHS. I’d be curious to know.

Josh's kid sold me on buying a Not-a-Klon. #3457, and it's still in the box unassembled. Maybe one day I'll buy an Amp. 🤪😜

"What Klon? We ain't got no Klon.... We don't need no Klon.... I don't have to show you any stinkin' Klon !" - Tony Ramon from the film Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1927)

@@mbrownie22 In 1948 Leo Fender was experimenting on building the perfect " electric guitar" which later in 1950 was mass-produced and sold going by the name "Telecaster" ("Tele") (originally named the Broadcaster for two-pickup models and Esquire for the single-pickup). There was no need to use a KLON with this Telecaster. It sounded perfect.

Why does everyone use a Klon as a clean boost? If you want a clean boost use an EP Booster or Keeley Katana. Heck, even the NUX Sculpture and Lacerate will do just fine (or the Verdugo version). Crank that gain, pal (3 o'clock or more) and use it as a distortion pedal! You're doing yourself a disservice....but cool video nonetheless. The Tumnus Deluxe is on my radar 😊

I love my EP booster but it does color the sound. The idea is to boost without coloration. That is what the first sound sample way trying to show. Thanks for watching…

C'mon, Tony! Take one for the team and steal a real Klon for the comparison.

The 2 white ones sounded better. They both had more harmonics and definition. The others I found to be muddy and dare I say unusable. The best I have heard and the closest I feel to the original is the Harby Centauri. The builder claims to use the correct vintage parts. The price is not dead cheap but at $170.00 USD it is not crazy. It looks OK, nothing special just a standard Hammond B enclosure The thing about the Klon's design is with the gain set below 10 o'clock the pedal is a dead clean slightly colored boost that creates a very, very distinct glassy sound. As you turn it up it brings on a dirt OD sound and gradually the blend is gone and it is all dirt OD. The OD part is easy to clone but the clean glassy boost gets its sound from rare diodes. Guys with the original often use it as an always on but only using the boost part. In short the clean sound. Most of the guys who buy them often pretty much have the gain over 12 o'clock. In this case buy the cheapest, better yet get a Blues Breaker as it can sound great between 12 to 2 o'clock.

Hey Paul, the StewMac Ghost drive does what you are describing here that’s why I like it so much. Thanks for the feedback on the Harby, I will have to have a look.
