Let me put a nice comment to balance the grumps.😅 great video and as a current Lexus owner I love the interior. Also the price compared to alotttt of luxury phevs for maxed out equipment can’t be beat.

Lexus is quite bold asking for this kind of price for this RX PHEV, it should make the appearance different to differentiate. If I have to spend the money to buy this Lexus I want to make sure people know by just looking at the car😂

@tony… This 100%. But you can’t even rely on differentiating clues of the exterior because people are ignorant dufu$ when it comes to cars. This is why I always buy the most expensive truck on the market and then leave the window sticker on the passenger side window inside and HIGHLIGHT the final price with bright highlighter and drive only in the left lane when multiple lanes are available so people can see that I am in an expensive vehicle.

First question. Yes. We should have done more PHEVs before the all electric. What a mistake it was going full electric.
@jeffs6090
@jeffs6090 7 ай бұрын
Yes! Smaller phev vehicles should be around 40 electric only miles, and midsize to larger phevs should be 60-100 miles by now. If we had a wide range of that for the past 5 years, everyone would see that's what they really want and need.
@Cloud30000
@Cloud30000 7 ай бұрын
Problem was the technology; back then, hybrid batteries only held a tiny amount and full EV's with massive batteries still had less then 100 miles of range. A PHEV back then would only get 10 miles on electric if you were lucky, while taking a heavy hit to MPG over the full hybrid due to the extra weight of a bigger motor and heavier battery. Even full hybrids back then were a very hard sell due to the major hit the engine and power took to fit in the motor and battery. Remember that EV's with 200 mile+ ranges are actually a recent development, making PHEV's with 30+ miles of range possible. Who would buy a PHEV if it only got 10 miles of electric range and the combined power was only half the power of the gas version, even if it gained 15% better mpg? Ultimately, it was too early for a useful EV and it would have been too early for a useful PHEV too, but you have to start somewhere, and it was the advancements made by the early adopters dumping money into EV's that allow us to finally start getting good PHEV's. Today's EV's are still better if you never make long trips (or have a second vehicle for long trips) and can get away with just driving at home, while PHEV's are better for the utility of having the extra miles and easy refueling (especially if the majority of your trips mean you put less then 35 miles on it before you plug it back in to charge overnight). There are still more things that can go wrong with a PHEV and more maintenance, so it can't be considered better in every scenario and use case.
@TrevorVaubel
@TrevorVaubel 7 ай бұрын
@@Cloud30000 yeah, I'm talking about what has happened in the last 3-5 years. We skipped investment in PHEVs and went straight to full EVs, limiting electrification in the process. If we made PHEVs the transition could have been faster and our use of fossil fuels dramatically reduced.
@normanli7085
@normanli7085 7 ай бұрын
@@jeffs6090 actually because of the weight, it should be the other way around. Smaller vehicles should get 60-100 miles of EV range, midsize vehicles should get around 40 miles, and Full size should push for over 20 miles. There's a reason that if the Lincoln aviator PHEV were to be in an F150, it could likely be around the same milage
@jeffs6090
@jeffs6090 7 ай бұрын
@normanli7085 perhaps. But the smaller vehicles can't fit the larger batteries needed for the longer range. That's why my comment of size vs range fits.

I want more PHEV reviewers to talk about driving dynamics in EV only mode. One of the biggest drawbacks to me of most PHEVs is being a slow turd when they're on EV mode which is hopefully what you're going to be doing most miles on. My favorite thing about BEVs is the power curve... I thought the RAV4 Prime actually did an OK job of making the EV only mode pretty reasonable.

PHEV's can be a good option for certain buyers. How many is Toyota planning to make? Hope this isn't another Unicorn. I believe they are only selling about 20k per year of the Rav4 Prime. They seem to be more interested in blowing smoke than actually producing their PHEVs.
@tazeat

They won't seem to make enough of the RAV4s as last I looked they were pretty supply limited and any dealers that had them on lots had dealer markups plus they're kinda expensive to begin with and won't qualify for any tax credits as they're all made in Japan. If they wanted to push more RAV4 Primes they certainly could.

Plug in hybrids are the worse of both worlds- you get a short range in only electric mode so you’re constantly plugging in, you don’t get the speed of a full EV, you still have all the maintenance of a gas car, and EV only mode is very inefficient because you’re hauling around a gas engine and transmission. Non-plugin hybrids are not bad if you road trip often, then you don’t have to worry about plugging in or go just full EV and have yourself a very fun vehicle.

I've been driving PHEV for 8 years. It's got its downsides over BEV. Really at this point the only reason you should get one is if you take LOTS of road trips, like once per week, because the reduced hassle over a good BEV is marginal if you're a "once per summer" roadtripper. BEV does everything else better. And remember PHEV still needs oil changes, still breaks down like an ICE car, etc.

@craigcampbell1843
@craigcampbell1843 7 ай бұрын
This is a free market. Consumers will never dictate the automotive market. That’s wishful thinking. That’s wanting to have things both ways. In free market capitalism consumers don’t hold all the power. The government doesn’t even hold all the power. Corporations do. Auto manufacturers will never make cars just because they know you will like them. They’re not a public service. They’re not the fire department. They’re a business. They don’t care about you. They only care about profits. They only make cars they know they will be able to sell that will make them the most money. That has always been the case. The government doesn’t control gas prices either. They may place certain regulations on the oil industry for public health and safety but ultimately only oil companies can decide what to charge you for their product. That’s free market capitalism. It’s always the same people who say private businesses should be able to do whatever they want that complain or blame the president when they do.

@craig…. The government doesn’t control gas prices? Ok then I guess it’s the difference in geography why Montana has almost $2/gallon lower price compared to California. But then how come the Hawaii gas price is actually lower then California’s price? Everything is literally shipped in and still less? Then maybe it has something to do with government and Hawaii is almost as communist as it gets with laws, regulations and taxes but seemingly California still wins in that game. I agree with some of your points but the government is totally distorting the car market and gas prices and it does shoving the EV “revolution” down on our throats. And they are doing it so well that most people doesn’t even realize it, seemingly one of the unaware ones is you. And for that last point just look up what’s on the books for 2035 in CA, WA and a bunch of other states. Full EV heaven, baby you want it or not.
