The Falcata is the traditional weapon of ancient "Lusitânia"(Portugal). The romans fear it and respected it so much that made it the weapon of choice for the gladiators at the Colosseum at Rome. Thank you for the video!

The falcata was used only by Iberians and rarely by Celtiberians. The Lusitanians were celts and they used La Tène type. No falcata has been found in Portugal en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falcata

This sword inspired terror in the hearts of the Roman legionairs, when the Roman legions attacked what is now modern-day Spain and my country Portugal they faced warriors armed with small shields and this superb weapon in close quarters combat and it was an horrofiyng experience for them because it can cut heads and limbs clean off in one blow or pierce their helmet's and shields.
@joek600
@joek600 5 жыл бұрын
The romans were already very familiar with it, because basically its a greek Kopis.
@nunomiguelbernardinopicao2238
@nunomiguelbernardinopicao2238 5 жыл бұрын
@@joek600 you may probably be right about this sword but the Greek version the kopis is smaller and lighter than the falcata and was used primarily by the cavalry of Alexander the great, the Greek infantry used primarily the Lance and in last resource the kopis you mentioned, greetings from Portugal.
@joek600
@joek600 5 жыл бұрын
@@nunomiguelbernardinopicao2238 Falcata and Kopis is basically the same weapon. Ok lets take it from the beginning. The original design probably comes from Asia Minor. Kopis belongs to a category of single edged blades reffered as Machaira. We can say that because Xenophon suggests that a ''machaira'' is more suitable that a xiphos for a cavalry man, and most specificaly a ''kopis''. By the way Kopis means ''chopper''. There are speciments of kopis (or more grammaticaly correctly, kopides) and depictions from around 500 BC and the use becomes very frequent during the peloponessian wars and the hellenistic era. We are talking about a time frame where Rome was not even a regional power. The romans before their military reforms, had adopted completely the Greek arms through the Etruscans and the contacts with Magna Grecia. So its quite safe to say that the Greeks introduced kopis into the roman armament and they called it Falcata because of its curved shape. The Iberians most probably got the design through the Greek colonies of the spanish peninsula and west mediterranea. They probably liked the design and became very popular and they spread it around in their turn. Now there might have been some regional design differences, but the weapon is practically too similar to leave room for speculations of simultaneous development out of luck.

Really weird question here, would you ever consider, if you had the knowledge and the machinery, milling a crossguard on a CNC mill? I'm asking because I'm an engineering student and a former art student... Thus the madness of thinking of buying a bare blade, and then milling the pommel and crossguard (would do heat treatment of course...) but I am not sure if it is a good idea...
@freerkwieringa275
@freerkwieringa275 6 жыл бұрын
Lua Grimm I think it can work. The big knife and sword companys do it that way. I have cnc know how but prefer the handcrafted way. It gives more soul to the piece. Perfection is a bit lifeless.

Freerk Wieringa true, that is why I was planning to finish it up by grinder and all... have zero skill for smithing... we had to smith a chisel in my heating treatment class last year... man that was an awful thing... sad the teacher never gave it to us after evaluating it... we did it on our last class of the term. Probably gonna do ring guard gonna wield them up... you have an amazing workshop btw

Christ, that is quite the metal band saw, and the surface grinder mod, wow. The workshop this dude has access to is to die for. So moulded the fit of the guard with heat & vice? Very cool. I'd like to see close up of where fullers meet guard. Was it soldered?
@astrazenica7783
@astrazenica7783 6 жыл бұрын
sman7290 oh I see. I did notice the rivets. I'm interested to see the fitment where guard and blade meet along the fullers. Rivets only secure surely, can't produce friction fit along a non-straight surface? I'm no blacksmith, engineer, knife maker. If it wasn't formed to blade cross section, it risks moisture & rust build up under the guard no?

Freerk Wieringa How the hell do you tell if a sword is a Falcata or a Kopis? For me, those two swords are so similar that I can almost NEVER tell them apart. The only way I'll be able to tell if one of them is a Falcata is if it has a horse's head carved into the pommel.
