some people believe a katana can only be called a katana when it is made the traditional japanese way. whatever we think about that, it still is a masterpiece.
@Boberto3853 жыл бұрын
@@ulrichkalber9039 they arent wrong, this is a replica katana, not a katana. yes its part of the katana family, but not true katana. most people will dislike because they thought they were going to watch someone make an authentic katana, not a replica. the title is misleading.
@ulrichkalber90393 жыл бұрын
@@Boberto385 I do not think the title is missleading, that it will glow gives it away, that it will be made from other material than tamahagane gives it away as well. Anybody mildly interested in katanas will imediately know that this is a replica in the making, even a fantasy object. The Question is just weather it should be called a katana, I think you could call it that as there is no danger in mistaking it for the real deal. other people might differ.

@lakshen473 жыл бұрын
@@drive2160 they do lots of stuff, but nothing pushes on the tip, the curve comes naturally when it is quenched.
@ABCDEFR3 жыл бұрын
@@drive2160 You've got the right idea, the specifics are a bit jumbled though. Historically, folding steel was done (both within and outside Japan) to remove impurities and homogenize the carbon content of steel produced by primitive smelting techniques. Sanmai, on the other hand, is a traditional Japanese technique whereby a core of high carbon steel is folded into a jacket of low carbon steel (like a hotdog in a bun) to yield a hard cutting edge and soft spine. Although likely a result of resource scarcity in ancient Japan, allowing relatively rare blade steel to be stretched further, it has persisted into the modern era as an effective method to harness the desirable qualities of dissimilar materials - such as stainless steel knives with a high carbon steel core. The curve does indeed result from the quench, more specifically from the technique employed to achieve differential hardening of the blade. Traditionally, the spine of the blade was covered in insulative clay prior to heat treatment, which allowed it to cool more slowly compared to the exposed cutting edge. When quenched, the blade actually first curves towards the cutting edge as that portion of the blade rapidly cools and contracts, before ultimately curving the opposite direction toward the spine as it continues to cool at a slower rate, contracting further. This technique is also responsible for creating the "hamon line" found on historical Japanese blades.
