This weeks hook of the week starts with a short piece of 2" tube and some 1/4" X 3/4" flat bar. By unfolding the tube we can make a forged hook with an interesting back plate.

You can keep thinking you are not a master blacksmith, to many of us and myself, you have proven time and time again to be a master at your craft! Embrace it!

Master is a title given by others not yourself. Even in england a board choses there masters not the Smith. As we in America do not have a board your viewers and other smithes have given you this title. We have given this as a symble of you dedication to the craft and teaching others. So thank you Master Smith John.

I don't know enough about blacksmithing for opinion to matter too much but I was told in 1986 (and many times since) that I am a master goldsmith. As a master in one metal working craft, it's obvious to me that John is a master. No question about it.

Savage11 SMW to us peons he is a master, to himself he is always continually renewing his craft and become better just like any other craftsman. Hence this series. But I still agree with you. Swing on!!!

It's amazing that 2 odd bits of steel with fairly simple forging can come together and create a hook that looks quite elegant. I should probably say 2 odd bits of steel and an experienced blacksmith....... the experience is definitely a key to this process! 👍👍👍👍👍

Love your hook of the week. I've started basically doing the same thing, a different hook or two for a new tool rack every weekend or so. Last tool rack I tried to make all the hooks pretty much the same, this one has every one different just for the fun of it.

Love these videos! Please keep hook of the week going. It's very inspirational especially for me because around my forge I have many 5 gallon pails of old, small, unique pieces of metal. It's great to see that you can make something beautiful out of something that others would think is useless. Great work, beautiful hooks, well done videos!

Since I found your channel three month's ago, I've greatly enjoyed watching your skills and creativity when making hooks from your scrap bucket. You usually end with a comment about how the piece could be modified and further refined. How about showing us something special? Take one of your hooks and bring on the bling!

Man some of these twists and hooks and what not I've seen on this channel would make an awesome, historically accurate iron gate. also very expensive... Some of my customers in Miami have gates in their houses that cost like 100k and craziness like that to import and install.

It is quite enthralling and fascinating to see the coersion of metal into the shape you want it to take. Equally so the journey it takes to get to that point. Happy times seeing you work and do your thing. Thank you Mr. Switzer.

I wish I had a shop myself, I keep finding random bits of metal in the road that could be made into - something! Recently picked up what I'm pretty sure is the end of a leaf spring of a car, with part of the bar that connects the springs. From the looks of things it just sheared off whatever it was attached to (if it's not what I think it is), but it really seems like it could be made into something... If I had a shop.

When you dished the piece in the swage, it reminded me of the old shoe spoons we used to see all the time. It's not broad enough and too thick of course. Also, you were talking about making sure the rivets are flush on the back side. Could you have flushed them up some by flipping the ball peened hammer around to the flat face and working it down some or would that have had a negative effect on the piece?
