Brother, don’t change a thing on how you do these videos! Your voiceover narration and clear concise explanation on what and why you are doing is excellent! You are constantly trying new things without stating “this is the only way to do it, anything else is garbage “. You are very good at what you are doing and constantly improving still, and free and generous with your knowledge. I appreciate ya! More words than needed to just say... good job.

Hey man, a good tip I just learned myself is, when you start forging a blade from some bar stock with 90 degree corners, take those corners off with your grinder just by a bit. That will vastly reduce the chance of fish mouthing/cold shutting. Cheers ~ The Norse Forge

Ya I've made a few knifes that have had issues. Nothing is ever 100% perfect. Just do your very best. That's the best way we learn. By using our hands. The knives that are messed up. Make great gifts to family or friends. Most people don't even see what we see. I love the fact, you given credit to the guys you learned their techniques from by watching there video's. Few tips, get a cheap set of thin wet stones to sand with, instead of sand paper on the steel its faster. Pick up some 3M elastic sandpaper for your scale handles. If that handles feel great in your hand and doesn't want to twist around or close your eyes and your can feel your scale handles are in the right direction that's perfect. Nice shop, Enjoy making knives. Thanks for sharing your video's.

The flat platen is a great idea. You can avoid the grab by running the belt in reverse. You can also avoid messing up your filing jig by adding two offset screws that you butt up against the edge of the flat platen on either side of the belt. This also allows you to sneak up on the final line by slowly changing the position of the screws.

WOW! JUST WOW!! What a beautiful knife. That is exactly the knife I have had pictured in my brain for the past 34 years since I watched the knife making series on PBS in 1989. I don't have the equipment or the skills to make anything like that, but as a retired dentist, I really appreciate your attention to detail and your aesthetic design ability. Your video voice over is very similar to Cam from Blacktail Studio videos. You both make great videos, with lots of build details and explanations. I would sure be interested in knowing if you sell these knives, or if you build to order. Thanks for this video. I learned a lot!

@@RedBeardOps I couldn't tell exactly what that handpiece is at 11:18. Looks like an electric motor driving the handpiece through an umbilical. I was surprised to see you using a Dremel in this video. I use an electric dental handpiece with the motor in the handpiece. I find it has less pullback and less weight than an umbilical driven handpiece. My handpieces in my office were air driven. Very fast (450,000 rpm) but not real torquey. You made a beard comment at the beginning of this video. I shaved off my 6 year old Santa Claus-ish beard four nights ago. I forgot how much a short beard itches!!

Dude, you did a great job on that knife. Hidden tang knives are far more difficult than one would realize! A few things I noticed: First, yes I actually DO imagine Nick Wheeler standing behind me as I hand sand. So when I think I'm done, I keep going trying to get out every scratch and make it perfect. Next, not too sure about the plunge of the end mills. I just use a drill bit of same size, drill, then start milling. I tried the same Kyle Royer Dremel deal on my last one and it worked ok (will work better with more practice and steadier hands). Third, still jealous of your surface grinder! Guards are a pain in the butt! However, I just can't seem to stop trying to use them on every freaking knife and trying to make them better. It is definitely an art. Love the Royer top platen that you made. I made one a few months ago, but could never get it to run right on my grinder. However, in looking at yours, I think I will start over and make it like yours and give it another chance. Overall, again, I think you did an awesome job. Unless one of your customers complained, i wouldn't think too much about the critiques of the internet haters. Chances are, unless they are some of the men you mentioned in this video, their opinions mean diddly! Would absolutely love to come out to Texas and spend a weekend learning from you and trading techniques and tips. Thanks for another great video brother! r/ Wayne @deep_sea_forge

Watched and re-watched today and will re-watch again. So many good tips and such. I had seen the Royer method of getting plunge lines squared up, but to be honest, I've been a bit afraid to give it a shot for fear of messing up a knife. Really great content and a beautiful outcome. Thoroughly enjoy your work and the tips/tricks/narration that goes along with it. I've said before and will say again, I learn something new each time I watch one of your vids.

So you make a pretty nice video for a guy with a beard (or even one without). Agree on the ricasso length; during the build i was thinking it was way too wide. In the end though, that's a really nice looking knife.

I agree with your thought on the length of the ricasso. It should be just long enough to comfortably transition from the blade and choil to the bolster. Also, I’d say you might want to do a bit more finish polishing on the bolster, so the polishing marks left from the finish sanding all go in a more uniform direction. In spite of your criticisms, it is a fine piece of craftsmanship. Not overly decorous, but useful and comfortable looking. Also, I for one, prefer a handle that’s a little broader across the back and a little thinner near the bottom where the fingers wrap around. I have remade handle on many of my knives over the years, and while this is unusual, several of my friends ask me or copy my changes for the greater working comfort and control this give the user. Of course, it also means it is more fitted to an individual user, so perhaps, less marketable.... looking forward to your next project.

Nice job, I just finished my first forged hidden tang knife too, also with a Purple Heart handle. (mine is a chef’s knife though). I found that I really got the purple to pop by heating the handle with a heat gun. Not the best for the epoxy I know but it really makes it pop.

Vermiculite? Haven't seen this before. On Amazon they have some for gardening and some for fire places. What type do you use? Thanks for the great video. I love the tips!

That is correct sir. I found it in the gardening section of Home Depot. Works pretty good for holding the heat! You could also use play sand.

That first cut you made with your hatchet can also be achieved quite easily with the edge of your anvil face. Place your hot piece of steel over the edge at a 45 degree angle right where you want your cut and hammer directly into the corner of the steel. Keep hammering until a black heat, quench the crease and then it should work harden until in separates. Bending back and forth once or twice will separate it.
