Ya I've made a few knifes that have had issues. Nothing is ever 100% perfect. Just do your very best. That's the best way we learn. By using our hands. The knives that are messed up. Make great gifts to family or friends. Most people don't even see what we see. I love the fact, you given credit to the guys you learned their techniques from by watching there video's. Few tips, get a cheap set of thin wet stones to sand with, instead of sand paper on the steel its faster. Pick up some 3M elastic sandpaper for your scale handles. If that handles feel great in your hand and doesn't want to twist around or close your eyes and your can feel your scale handles are in the right direction that's perfect. Nice shop, Enjoy making knives. Thanks for sharing your video's.

@@RedBeardOps I couldn't tell exactly what that handpiece is at 11:18. Looks like an electric motor driving the handpiece through an umbilical. I was surprised to see you using a Dremel in this video. I use an electric dental handpiece with the motor in the handpiece. I find it has less pullback and less weight than an umbilical driven handpiece. My handpieces in my office were air driven. Very fast (450,000 rpm) but not real torquey. The flat platen is a great idea. You can avoid the grab by running the belt in reverse. You can also avoid messing up your filing jig by adding two offset screws that you butt up against the edge of the flat platen on either side of the belt. This also allows you to sneak up on the final line by slowly changing the position of the screws.

@waynewalker3154 жыл бұрын
Dude, you did a great job on that knife. Hidden tang knives are far more difficult than one would realize! A few things I noticed: First, yes I actually DO imagine Nick Wheeler standing behind me as I hand sand. So when I think I'm done, I keep going trying to get out every scratch and make it perfect. Next, not too sure about the plunge of the end mills. I just use a drill bit of same size, drill, then start milling. I tried the same Kyle Royer Dremel deal on my last one and it worked ok (will work better with more practice and steadier hands). Third, still jealous of your surface grinder! Guards are a pain in the butt! However, I just can't seem to stop trying to use them on every freaking knife and trying to make them better. It is definitely an art. Love the Royer top platen that you made. I made one a few months ago, but could never get it to run right on my grinder. However, in looking at yours, I think I will start over and make it like yours and give it another chance. Overall, again, I think you did an awesome job. Unless one of your customers complained, i wouldn't think too much about the critiques of the internet haters. Chances are, unless they are some of the men you mentioned in this video, their opinions mean diddly! Would absolutely love to come out to Texas and spend a weekend learning from you and trading techniques and tips. Thanks for another great video brother! r/ Wayne @deep_sea_forge

Hey Wayne, thanks for your comment. You made a ton of good points there! The guarded knives are such a challenge... but I really enjoyed the build. Lots of new things to learn for sure and lots of techniques to prefect! This won't be my last one for sure! Hope all is well man. Keep on grinding. Cheers!

That is a very nice little knife sir! You should be very proud of this and I would be equally pleased if I can ever make a knife half as good as this one. Love the channel and keep grinding 👍

I don't think the ricasso looks bad. Different, yeah, but not bad. The thickness of the knife makes it look like it would be comfortable to hold. Since this is a hunter and not an EDC, does it need to be sleek?

Good points Scott! I normally like a thinner "faster" look, but it is comfortable to hold! Guess I'll just need to test it out!

A great looking blade, I'd go with a different color for the spacer if using similar handle, all in all a beautiful knife, good build to watch and very informative.
