Loved that, moving corner to corner on the hardy hole. Learned another skill that I might have never learned otherwise, thanks John, you're a pleasure to learn from.

A ball peen around that size is my favourite hammer for finishing most of my smaller work.

You should make a T-shirt that says: "SQUARE OCTAGON ROUND (it's a blacksmith thing) -Black Bear Forge" 😂🤣
@BlackBearForge3 жыл бұрын
I have seen several shirts with that on it from other sources.

first time here, thanks for sharing! What is the vermiculite do?
@BlackBearForge5 жыл бұрын
It insulates and allows the material to cool very slowly, which relieves stress.

Have a coil spring off a railroad engine, it's 2 1/4" thick stock, what's the formula for cutting a piece at a specific weight?
@BlackBearForge3 жыл бұрын
There are weight table available for weight per inch for a given size.

Just a curious question. I have watch Tim at Big Dog Forge use his power hammer to punch a oval eye in a hammer. It seems like a better way to make the eye in the hammer. Why not use a power hammer to punch a eye, in the steel? It would be less work for your.
@BlackBearForge6 жыл бұрын
For a hammer this size the odds of messing it up under a power hammer go way up. However one of the main reasons I avoid the use of a power hammer in most of my videos is just to show that you don't need one and that just about any project you want to tackle can be done by hand.
@bbrown12696 жыл бұрын
I still think using any equipment that is available is still all by hand. Because it was not manufactured by a company in some foundry. Everyone knows blacksmith work by hand, for the most part. We also know that power hammers, and torches are part of your trade.
@BlackBearForge6 жыл бұрын
While i agree with what you're saying. Power hammers are not something most new smiths have available, so i want to show how to do most projects at the anvil without sending the message that you must have an expensive hammer or press to do the job.

Awesome video, John! I may have missed it in the video but were those your Butcher Dies you were using with the Smithin Magician? Thanks!
@BlackBearForge6 жыл бұрын
I did several videos on the guillotine tools and I am pretty sure one of them discusses those dies. Might be worth starting here kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5DHdZ-MhN6JgZI
@GONE2VT8026 жыл бұрын
Yeah...I've seen those videos. Thanks! Just wanted to confirm that you were using the butcher dies to create the shoulder. Thanks again!
@BlackBearForge6 жыл бұрын
In that case, yes they are my regular butcher dies.
@GONE2VT8026 жыл бұрын
Thanks John! Much appreciated. Definitely adding this one to my list of projects. BTW...I ordered the Smithin Magician from Blacksmith Supply a few weeks ago. It is a tank compared to my other guillotine tool and I love it. Now, I just need to purchase the complete set of dies that goes with it. Thanks again for all the great video content.

I have a question Can i forge brass
@squattingturtle79766 жыл бұрын
the random guy. Overall, yes. Low temp but it's a fine line between moving and cracking.
@BlackBearForge6 жыл бұрын
I think it may be possible. I know you can forge certain types of bronze. But they have a very low working range and are very easy to ruin.
