Great video as always, Walter! Your channel is definitely on the top of the list of channels I regularly consult for those handy tips and time-savers in the forge. Axes are pesky little critters, I’m happy yours came out with a minimum of cussing and fussing.

Just some basic questions because I have never heat treated any thing before... Does it matter what kind of oil is used for forging? Could I use vegetable oil , olive oil or motor oil or any type of oil on hand in anyone's shop, basement, or house? Or does it have to ge a specific type in order for the forging to take place? When heating the edge of a knife or axe, how will we know how hot it is if we don't have a way to test the temperature?

I love watching how people from different professional backgrounds do the same craft. So many moments when you explain that most people do that, but I’m choosing to do this. Very interesting. I’m about to haft an axe, so I’m looking forward to watching you do it. I’ve watched green woodworkers, arborists, hedge layers, and homesteaders. All have slightly different approaches at different points. In the next video, when you do things differently, can you give a few more words of explanation?

This gave me a new appreciation and understanding for why Gransfors Bruks charges so much for a quality axe. There sure is a lot of time that goes into these.
@vemkanmanlitapa5 жыл бұрын
Nathan Dunn gränsfors axes are actually drop forged with specific dies for every shape of the axe. An axe smith at gränsfors makes an axe in a couple of minutes. Great axes though!

How about tips for welding on a handle. Mine would have broken off already
@garretttanner97885 жыл бұрын
Preheat your pieces before welding. If your handles break off then you aren't getting enough penetration on your welds. Preheating will help fix that.
@thereallevel275 жыл бұрын
@@garretttanner9788 it's because I'm new. The weld holds but I do so much bending it eventually breaks. Wrist control I guess
@garretttanner97885 жыл бұрын
@@thereallevel27 probably more a matter of hammer control and anvil height. You want the piece to set flat on the anvil face when you strike it. That will prevent the piece from moving around as much and bending the handle.

Try JB Weld.

@josephhollingworth53425 жыл бұрын
@@smokysantana possibly, I have noticed a resurgence of hand made crafts with that above group. Either way you put it, Walter deserves more subs. His videos are way more informative and put together then some KZbin content that just shows the craft without the explanation.
@garretttanner97885 жыл бұрын
That's the dumbest reply ever. I know a lot of left leaning individuals who are into smithing and/or other crafts. He doesn't have that many followers because he doesn't put much of any effort into advertising himself, his videos come out sporadically which causes the KZbin algorithms to bury him and he is a very dry individual. I enjoy his videos because he shows and explains things from a technical standpoint but many people are more interested in being entertained than taught.

The first (and only) time I tried this, I chickened out and predrilled the haft hole to 1/2", and then drove the mandrel through the hole. Seemed to work OK, but not a forging project, strictly speaking.

I drill two 1/4" holes before punching the eyes on my hammers. Smiths have been doing so for a very long time. Taking steps to ensure a better product is always a good idea and never something to be looked down on for.
