FORGOTTEN 1969 Chevelle Will it RUN AND DRIVE 500 MILES Home?

Күн бұрын

This is the first half of a 1,600-mile trip which includes two classics which together were parked for 44 years, a flight, sleepless nights, and plenty of wrenching! This 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle was very well taken care of. It has a 307 small block chevy, original to the car, backed by a 2 speed Powerglide transmission. At one point, restoration was started. It received a lot of bodywork and beautiful blue metallic paint. The car was parked in 2003 after it's inspection ran out, so it's been sitting for 17 years. Do you think it will start, and drive 500 miles to the new owner?

My dad was an engineer for General Motors for 42 years. He was born in Northport, Michigan, and when he worked on his cars, said “bat-tree”, “a tickle”, and frequently said “I’ll be dipped”. Thanks for making this 51 yr old daughter of a Detroit auto engineer smile at the memories of her dad. ❤️💞

I'm assuming you're like most of us and just taught yourself as you went along. I dont own a classic American, but I love American cars like this one. It was good of you to help out the new owner getting it started etc. there’s no one better than you for that job! I loved that Dodge Challenger ‘vanishing paint’ car! Just a dream that’ll never happen for me, but I’m glad it happens for others when you fix up these amazing cars. Great stuff, well done Derek! My dad emigrated to New Jersey in the mid 1970s & died there a few years back. He loved these huge old big engined cars. One time, something seventeen feet long had been serviced at his local garage, who called him up: “Doctor Yeadon, your aircraft carrier is ready”. Dad said he heard gales of good-natured laughter from the workshop.

Just had to watch this one again, along with the Rocky vid, I had a '69 Malibu as my 1st car at 16 years old. Pretty much the same as this one, 307 engine and if I remember right (probably not), a 3 speed trans (PRND21 or I was dreaming). Worked on this car a lot with my brother and my dad, along with my brother's '72 Malibu, cherished those moments for sure! Of course I had my air cleaner cover turned upside down to hear the carb intake sounding off the "chawwww" when getting on it. Mine was not as pretty, but it was fun. Thanks so much for doing what you do, the memories give me such a warm gut feeling (nope, maybe it is the cold snacks and wobble pops, made the wrenching times funner). Love your content and family involvement, you guys are genuine!

@@toomanyhobbies2011 The Buick he did was a land yacht! Other than the "Malibu" badging and package goodies, you're looking at one of THE most desirable muscle cars of ALL TIME (maybe #1, actually - except if you're a Mopar man screaming 426 HEMI rules! - which may be true). If the new owner is a collector, he may leave it as is - a "grandma yacht". If not - grab those vice grips and a 454 5-speed, we're going for a ride.

My favorite part is when he says words he makes up for the proper terminology, and then opens the "power barn" and rattles off the engines complete with specs and years and what transmission it's mated to and maybe even gear ratios or type of trans if you're particularly lucky that say. I'm starting to talk like him in the comments I come up with.

Hey Derek, I just wanted to write this comment on this video as I believe this one is your best to date. It had everything from your usual banter and faux par, but there were elements in this episope that made it just that - an episode; like an episode of your favorite sitcome or soap. There was even a section where you let him drive - if anyone missed it you can see the empathy you carry for these projects and thier owners, a rare trait in this ever digital social media driven world. Stories are precious and should be recorded and cherished. This one wouldn't have been told if it wasn't for the car.

I am HOOKED on this channel. That's a bad thing when a feller's got stuffage to do. In truth this is the best of the "will it drive?" channels and videos I've seen so far; you are to be congratulated. You do a terrific job - for a big ol' Sasquatch. Loved your assistant and how you work with him on the big '68 Buick boat recovery too. On this one: I was surprised at the lack of A/C. The big-blocks - mostly the 396 Springsteen sings so well about - didn't get them but the small block Malibu badged models usually did.

A trick I learned from a master mechanic from the good old days: If your engine is running rough on and off place your hand over the carburetor and choke the engine out while simultaneously giving it all the onions. Just before the engine is about to die let her breath while still giving her the juice. It will pull any residue and junk from the jets and such.

I used to be a warranty return tech for a mower company, used to do that with the Briggs and Scrap iron L head engines... Try the pull start, most wouldn't pull as they were just thrown in a crate front side down so the oil got past the rings. remove the plug and filter, Check for a spark, fresh fuel, prime it, pull it, choke it, run it until it stops smoking from the oil in the cylinder.
