The cons of your 260 mostly lie in the fact you have an L26 with the original emissions equipment, which heavily restricts the performance of the motor (also clutters up the engine bay). The 3-speed auto and the added weight of being a 2+2 doesn't add any performance spice either. Basically, the Z has a lot performance potential, you're just bogged down by 70s regulations and economy. As the owner of a 260z coupe myself, I can tell you that the 260z is the rarest of the S30 Zs (in the USA at least). But all rarity means is that it is the black sheep of the family, and often needs a mix of 240 and 280 parts as it is the one year in-between. So keep that in mind. I do love Zs so I'm biased in saying keep it all original. If you want something to build up, look at this car as a way of gaining funds to do so with another find. Z prices are beginning to climb, and as undesirable as 2+2s used to be, people are beginning to see how nice these cars are. So storing it away could be an investment for when Z hype gets more ludicrous than its getting now. Those are my 2 cents anyway. You've done fantastic work reviving her so far!

Don't forget the fact the 260z also split some design elements mid year can make it a crazy challenge finding parts. They early year models have the thin 240 style bumpers. Those are freaking impossible to find.

That car is such a good survivor it would be a crime in my opinion to swap engines or really modify it in any way, there are plenty of other 260s that would be much better candidates for modding, arn't many left that are that original and clean. Enjoy it, then sell it and buy something else!

The Date in Z series was a poor man's E-Type, only thing was, the Zs were as reliable as your mother on a Friday night when you needed dosh for bevy & the girls (unlike an E-Type!) Fantastically strong engines and can be pumped to amazing figures, to lump a V8 in it would make it 'go faster' but in a straight line only, all the handling ballances would be lost at a stroke. Through a big cam in her, ported head and a trio of 40 dcoe Webbers on her and watch it thrash your muscle cars.

Did you just make that up or what?! These old L motors are super reliable, why do you think so many are still in use? Still used to race, autocross and rally today! A truly radical piece of automotive engineering that had been put in Nissan/Datsun cars and trucks from the late 60’s into the 80’s. Where do you think Nissan/Datsun got their reputation for reliability??

Look at the transmission. As it hasnt been used for years you will find a full fluid change, readjustment of the bands and regular driving will clean and reseat the clutchpacks. Look closely at the kickdown system. I cannot remember if it was actuated via cable, vacuum or solenoid. And the fan clutch is locked, thus needs replacement.

I had a 240Z where cam for the fuel pump had loosened to the point where it would idle but had no power. The fuel pump cam (mechanical fuel pump) is bolted to the front end of the camshaft, and if the bolt loosens the fuel pressure will be too low to run properly.

If you think adding a junkyard LS would make this an enjoyable project/challenge, more enjoyable than the cash in your pocket - there’s your answer. Don’t forget that all restomods come out nicer on the the other side by starting with the best base you can find. I figure all those people who want us to save something the way it was, should quit complaining, show their commitment and go save something. Having driven one of these, the fan noise is normal for one of these. It's just because of large blades, and plenty of them. I forget if they were hydrostatic clutch units or direct drive. If you must change the engine to something else, drop a Nissan RB30 in it. In Australia, they were a 3 litre, and one version had a turbo version. With a manual gearbox behind it in the Skyline, they were VERY fast. The Skyline had a "base" model called the Pintara, a 4 cylinder version. The manual transmissions are identical except for gear ratios. The gearboxes were also used in commercial Datsuns and Nissans. A friend had this setup in a VL Holden Commodore, with the Pintara's lower ratios. It was naturally aspirated, with only a chip and exhaust. No major mods, and when the traction gets down properly, it could pull a mid-12 quarter mile

Get yourself a FSM (Factory Service Manual) These can be found/downloaded if you ask the right people in the various forums. FSMs are OP when fixing Datsuns. I got one for my 1982 280ZX and was like, "Oh hey, I recognize this diagram from the Haynes Manual I have!" LOL, the manuals you get at parts stores are made from the FSMs, but have no where near the info. In short, with the FSM, you could walk up to a "model kit" Z car, and take a pile of factory parts and build the car complete. They're that good. Seriously, invest a few mins and few bucks as needed and pick one up. P.S. -if you think working on this gem is rough, check out the wiring diagrams for the 1982 280ZX fuel injected Datsun XD Those will give you nightmares :D Good luck, and enjoy that beauty! Z car owners are some of the most helpful in the car 'fandom' and will bend over backwards to help new members learn about their cars.

Hey, you would be crazy to modify this car. You would decrease the value of it. Fix it up as an original and sell it. If the car cannot run after you jump start it with a dead battery, then it is either your voltage regulator or alternator. Most likely because of its age, it is a voltage regulator. Secondly, if when you put a load(in drive) on the motor that would make me believe it is a few things. Vaccume advance is not working, carb(s) or maybe throttle kickdown. Best regards

Definitely need to go through the carbs completely. Mains are partially clogged, which is why it runs out of fuel when you get above 3 grand. As long as it's been sitting, it's a wonder they pass any fuel at all.😜 Oh and like others have mentioned, the alternator or regulator (or both) are bad. It would *definitely* be to your advantage to keep the 2.6 stock if you want to turn it over. The body looks straight as an arrow from what I can see, and that's amazing for a 45 year old car! A little TLC goes a long way on old Datsuns, so give her some lovin' and make a nice daily driver! Even though it's an automatic, the 2.6L is pretty froggy once you get it up on the pipe. ..and of course, the fan noise is normal. It's when you *can't* hear the fan, that you can start worrying! If I got a hold of this thing, it would be a keeper!😁👍👍

@friguy4444
@friguy4444 6 жыл бұрын
The revving issue could be related to the transmission. If the transmission is signaling the engine that its changing gear or is in a different gear etc it may be messing up the throttle response. Ignition is possibly linked to transmission too. Check and find out what modules make the transmission communicate to the engine and you may find a vacuum situation that isn't working right (It may run on vacuum to signal change gears or just a module is dead). But The only big swap I would even consider for this baby (If it were up to me) would be a auto to manual swap/ Then keep the auto in case someone wants the car with as many matching numbers as possible from factory you have it for them when or if you want to sell it. You could get some news wheels and wider tires to make her look sweet but keep the originals as they are your ticket to matching numbers sale. Keep on wrenching bro. Looking forward to seeing what happens. Good Job!!

I had a ‘72 240Z, I used to have to lean those carbs out to pass smog. Ran like junk. After the smog check I’d go home and reset them. Got good at doing it by ear.

No V8!!! My father owned the 240 with three carburetors. Emission requirements caused Datsun to increase the size of the engine to offer comparable performance to the 240. I remember the fan noise as a kid so that sounded normal to me, in fact, it sounds awesome! Bolt a five speed transmission into that puppy and try not to laugh like a hyena when you’re pushing it hard. The fastest I’ve ever been in a car was in my fathers Z... it was rock solid and way into the 120’s before I ran out of road.... Those cars are real collectors dreams. And they scream.... if it’s running right that is... do not mod that car! If I didn’t live in Maine, I’d buy it right now! Fix it and keep it!

Btw, the dashpot in the carbs acts as a _damper_, not a "dampener." A dampener would be something that makes things slightly wet. Like an ex of mine. :-D

Solenoid kick down failure brother. That's why it jumps out of gear. Change that and service the transmission too. Could be a blockage in the galleries too in gearbox. Keep it original. Don't put a v8 in it. Let someone like a collector restore it. Or if you do change it. Check out mighty car mods 240Z they got from japan. And done a RB26 (GTR MOTOR) conversion

A good friend told me to check the brushes in an alternator, the brushes are the usual culprit.
@Wildstar40
@Wildstar40 6 жыл бұрын
You know if your alternator is not working and you are just running on battery the ignition system will use more electrical power as the rpm's rise. Eventually the battery will die so to check is the alternator is working you start the engine and disconnect one of the battery terminals, it does not matter which one, and if the engine dies the alternator is toast, if it keeps running the alternator is good. Also remember you can have 12 volts running on a battery and one may think it is still good but if the amps are too low you won't get good power through the system and it will tax the alternator to death as the charging system is a balance between battery and alternator. I hope this helps.

If this were mine, I would ditch the auto gearbox and replace it with an original but rebuilt Datsun 5 speed manual, then put in a mild camshaft, replace the twin SU carbies with Triple Webbers or Delorto, and also fit a set of tuned extractors and take the rest of the exhaust system up to 2½inch diameter. Also fit Electronic ignition if not already fitted. Tune it for 98 octane fuel, this then should sound nice and run very well. I have done the same with the same vintage Holden 6 cylinder engines (that's an Aussie GM make) and got very good results.

As much as a manual swap (and ditching the emissions equipment) would make it so much better but by far it’s best left in its stock form. That being said it’s your car and modify it to your own desires!

I don't think the running issue is carb-related as it revs to cleanly when it isn't under load. I think it's an ignition issue, possibly with the electronic conversion as the spark seems to be breaking down with the engine under load...

gosportjamie: The way it lopes and low vacuum means it needs a valve job.....very common on the 4Pot 510s back then to. That engine should be able to idle at 500 rpm quite smoothly with normal wear-ring and valves sealing on the seats correctly.
@Mercmad

Add to that, it's been sitting for nearly two decades and brake boosters WILL leak after sitting for so long, he said the brakes went out,whether he lost pedal or not he didn't say. As for cutting out , I myself suspect a bad ignition. The carbs are so simple that if the car runs, they are ok. there's only two main parts, the butter fly and the dashpot piston that move. In cases like that i use the black dyno. I hook a timing light up, tape it to the wipers,go for a drive and see what it does at various speeds. If it stops flashing at,say, 3000 then the ignition is breaking down.
