we grabbed these 2 split window buses 2 weeks ago, they are too far gone to save and will be used to fix up other buses, but one still had an engine in it, lets see if it will still run.

I absolutely love it when you get these old engines running. Clearly this one is very strong and has plenty of life left in it. I'd bet that this Bus got junked because of the rust in the body -- looks like it would've been quite unsafe to drive with half the frame gone like that.

This video has inspired me. My buddy lets me hunt a 400 acre patch of ground that he grew up on but doesn’t do much with these days. In the middle of it sits an old VW that hasn’t run in the 15 years I’ve known home and probably for at least 15 years prior to that, maybe more. I’ve asked him a time a two what he’s ever going to do about it and he just kind of blows it off. I think I’m going to ask him soon if he’ll let me tinker with it to see if I can get it running. Been about 25 years since I wrenched on a VW.

I used to do that with old snowmobiles sitting out in a field. I once had to cut down a sapling tree to remove the snowmoble the tree was growing through the suspension. It was a John Deere. I actually restored it and sold it. It was a sigle cylinder 300. The thing ran great. Many guys would be amazed I could fire up a 40 year old engine. The thing with air cooled engines is the gaskets and seals can suddenly blow out from age. The smell of old engines has its own flavor ( the fuel tastes terrible too) thats for sure. The smell of rotting rubber and old moldy snowmobile seats had me pretty well hooked for years. I saved a lot of vintage snowmobiles from the torch thats for sure. Many cleaned up nice.

I enjoy and appreciate the knowledge you have, especially with small engines. I purchased a used larger generator and had to clean and polish the needle and seat because of it overflowing. Luckily someone else was getting rid of a similar model generator because of the engine being bad.

It's not a problem on modern cars (i.e. pretty much anything not owned by Mustie!) with breaker-less ignition, but on old ones where there are contact breakers, if they happen to be stopped in the closed position, the coil will sit there and heat up. Even my old (1981) bike has electronic ignition, so safe from this issue at least!
