I think that every RPG should have a feature where you can keep track of what's happened in the story so far, because I find that it's easy to forget what you were supposed to be doing in order to advance the game if you take a break from an RPG for too long, so it's very nice to see something like that in this game. 😁

So much this. My AADD and the large variety of games out there means it's easy to stumble on something new, pay attention to it for a bit, go back to an earlier game, and have no clue wtf I'm supposed to do. Did I talk to this village elder-looking fart? OH! He has like 3 boxes of text so that's gotta mean he's an important NP- crap. He's just thanking me for beating the three-headed giant hamster boss. ...Wait, wasn't that a while ago? Did I come back to this town to buy some items that were only available here, or something like that? Was there a side-quest here? Ugh... Devs often build their games with the notion you're going to play start to finish. True, but... not necessarily in one (series of) sitting. Getting back into a game a few weeks later can easily kill the experience when you don't remember what's what and the game has you in a "go talk to that guy somewhere in the world that we brought up last cut scene but nobody is going to talk about it anymore now so hopefully you kept some notes" moment.

Dragon Quest added the option to talk to your companions for that very reason, western RPGs usually have detailed quest logs, Dragon's Dogma had the journal... It's not a rare feature, but a welcome one.

Pretty much all the late SNES JRPGs didn't get translated for the reasons mentioned here. Came out too late on the SNES's life cycle when the N64 was either already out or about to come out in Japan, at a time when localization took several months and printing cartridges took several more leading to a 9-12 month lead time to get to market on a port, which, when a company projected forward to see if they'd get a decent ROI quickly realized they wouldn't due to the competition from the next-gen console. The result is a BUNCH of the best JRPGs on the system never made it over: Tactics Ogre, Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia (thouge ToP and TO at least got PSX ports) and also this game.
@JohnDoe-wq5eu
@JohnDoe-wq5eu 2 жыл бұрын
It's even tougher when you think of the absolute drought the N64 had during it's run. The SNES was the last time you saw JRPG's of the quality and quantity on a Nintendo console until probably the Wii and the switch. It was all Saturn and PSX during that time.

Meanwhile, in the modern day, last gen console games keep coming out for several years and people are less likely to move onto the next big thing. Not to mention year+ exclusivity. IMO, I still played last gen games well into the life of the newest gen even back then. I think the biggest factor was retailers willing to support two generations. This is now a non-factor with online shopping and digital releases.

Yeah, I played Idea no Hi a few years ago with the help of online translators, and its plot is the strongest point in the game. It's also quite similar to G•O•D in which some characters also have psychic powers, and every party member has a dedicated intro, ressembling Live a Live a little. It's a pity that it has some flaws gameplay wise, such as losing HP while you run (to make it more difficult running from visible enemies in dungeons) or the cumbersome clothing system you're forced to use in order to avoid getting damage while you walk through too hot or too cold areas. Maybe a romhack could get rid of it, that would improve the game by a lot.

Dang its always so bittersweet to find out about these games that were never US localized, you can always tell how much tlc goes into them- the graphics look so good and the battles are surprisingly unique (for the time) with behind the back (Dragonview?!) style and great animations, these are truly potential gems lost to the sands of time, I always think the translators that make it possible can't be thanked enough and to you for giving these types of games a new audience and awareness @SNESdrunk your doing the lord's work (or dare I say G.O.D.'s job ;P ) Also, speaking of did Maka Maka ever get the english treatment?!!
@akualung
@akualung 2 жыл бұрын
Nope, neither Maka Maka nor its spiritual sequel, Idea no Hi, were ever translated. And I don't know if it's better this way. Maka Maka was rushed and riddled with bugs, and Idea no Hi, while much more polished and having a pretty good story, had some bad design ideas that would putt many people off. Maybe if those flaws were fixed via romhack, it would be a game deserving of a fantranslation someday, but it would be quite complicated.

Ive played through it around a year ago, having a soft spot for snes games this really took me back to that era. Its a very charming and a soulfull rpg, comfy would be the right word to use here. Exploring the world and seeing whats happened to it and the people was always something to look forward too. It has a huge world map and a lot of exploration, a bunch of weird sidequests that leaves you confused but is sure to leave a giggle. Story is good, it has its twists and it moments but as I mentioned before charm is the thing here it captures that charm many rpgs seems to fail to do. Combat is great with a lot of areas to uprade and mix it up to your style. Unfortunately some work better than others and it will be a one sided choice. Its a great snes rpg, one of my top 5 on the snes, writing this brought happy memories and it was definietly a satisfying playtrough a must play for rpg and any gaming fans if youre looking for a unique yet familiar experience . The only gripe I have in the version Ive played was a unique sequence in Las Vegas where you have to say yes to everything, if you dont the game wont progress any further , I wish I knew that before because I had start the whole game again from scratch again. And those extra boss fights at the end, it was unique and never seen a other rpg do that.

Thank you. I really appreciate your videos. The lists and structures and overall genuiness of your thoughts and opinions of your content helps me a lot when deciding if a game is worth my time or not. I know with technology we can play a lot of these games "any way we can," but not all of us have hundreds of hours we can dedicate to gaming (anymore). I was always so disappointed that I never got a chance to play some of the games that were never translated and I had no idea how to patch files or any of that crap. Now that I know how, I have a LOT of games I always wanted to play but are now in my backlog. Thanks to your videos, I can make more informed decisions about what to play and what to avoid so I can maximize the couple of hours I have free to indulge in my love of Super Nintendo and other classic gaming consoles I grew up with. Have you ever considered doing a "GBA Drunk?" That was another console that had some amazing gems (and some incredible stinkers LOL).

I've been debating for sometime to add this one to my Super Famicom collection, but I didn't know enough about it to make any informed decision. This really helped give me the proper context about the game without spoiling it I've been curious about. I also have to add, just saying this personally speaking, I appreciate you saying no this isn't Final Fantasy 6 or Chrono Trigger but it doesn't have to be. I love those games, don't get me wrong, but I'm glad not every game is like them. I like variety in my old school rpgs so I can play something depending on my mood. I mean, one of my personal favorite rpgs of all time is Albert Odyssey on Sega Saturn which a lot of people find nearly unplayable. It's a very slow paced game, and it has these very quirky, Looney Tunes humor moments that for some takes them out of the game, but I find gives it it's charm. I find it a relaxing rpg, the kind you'd play on a rainy weekend or something (except for the end dungeon area. F**k that part full stop). If it had to be super serious the whole time, and have time travel, and Operas, and crazy combo attack systems, and was fast paced I'd find it exhausting to be quite frank and honest about it. If I want that, I'll play FF6/Chrono Trigger. If I don't want that, I'll play something else. If I want to play something that's a bit out there, long, but at it's core is a simple old school rpg I'll play something like this. It's nice to have options.

If you have a phone, a tablet, or any kind of computer, then you already own something that allows you to play it any way you can

@@duffman18 really? I always figured you needed something a bit more powerful to run some of the stuff. Now i'm gonna see what my 2in1 tablet can do, do you know any good sites to get emulators and ROMs from? Kinda excited now😄👍

I actually played this this year. I enjoyed it. It was clunky, but enjoyable. was hungry for more Earthbound-like rpgs

Already had the original ROM in my collection, but hadn't gotten around to playing it yet. Will definitely bump it up to the front of the To Play list with this English patch now :)

I hope the PSX rerelease gets translated some day, it's apparently a huge step up from the original SNES version. Also, Gen's victory dance is forever seared into my brain.

I think if they made a film about this games story, it would be popular

The cover art is clearly the guy who created Golden Boy. I figured this would be some sort of harem genre, as that's what he specializes in. But it doesn't seem like it.

Besides coming out late in SFC and SNES life, this game has religious elements all over. Nobody tells me who to worship here in Merica

There's one massive caveat to this game for people who want to play this on original hardware... The game constantly shifts from 240p to 480i whenever text is displayed onscreen. You can actually see the image in this very video shift ever so slightly every time a text box appears. In an emulator, it doesn't matter, but if you play this on an actual SNES on anything other than a CRT, you might not have such a good time. The constant resolution shifting is exactly like Chrono Cross.

What did you use for video capture? It didn't look as clean as your usual SNES capture.
