Fun fact: "Joreishi" means exorcist. So the title of the game basically translates to "Ghost Sweeper Mikami: The Exorcist is/has a Nice Body"
@TsukiCondor
@TsukiCondor 5 жыл бұрын

@jeffg492
@jeffg492 5 жыл бұрын
Actually the word that roughly translates to "exorcist" would be "Onmyōji" (individual who practices Onmyōdō, Japanese occultism involving cosmology, occultism, and divination to protect the capitol from evil spirits). It's commonly used as such in a lot of manga as well. Technically, "jorei" is the word for "exorcism," (noun) but joreishi seems to be some sort of bastardization of the term.
@ValkyrieTiara
@ValkyrieTiara 5 жыл бұрын
@@jeffg492 I mean 陰陽師 (onmyouji) are a LOT more than just exorcists. By your logic「神主」(kannushi) and「巫女」(miko) both ALSO mean "exorcist". In point of fact, in video games and manga onmyouji is more often used/translated as "summoner" than exorcist, as their MAIN ability in that context is summoning/communing with otherworldly spirits. LITERALLY THE OPPOSITE OF EXORCISM. In games and manga an exorcist-type character is MUCH MUCH more likely to be depicted as a kannushi/miko (shinto priest or priestess) or a buddhist monk/priest. FURTHERMORE, the kanji used for shi in joreishi is 師 which basically means "Person who is a master of [thing]" (like a doctor) so "exorcism師" is CLEARLY MEANT TO BE UNDERSTOOD, VERY SPECIFICALLY, AS "EXORCIST". All of which is beside the point. I just wanted to add a bit of fun context to the video with a translation of the title of the game. Translating Japanese into English is generally imprecise at the best of times, hence why I only gave a rough translation and even specifically said it only "basically means" that. Miss me with your "Well, actually" mansplainy bullshit.

in the dawn of anime culture back in the 90s GS Mikami was pretty popular in hispanic countries due to being aired in television with a mexican dub and being aired in television (along with Ranma 1/2, Zenki, Dragon Ball Z, Saint Seiya, Slayers, Slam Dunk and Sailor Moon, to name a few). It may sound weird that a pretty sexy oriented anime was aired in kid shows, but well... 90s were pretty rad. This game is on my hit list, actually. Thanks for sharing your review of it. Greetings!

We had the same line up in France, except Slam Dunk never aired and was distributed exclusively in video and Ghost Sweeper Mikami never hit our soil. A pity, I am certain I would have loved it as much as the other. Bah, at least, I got to watched it sub some months ago 👍

GSM had a great world building. It's about the closest equivalent to a Japanese Ghostbusters you can get. The anime ended right when the manga jumped the shark and became yet another boringly predictable battle shounen, with muh power scale, whereas in the start Mikami had to come up with intelligent tactics for intrigue resolution.

Haa. I've always felt the same way since i was a kid, at that time i didn't know what the difference was i just knew i liked the way certain shows looked back when i was 5-7 years old. Come to find out it was late night\early morning reruns of Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Voltron and that other team based show where they all had bird "gimmicks" hawk, eagle, owl, etc.... Their helmets all had like a beak shape as the top of the visor they were all great as far as i was concerned back then. It wasn't until sometime in 96 early 97 i saw Dragon Ball Z for the first time one early morning on a Saturday (before Cartoon Network started to air it) and in an instant i remembered the Anime from my childhood and was now old enough to find out what it was. About 6 months after that DBZ hit Cartoon Network, shit blew up and my friend and i found Berserk at an import shop in the mall, we watched all 25 episodes and it's had a deep place in my heart ever since. The older early 90's late 80's Anime is in the same place as Berserk for me. Well atleast Some of it😅 it wasn't All good, but stuff like "Nausica and the Valley of the Wind" , Ogre Slayer, Devilman, Vampire Hunter D and many many others were Amazing. 😄👍

Good review, that anime series actually was released outside of Japan, in latin america it was a hit and the dub was excellent, sadly it never came to the USA but I would really recommend it, it's a nice mix of comedy, action and horror, also the anime covers like 7 of 39 volumes of the manga and is really good too

Oh hey, my mother got this for us when she went to Hong Kong and came back with a floppy disk adapter for the SNES and a whole case of floppies. It was a neat game but we weren't exactly great at figuring out video games and this didn't tutorialize much so we only got a few levels into the game. I definitely remember the train stage, the boss-is-a-room-and-manifests-from-the-walls, and the giant ghost doll with freaky hands. Way too scary for us then, still a bit on the creepy side now.

Man i'm glad that Latin America was kind of independent from the US regarding which animes were adapted and released here during the 90's. We got to experience some unique ones like Mikami that never released in the US and much less censorship and alterarions from the original japanese versions of some others. Sadly that independence died in the 00's when big american companies like CN and Nickelodeon took over as middle men between us and Japan.

It's a common weapon type for smaller statured people to begin combat training with (I chose the sword and hand to hand but to each their own), and like Natsume here, most tend to stick with the baton/club/rod/small bludgeoning weapon as their primary. Now ya know, hopefully. lol Looks like a fun game though. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for it.

In USA, where japanime's existence as a medium was barely acknowledged by distributors? Where even saying "hell" or "god" is a big deal? Where televangelists tell you that pokemon form minds into satanism? No way this game gets localized. And if it doesn't the European imitators won't either. It had the ambition to be a Castlevania-like game, only with a more sprightly and cutesy style to tone down the grit. Natsume even hired Kinuyo Yamashita, who composed the soundtrack for the very first Castlevania
