Forgotten Glory: Andrew Gibson House Pre-Restoration

Andrew Gibson House has a rich history dating back to its construction in 1906. It was built as a sanctuary for the widows of retired seafarers, thanks to a generous donation from Andrew Gibson, a wealthy Liverpool cotton merchant and philanthropist. The imposing Gothic-style building originally consisted of 40 small bedsits, providing a place for widows to bring their own furniture and effects.
Over the years, the building underwent modifications, including a change in the 1980s to provide 25 larger flats and two smaller guest rooms. However, after its original function ceased, the building fell into disrepair and was left derelict for over a decade1.
Thanks to the efforts of local residents, councillors, and heritage campaigners, the building was saved from demolition. The restoration project, known as Gibson Park, has transformed the historic landmark into a development of luxury apartments and houses, preserving its architectural beauty and historical significance.
