Only just found this. It almost brings a tear to my eye. When I was a nipper we moved from Swindon to the Isle of Wight where my Dad, an aircraft engineer, joined Saunders Roe and worked on the Princess. Aviation changed dramatically during it’s development, resulting in the concept being shelved, but what a machine. Sad but inevitable that the three airframes suffered severe corrosion and had to be scrapped…..

Notice on the RC model's takeoff, the left float darn near nails the tug-boat. Beautiful plane, and model. That the model flew so well, speaks for the aerodynamic credibility of the Princess.

It's a flying boat because the fuselage also acts as a hull because it submersed in water,where as a seaplane is an aircraft which has floats attached to allow it to float,the fuselage doesn't enter the water.

I remember seeing these mothballed giants from my uncle's cabin cruiser in the early 60's as we left Southampton water for the Solent. My father, an aircraft engineer, knew their history well and was saddened that so magnificent a machine should not have succeeded.

Completely awesome! Imagine getting on an airplane moored near a major population center only to get off in Petit St. Vincent or some other glamorous place that is inconveniently far from an airstrip.

Always wondered how many hours it takes to build a model such as this. How much guts it takes to fly it the first time. Once attended a flying boat R/C competition in California from a large pond near some warehouses. One plane lost its signal and flew into a cement wall. Nothing but pieces. The owner was sick!

Is "seaplane" the right word? I thought an aircraft the bottom of whose fuselage was a hull on which the aircraft floated was a "flying boat", and a seaplane was one that had floats instead of a wheeled undercarriage and the fuselage of which was somewhat above the water.

It's a real shame that they were not even able to sell a single one of these elegant pieces of aviation history. It would have been interesting to see if they would have eventually made a profit for their owners. The only land plane close to their opulence was the Boeing 377 and it missed their level considerably. I think it would have done well "down under" for trips in the Orient, as far as the United Kingdom and Hawaii. Maybe even place like San Francisco.

When I see the old news reels, I'm amazed that these behemoths in reality ever got off the water. Best idea before WW 2, not so much after, what with all of the hard surface runways left behind by the military & the fact that BC of the war, the land based planes just kept getting bigger. & Bigger. Look at them NOW!!

But if you see, they couldn't land on land, which is a dangerous step for aviation. I agree that our planet consists mostly of the water, but that too with saltwater. The cost of removing or replacing the corroded parts of the aeroplane will cost a more and also will not be acceptable by the passenger's ability to pay for that.

Japan, Canada and Russia are the only makers if flying boats now (I think). There is the water bomber from Canada, the Japanese SDF patrol/rescue plane and Beriev was making a flying boat they were trying to sell to the west.

In the 60s there was a smaller flying boat up on the seafront at West Cowes opposite SR's factory in East Cowes. It was huge. I've no idea what happened to it but hopefully not scrapped.
@merccadoosis8847
@merccadoosis8847 4 жыл бұрын
But why were they scrapped? I read years ago that they were not economically efficient - that the cost of operation & insurance were prohibitive and there wasn't all that much utility to them. Dunno if this is true but it seems to me that if they were efficient economically or otherwise, many more would have been produced and used everywhere.

G'day, This is an excellent video. The only thing which "gives the game away" during the Ground-to-Air flight-footage, that it's a Model flying in the imagery, was the Gust-Response Times of the Aeroplane...; because a 10-Engined (4x2 + 2 = 6 Airscrews, 4 being Contra-Rotating...!) FLYING BOAT {not a "Seaplane" as the Title misapprehends}..., simply doesn't "twitch & jump about...", like that (!). But the gravest mistake in the Video, in my (humble ?) opinion, was to persist in using Software-induced FAKE-Sepia-Tones, on all the 1940s/'50s stock-footage of the Princess...; though I can indeed see validity in the argurment that maybe 20 or 30 seconds of Sepia-Tones invokes the "Olden Times" cliched emotionsl response, from all the Viewers.... The problem as I see it, is that Sepia-Tones were well obsolete by 1928, all over the British Empire, even for the lowest-budget users of Kodak "Box Brownies, taking Stills...; whereas in the heady dayze of Britain before they realised their Imperial Powers had evaporated (at Suez, in '56) they were using crispy fine-grained Black & White Monochrome, any time they couldn't afford Kodachrome or Technicolour... Just(ifiably ?) sayin', Take it easy, Such is Life... ;-p Ciao !

I actually saw these flying boats before they were broken up. The ferry to the Isle of white used to pass quite close. I always felt a sadness that they were cocooned as they were. All in a dull grey, with only the general outline......Perhaps it is better to think of them in their glory days. The last of the breed, the romance period of flying.
