Here's some info on Martian Gothic, the writer/designer Stephen Marley wasn't happy at all with the final product, admitting there were too many gameplay problems, it was rushed, there are numerous game breaking bugs in the PC version, etc... He conceived the game years earlier as a sci-fi horror novel about a haunted house on Mars, but eventually abandoned it. However, his idea was reignited when he played the original Resident Evil, and thought the game's explanation as to why Chris and co. couldn't just go outside the mansion was pretty contrived and then he remembered his haunted house on Mars idea and tried to turn it into a game. Problem was Creative Reality had no experience at all in this kind of game, being veterans of the Amiga and Commodore, the crew was very small and unexperienced with 3D, which led to a lot of creative problems in development, like the zombies weren't supposed to come in until towards the end, and ghosts were supposed to be the main enemy but because the animation for the ghosts looked quite poor and they had trouble implementing them, the zombies became the main enemy and this is also a reason why the zombies don't stay dead in the game. He also said that the Mars base was originally supposed to look more like a Gothic mansion or normal building in space to break away from the industrial aesthetic that the Alien movies had made so popular in Sci-Fi horror, but admits that a lot of the game just looks like an Alien set anyway. He also said in an interview that he believes that the Dead Space franchise took some inspiration from Martian Gothic, but he personally felt that DS was too depressing and bleak for his taste, which was something he was worried about with Martian Gothic, so he had a campy spoof radio play as a bonus in the game.

I'm not entirely sure about this but when clicking on the Martian Mayhem game on a computer terminal I think the dialogue was actually making fun of resident evil games, like how you would find a key that didn't fit a certain lock. I found it pretty funny when playing as a kid.

I still love how the director for _Martian Gothic_ claimed that the Japanese guy was canonically "Zen" to explain away how he sounds like they just grabbed the guy who delivered their sandwiches and forced him to read lines. The director maintains this was deliberate, even though the character's dull, flat, monotonous delivery adds absolutely _nothing_ to the plot and just comes off as an excuse to save face for an actor's terrible performance.

The scariest PS1 game for me was intelligent qube, the demo version. The release version has music and more stuff to do, but the demo version is so unbelievably unnerving. No music, the sounds are loud and echo around you and the sound of the cubes slowly going towards you without anything else but your audiable steps is horrifying. It just proves that if you remove the music in a game that is already quite unsetteling it amplifies the games creepiness. It may sound like a joke, but look up videos on the demo version. It gave my childhood self ptsd from playing that said version again.

Great video! I've played most of these and I think your takes are spot on. Chaos Break: This was kind of a "sequel" to an arcade game called "Chaos Heat", although the gameplay is quite different. But still, that may explain the more action-oriented feel that you mentioned. One more difference between Rick and Mitsuki is that while Rick's weapon always has he same rate of fire with each shot doing the same amount of damage, Mitsuki's guns start off slow and speed up as you hold the fire button, and the power of each shot increases as well. This can become important toward the end of the game when your ammo is running low and you've already picked up all the refills. Overblood: There's also an "Overblood 2", but as far as I've played it, it has nothing to do with the original aside from the name. The Note: I played this back in the day but I hardly remember anything about it, lol. I don't think I hated it, though. Fear Effect: I haven't really played them, but this series was a major property in Europe and Oceania, so it's weird for me to hear it called "forgotten". Hellnight: This is super tense with a weird background/story. I only played through once, keeping Naomi safe until the end, but maybe one day I'll play again and try to see some other endings. Virus: I didn't even know this existed until last year. And it looked... not good, as you indicate. Martin Gothic: Looks great, but the writing and acting are so bad and the puzzles so frustrating that I gave up after only an hour or two. I did read a walkthrough back then, and from what I remember it looks like you got much further than I did. On PS2, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on "Echo Night: Beyond". It's not the greatest game but it's still one of my favourites. You might need a real PS2 to play it though, because the last time I tried to emulate it, most of the walls didn't draw properly (something to do with how the game draws shiny metal walls, I think).

Once I saw Martian Gothic, I got excited! I haven’t beaten it but I’ve played a big chunk of it and it was quite fun. A very puzzle oriented game w/ some early ps1 spooky graphics. Some of the main mechanics like the vents were a bit janky and hard to figure out at first but once you kinda know what to do you can solve puzzles and all.

You forgot to add Galerians, but over all this is an amazing list. Dead Effect, and Martin Gothic were some of the most amazing games I have ever played even though they were in most peoples eyes considered garbage. All 3 of these games have a thrill and intense game play. Much of this is due to the chaos created by lack of essential information but that the fun part. Its like dating someone who is always upset and never tells you why but you by some magical intervention you say/do the right things leading to progress in the relationship. If you are a enjoy raging you will love these games. They have depth, and an amazing story's. Give them a try if you have a boring week going on.

Great list! I was in college in the heyday of the Playstation 1, so I remember all of these titles well. One thing I'd recommend(although I know it's a subjective preference thing) is to play them at native pixel resolution w/integer scaling to 4k and no bilinear filters if using something like DuckStation for a closer experience to how it looked at the time. There's better cohesion with the pixels that make up the 2d textures blending with the pixels that would normally appear on the edges of the polygons at native res(upscaling removes them from the polygons). On characters especially, they were constructed with native res in mind which is why they can look weird and flat upscaled.

Something worth noting about Fear Effect, outside of it being not-quite-forgotten, is that it's had two sequels (Fear Effect 2 and Fear Effect: Sedna) as well as the upcoming remake Fear Effect: Reinvented. However, in spite of more optimistic messages from the dev team, the latter appears to be stuck in development hell - kind of ironic to say especially given a particular plot point of the game - and has long shot past its expected releease date which, if I'm not mistaken, should have been maybe a year or so after Sedna came out. In any case. it may be worth considering doing a video on just the history of this game if you are interested.

For a person who played Hellnight over and over. Got all endings. I must say it is the first game to implement real atmospheric horror. No jump scares. Just creepy people, in a creepy place. Then comes the creepy monster. I would like to add that running is not just the option. Your companions, other than Naomi, can shoot the monster. Kamiya, Rene, and that Russian soldier have weapons. The game have 5 different endings and amazing background 3 to 4 tunes music in each level. The monster evolves and get faster and smarter with your progress in the game. And it gets REALLY weird at the end. It deserves a remake if it will retain the creepiness.

It's kinda the cool thing about it... the cartoon look never really gets old, because a cartoon is always a cartoon regardless of the era, you know? It looks like Megaman Legends IMO. hellnight omfg i cant believe it i love this game since 23 years i played it at a very young age and got so obsessed with it and i still play it today from time to time fooling around teasing the hybrid (dark messiah) .hellnight was never forgotten at least from my site .it’s so sad this game is so underrated cuz i so badly wish for it to get a remake hence i would do it myself if i could it’s like my favorite baby .the hybrid also chance his appearance, sounds, speed and behavior over the game and also u can play with 5 different characters naomi is the only only one who can’t fight back to slow him down for a moment the other s have guns to shoot and make him kneel so u can escape.if u know how to u even can drop some characters without them dying so u could get them back or if u do a certain way u can even play as one of the hybrid s breed himself which is trying to defeat its master .with one character (which is actually my favorite)u even can get an bad ending to the game …phew sorry i could not hold back i love this game and could talk endless about it

I remember playing Overblood in ~1997, when I was little child, right after the Resident Evil. I thought that main character is Barry Burton :D I also couldn't get out of the first room.

I played Fear Effect 2 when i was primary school 😂 This game unique for a ps1 game and it is action and horror genre, the clown boss freaks me out. And I think some people forgot Galerians, this game and the mechanics are awesome. 👌

I love Martian Gothic Unification! I am trying to find a clean copy now. I never realized Fear Effect was a horror game. I honestly never looked into it much. Pretty silly of me given its name.. LOL

I remember when Overblood came out. That was a year or so after Resident Evil, and my neighbor, a very nice and sweet (but not exactly bright) kid came to my house thrilled as fuck, telling me that he had just seen Resident Evil 2 at the store. That surprised me, because back then I used to keep myself very updated about video game news. I bought every single magazine, every single month, and I hadn’t read anything about RE2. So off we went to the store, after lunch, and what did we see? Overblood. I told my neighbor that wasn’t Resident Evil 2, it was a whole different game; the hell was he on about it being RE2? My neighbor’s answer? “Well, the guy in the cover looks like Barry Burton, so I figure this was Resident Evil 2”

Fear effect and fear effect 2 were in every magazine in the late 90s. It was by no means going "under the radar"

I really enjoyed the X-FIles RE clone. It was janky and buggy but quite enjoyable for that old school vibe. Fear Effect was strange and memorable too.

It's one of my all-time favourite games, so I have to say, some of the things you've said about Hellnight are not entirely correct or oversimplified. Like, as long as you have Naomi as your travel partner, you can sense the monster on the map screen, showing itself as a dot/square (if it's near you, that is), so it's not always sound-based. And slowly walking around it is *not* the only thing you can do to avoid it, as having any other of the party members besides Naomi gives you the ability to stun it with their weaponry, allowing you to walk right past it. Each person has a limited number of shots they can use until they run out (I don't think there's any way to recharge them in the game besides switching partners, correct me if I'm wrong), so you gotta use it wisely, like when you're being cornered. And I think it's worth mentioning that to switch partners, you have to let the previous one die, as they also serve as a one-time shield from the monster if it catches you. Also, if I remember correctly, the monster becomes faster in the later levels, as it's constantly mutating and growing in strength, but that could be just a visual thingy, I dunno, it's been some years since I've finished it. Either way, it's a cool review, but lowkey looks like you've reviewed the game based on its earliest chapters only.

I always remember Parasite Eve 2 bring a really good game. It was really unheard of in my neck of the woods with Resident Evil/ Dino Crisis bring the big hitters. Fear Effect was awesome I played that when first out and it really was like playing a next level game. They really pushed the system with that one.

Idk why you would ever tell someone to not try out a game. Experiencing obscure bad games for yourself is fun.

Dude its really nice that u discovered hellnight and give it the credit it deserves Buttt… To say the monster is slow shows absolutely that u only played the earlier sections of the game and not played it thru as of makin this vid. Get to the section where the monster evolves even further into the messiah and then u will see if the monster is “painfully” slow or not 😉😉 There multiple endings and a really twisted story which unravels. It was my 4th fav. Horror game after the obvious ones silent hill, resident evil and dino crisis. And no it’s definitely more of a hide n seek kinda game not a “walkin sim” for sure!!
