My 8 year old nephew plays a Forest gnome ranger (beastmaster) with a wolf companion. The party (the other two are elven Druids) rescued the young wolf from a snare and having been abandoned by her pack she just started hanging out with them so it seemed natural for him to take Beastmaster at lvl3. He hasn’t tried riding her yet but it might help him keep up with the forest elves! They’re on a homebrew at the moment but I’m doing loads of foreshadowing so we can segue into Storm Kings Thunder when we finish the current arc and hit lvl5. Great to rediscover D&D after 30 years and reintroduce it to a new generation.

One of my favorite characters I've ever played was a gnome Trickery Cleric with the charlatan background. He was a conman who tricked people, not because he wanted lots of money, but because he enjoyed reminding people not to get a big head. He had an almost pathological need to puncture over-inflated egos. If he could think of a way to make a stuffy egomaniac look foolish, he'd do it, consequences be damned.
@Burncsb5 жыл бұрын
That's ok I think, although there are times that I find letting the egomaniacal crazy fuckers fall on their own holes a good strategy on itself! Egos are enemies of society, take dictators, they are usually egomaniacal psychopaths.

One of my best friends is a gnome and the other is a halfling, they own a jewellers shop, Glittering Wonders, it's located in Baldur's Gate, high town area, close to the enchanters quarters, they are open from 8:30 till 19:30 all the time save weekend then they are closed, you will not believe the quality of work they have when it comes down to belt buckles let alone rings or other pieces as such.

Good news: 2024 Gnomes are _arguably_ the most powerful species choice, especially in the latter half of the game, for being essentially psychological tanks. They get advantage on _all_ Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws.

Not a bad video. To broaden the information you present, which is heavily rooted in both the Realms and 5e (sometimes, I wonder if I should do my own channel for this stuff)... Gnomes were a late addition to the "standard race array" in D&D; Humans, Elves, Dwarves and Halflings/Hobbits appeared in the original "Men and Magic" booklet for D&D (1974), whilst Gnomes didn't show up until the AD&D 1e PHB was released 4 years later. Gnomes have struggled to define themselves in D&D for a long time, as the "generic" gnome of pre-4e is more or less a dwarf with some elfish character traits and played for comedy. Tinker Gnomes - gnomes with a distinct dedication to producing advanced technology - first appeared in the Dragonlance setting for AD&D, where they were presented (badly) as a comic relief race. The idea was later reused with a good deal more seriousness in the Known World setting of BECMI, aka "Mystara", where the "Skygnomes" lived inside a flying artificial island that they made for themselves. The 5e Rock Gnome has absorbed the Tinker Gnome archetype to strengthen itself. The original gnomish subraces were Rock, Forest and Deep/Underdark (also called Svirfneblin). The obscure Uldra was a taiga and tundra-dweller of uncertain, possibly gnomish, lineage. Setting-specific variants included Earth and Sky Gnomes in Mystara, and the bungling inventor-themed Tinker Gnomes of Dragonlance & Spelljammer (with a competent subrace called the Thinker Gnomes). Arcane and River Gnomes appeared in Dragon Magazine for 3rd edition, whilst Chaos, Whisper, Wavecrest and Ice Gnomes appeared in various 3e splatbooks. In 4th edition's Nentir Vale setting, gnomes are a tormented race of small fey native to the Feywild who spent generations enslaved by the Fomorians, a race of insane, deformed faerie giants with powerful magic. Their affinity for illusion allowed them to ultimately escape their captivity, but the psychological scars from their imprisonment affect their culture deeply, including a deep sense of paranoia, a clinging to humor for comfort/disguise, and a certain "doomsday prepper" mentality. They did not appear in the first 4e PHB due to WotC's desire to reinvent them and give them a stronger cultural background and "hook", instead appearing in the 2nd PHB. 4e/Feywild Gnomes look more like miniature elves, whereas traditionally gnomes look more like dwarves. Spriggans are Feywild Gnomes that were warped by their Fomorian masters into creatures more like themselves, turning them into goblin-like beings with mismatched eyes (one is larger than the other, and an unearthly milky hue) and the power to temporarily assume a much larger and stronger form. Svirfneblin returned to 4e in the splatbook "Into The Unknown: The Dungeon Survival Handbook"; aside from their new enmity with the fomorians, they are fairly faithful to their traditional lore, and even have racial utility powers to reflect their racial inclination towards earth elementalism. The relationship between gnomes and kobolds in 5e is a retcon of their traditional rivalry, in which their enmity stems entirely from Kurtulmak's bitterness over being subjected to one of Garl Glittergold's pranks. In the Mystara setting, gnomes and dwarves share a common ancestor, called the Kogolor; after prehistoric Mystara was devastated by a nuclear winter, an Immortal (God) named Kagyar placed a selection of Kogolors in Mystara's hollow interior, which serves as a living museum for extinct races and cultures, and transformed the rest into dwarves to guarantee their survival in the face of a similar apocalypse. Another Immortal who had ascended from Kogolor stock, Garal Glitterlode, subsequently took some Kogolors himself and turned them into the first gnomes, hoping to preserve what he saw as the fundamental essence of his people but also making them more resilient and adaptable than they had been.

I’ve always seen gnomes as being a cousin species to dwarves. They’re more interested in gems than metals. Their work on jewelry led to skill at intricate crafting delicate items which in time led to an obsession with clockwork and mechanics leading to them becoming known for creating devices. This all led to them growing further and further distant from dwarves until now they are as at home amongst human communities as amongst dwarves.

My first ever character when I started dnd was a Forrest gnome bard. He absolutely just loved music and wanted to keep exploring it, eventually realizing how to use magic through song. However, after getting kick out of his home for an accident he did(tried out fire magic for the first time and almost got people killed) he would try out adventuring, only to become an even more paranoid man. He became the party's planer/pseudo leader, and while music was still his pride and joy, he's become somewhat traumatized and is paranoid of everything and everyone. That statue in the corner may come to life. What if there's a curse on this item/treasure? What will happen if this spell doesn't work? Can I risk wasting this bardic inspiration? Who needs it the most? He has been one of my favorite characters to ever run, and though he's super paranoid, he tries to have fun with his friends because they're the only ones he truly trusts(besides his pet bunny of course)

Kardel Not in 5e. Most of the people I play with, when they play a gnome at all, make them more boisterous and energetic than halflings.
@jacobbender35734 жыл бұрын
Yes there are. Halflings are smaller than Gnomes. Halflings have less of an industrious, inventive culture and are more of simple, cottage, farm folk. Halflings come from an aspect of Chauntea, whereas Gnomes come from the Gnome God Glittergold. Gnomes are usually more energetic too. Halflings know how to relax, wind down and throw a party, and Gnomes would rather tinker, create, and be busy.
@jacobbender35734 жыл бұрын
Also, Halflings have big hairy feet and don't need to wear shoes. Another key difference from Gnomes.
