I found a really unique Farmall tractor that has been swapped with a chevy 350 and Gm 4 speed. It hasn't run in years so I'm going to try get it running again and actually drive it home!

A farmer who worked with me, build a similar tractor in the early eighties. His had an automatic transmission behind the engine. It would downshift during a hard pull. He had dual wheels on the back. Amazingly the original transmission survived plowing fields for years while running with all that power.

Gotta say the guy who built it did a fine job considering all the combobbery that had to be performed for the swap! “Derek, the old American engine whisperer”. I like the way he diagnoses just by listening for what the noises are, where from, what’s the quality of sound & possible meanings. In my own small way, I’m like that with Japanese multi cylinder two cycle bike engines, and there’s a surprisingly long list of stuff that can go wrong with them, despite the low number of moving parts. I’m over fussy, and looking back, I don’t think that’s been a good call at all. So, watching Derek’s entire attitude to things is refreshing. “Good enough for the girls we date” is my favourite. Wonder if he says that within arm swinging distance of Jessica?

What a great combination: Farmall + Chevy V8. I learned to drive a tractor on dad's '46 H back in the '50s. Spent a lot of time riding that old horse, plus his M and 450. They were a very reliable and versatile tractor. Grandpa and my uncles all had an H at one time. Today I own a 1948 H with a Heisler 9-speed (overdrive); works like a charm. Well, I hope you have it purring like a kitten and doing "hold-shots". Thanks for the ride.

A feller found that there was sooo much content in this odyssey, that he had to give his think box and his peepers a rest a few times and break it down into bite-size pieces to chomp on, or to make it easier to pick up what a guy was laying down. All-in-all, it was a most enjoyable viewing experience - Glad to see you made it back safely and intact!

I drove my first 8N home a similar distance. The camera fails to convey how terrifying a tractor is at any type of speed! I wore a wide rimmed hat and still got sunburned and almost heat stroke! Thanks for sharing Derek. Now I'm thinking about the split 8N on marketplace with it's engine in pieces! How about a TBi vortec V6 8N?

If you can find a good book for auto repair and maintenance from the 1970s or some better shop manuals they'll have good guides on reading plugs. Better if it has color photos. Often the black and white photos or worse the two color illustrations are difficult to get a feel for it from, but sadly that's most of the books and shop manuals. Someone might have something decent on the interwebs. It's a matrix of photos of plugs in different conditions with a description of what each one means.

Derek kicks tire and states tire pressure! Sticks nose in gas tank and takes huge huff and breaks out hacking and coughing and states, "It's probable fine. Nope!" Calls air cleaner a "salad bowel". "The oil that did come out, you wanna talk about a glitter party. The camshaft is grinding its own cam profile...who knows what it's gonna come up with". 😎 Classic Derek/VGG! Love it! Lol!

Hey Derek, that gray paste you found in the sediment bowl - that's the result of ethanol fuel and whatever type of pot metal they used to make the sediment bowl housing. It more/less starts dissolving it. Will plug a fuel system up solid.
