As a romanian, I can say without a shed of doubt that she was, is and will remain one of the most beloved rulers of the romanian people and by far, the most beloved Queen of Romania. She is also called The Queen of Hearts here. She was highly educated, had tact and diplomacy like no other and deeply loved Romania and her people, even though she wasn't a natural born romanian herself.

What an extraordinary woman. I might have crumbled with each of my children taken immediately from me, but this woman, eventually Her Majesty worked as a wartime nurse and lived by her own will. Imagine a sitting queen tending to the sick, infected and contagious - worried more for their dignity than her own health. Whether you agree with this reasoning or not, empathy obviously mattered to her. Unbelievable.

I would Love to see you guys do a video on Princess Alice of Greece, the mother of Prince Phillip. Born deaf, diagnosed with Schizophrenia, confined to an asylum, escaping from the asylum to shelter Jews during the war (conveniently forgetting how to lip read when the authorities came looking), before finally forsaking royalty to become a nun. What a badass.

I, too, would love to see a documentary about Alice of Battenberg, Prince Phillip's mother, in addition to the existing one on KZbin (as of 4/2023). Perhaps a series of documentaries to draw the lines between Queen Victria's grandchildren & their relationships... not just to each other but as the ancestors of the current Royal Families today, i.e. The British Royal Monarchy. What a strong brood of women these granddaughters of Queen Victoria were during times of great political and societal change that still affects the world today. These women are gone but not forgotten. A documentary series would be a wonderful tribute to them.

I was researching Queen Maria and found your video. First, I must thank you for all the information you provided in an interesting, professional manner. She was quite fascinating especially as a woman who, during this and in so many periods in History, were largely ignored. Queen Marie stood out by allowing her intelligence speak for itself. Intelligence doesn’t care if you’re a man or woman, dog, cat, or goldfish. You will never influence others in a positive sense if you’re not smart.

Amazing woman. Through sheer force of will she charmed the Allies into not only restoring her country's territory, but enlarging it. Her memoir is fascinating, well worth the read. She saw no reason why she could not be as effective as queen of her land as her grandmother was in her empire and set out to defy everyone's expectations. This forcefulness was tempered by her immense empathy for those who suffered. She was expert at harnessing her image to forward her goals, be it dressed in her nursing uniform to encourage others help the wounded or wearing her crown to glamourise and enhance her nation's negotiating position. Brilliant woman. Cheers. 😀

I love Queen Marie of Romania. Many of her possessions are in the museum in Mary hill in Goldendale Wash. She was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria and she loved her country..go see this fabulous museum.
@markmh835
@markmh835 2 жыл бұрын
Ah, the Maryhill Museum in Goldendale, Washington, in the Columbia River Gorge across from Oregon -- one of my favorite places! Considered by some to be the most isolated museum in America with the most astounding collection, it should be on every American's bucket list. In addition to the Queen Maria Collection, the museum boasts tremendous art, sculpture (Rodin), and miniature fashion models from Paris. Truly something for everyone. Why would such an isolated museum halfway around the world from Romania own the personal possessions of the famous Queen Maria, you ask? The short answer is that Queen Maria was a personal friend of Sam Hill, the founder of the Great Northern Railway Company, who lived in Washington state. She gave him many of her personal possessions in her dowagership, and he displayed them in the new structure that was built to be his home but never was -- Maryhill. Do make an effort to see its collections if you are ever in the vicinity in the Pacific Northwest.

I really enjoyed this video, although, on a personal level, it really hurt to learn that Marie's mother was emotionally distant from her children. I can understand when men are distant from their children since I was TERRIFIED of my father when I was growing up, but a mother? I really don't understand when mothers don't love their children. When I was still young and naive, I thought that all mothers were loving and protective like mine. I grew up very close to my mother until I lost her when I was twelve years old; from the time she learned that she was pregnant with me, until the day she died, she always kept me close to her, and loved me unconditionally.

I'm so sorry that you lost your mother so early. I'm also sorry that you had a father that was terrifying. I hope that you had someone else in your life, after your mother passed away that you could lean on. I wish that all mothers were loving and protective like yours. It's not the experience I had but it's the experience I tried to give my daughter. I think I did a pretty good job since we're still good friends and she's almost 30. Sending love, light and big hugs, k
@CuteDwarf11
@CuteDwarf11 2 жыл бұрын
@@kfemme68 Thank you. I didn't have anyone to lean on after Mama died, to be honest. My father's second youngest sister was the only one among his female siblings to have met my mother when she was still alive, and she was the closest one I had to a surrogate mother, but she had her own children, and her own problems, so she couldn't always be there; my older sister was a manipulative liar, and domineering control freak who could charm the skin off an angry snake, just like my father, so I couldn't lean on any of them, and most of my family members on both sides were distant, even indifferent. I've distanced myself from most of my family. Only a few of them actually became close to me, and began understanding what I had been going through in later years; they are the outcasts of the family, just like me, and we try to offer support to each other, even if we are living miles apart. I also have a close bond with my older sister's children, along with nephews and nieces from my cousins, although I can't stand their parents, and vice versa; I don't believe in having those children pay for their parents' crimes. I'm glad you and your daughter have a close bond; it's something I'm sure my mother and I would have had if she had lived to see me grow to adulthood, and I cherish the closeness we shared in the years I had her with me.

Really nice video. I am from Romania and, as everywhere, the historical information delivered to the country's citizens on is distorted. For example, it's not widely known that she would have had any affair and unwanted pregnancy or that she would have been the 'true' ruler of the country. That wouldn't look good right? She's only known for being a good kind motherly figure who loved her husband and country dearely. It's really interesting to see how history "changes" with perspective! P.S. you nailed the Alba Iulia pronuntiation!

A very good woman who saved many lives during WW2. Sadly, not everybody can be Helen or Irene Sendler or any of the others who devoted their lives to helping others. Makes you wonder how many civilians and soldiers stood by while atrocities were being committed next door.

Didn't the current Queen Elizabeth II also spend time in Malta before her father's death as Price Philip had naval duties in the area? How strange, I wonder if Malta is still used this way.

Nice doing this, but some info is wrong or unaccounted for: Carol I was not Marie's father in law, he was her husband's fraternal uncle; fact she had an affair with Gheorghe Cantacuzino and even a child is pure gossip and speculation, not sure where you got this from ..., minute 8:33 and again the end the photo depicts one of her daughters - Queen Marioara of Yugoslavia; entering the first world war only in 1916 was due to the fact that the late king Carol I and close advisors ( country's strategists) did not want to be in the war on the side of Germany, in spite of the family ties + plus agreements in place. When joining war they did it on the side of Britain & Co since they used as escape the agreement with Germany itself, which said Romania stands by its side if attacked, but that wasn't the case. Last, Romania did not literally lose the war, the south part and the capital was under German ocupation for 2 years, but continued to fight, the royal family and government, nobles etc temporarily moved in the north, to Iasi (Iasy) city. Hope you'll find this useful.

It's not true that Marie got paired with Ferdinand because her cousin George married May of Teck. It was the other way around: George eventually took up with his older brother's fiancée because Marie -- thanks to the influence of her mother -- turned him down.

You will find that the region of Transylvania was not part of Romania when Bram Stoker wrote "Dracula."-it was part of the Hungarian portion of the Austro-Hungarian empire and did not become Romanian until the Treaty of Neully between that empire and Romania.

That should have been the Treaty of Trianon that ceded Transylvania to Romania from Hungary -Neully Treaty was about Bulgaria not Hungary!

She was not the last Queen. King Michael's wife, Queen Anne was the last Queen. Carol was also not her father in law as her husband was Carols nephew, not his son.

Anne married Michael after he abdicated the throne so she was only Queen in pretense.

It may be a somewhat uncanny resemblance but 8:30-8:35 looks very much like HRH Princess Maria Jose at the time of her marriage to HRH Humbert Hereditary Prince of Italy although they were a generation apart in age. I would be interested if anyone else sees the resemblance to Maria Jose of Belgium in 1930 at the time of her betrothal as they were all related at some point even if one needed to change their religion an issue which seems lost on young people of today.

Thank you for sharing this, fun fact Queen Victoria actually wanted Marie to marry George however Marie's mother wouldn't hear of it, she hated her husbands family. Her mother was an anglophone, and her father was a British Prince 😅
