You seem to be under the misconception that the GIGN replaced their auto pistols with revolvers.... that wasn't the case. The GIGN carried, and still often carries today, BOTH a semi-auto pistol and the revolver. It makes sense in the original GIGN mission framework which was strongly oriented to hostage rescue in very crowded environment (in particular the MR73 was very successful during highjacked plane intervention) where few accurate shots are essential. Also the GIGN kept the "shoot to disable" rather than kill well into the 2000. Remember that the GIGN unlike the SAS is a purely police oriented unit, they will not be used in a military theater. The MR73 was also associated with a specific ammunition (the THV, you can google it), very light, very fast, etremely effective against both soft tissues and the body armor of that era. But the THV didn't cycle well in semi-auto but were great in a 357mag... especially one built to withstand higher than usual pressures.

Someone probably commented this already, but the Gendarmerie is a weird case : they are a police force (as in, their duties are the same as the national police) but they are a part of the French Armed Forces, but depend on the Ministry of the Interior due to the aforementioned police duties. They usually cover the rural parts of France, while the national police is concentrated in the more urban areas. So, basically, they are cops with military ranks.

@rwsthedemonking That's just not true, the MR73 is carried by almost every single GIGN operative, as a sidearm, even if they already have a sidearm. That's only true if you look at how often they got shot, which is quite rarely, but if you look at all GIGN operations, they never really shoot in the first place IIRC it's about 98% of missions have no rounds fired. But if you mean range only as in it's carried only on the range, it's demonstrably false. There is a case to be made about actual use however, but not a very good one.

@rwsthedemonking What? A tactically good gun? The MR73 was extremely customizable, hell we're watching a video about a sniper-revolver. It's very accurate, has a good grip, sighing, no safety, and most importantly, extremely fucking reliable. Hell I'd say this is probably one of the most tactically sound firearms you could choose. The only sidearm I can even think to compare it to is the HK Mk23, and that's meant to substitute for a rifle.

I am French. And to correct one thing you said. The GIGN goes also on missions outside France. But it concern only the Paris GIGN with is the REAL GIGN. There are others GIGN antennas all around France but not as well trained like The Paris GIGN unit. So they've already had mission in Africa to free French prisoners from terrorist. They also went to Afghanistan for the same reasons, and they also do Top Secret Mission with the Commandos Marine (witch are the pinnacle of the French army). And just to say the Gendarmery is also part of the military. So the GIGN is a military special force witch acts in France ost of the time and witch can act outside France. And to finish, there is also a unit like this but in the French police witch is called The RAID.

Back in the 90s, Jeff Cooper decried the spray and pray cop shootings. He proposed arming cops with Ruger Blackhawks in .357 magnum. The police seem to emphasize mag changes over marksmanship. Actions at the point of contact are the result of training. Then there is the tendency of law enforcement agencies, AND applicants, to utilize the internet for recruiting. So, some newbie from Bugtussell hires on to work in Dallas or Atlanta based on their aptitude score in Nowheresville U.S.A. police academy. Oh yeah, all those cops from WokeA Stan are headed your way. Y'all have a GOODN.

@@bikecommuter24 Well they certainly have the capacities and abilitites to react optimally if things get ugly, but they are heavily trained in de-escalation aswell, they try to prevent collateral damage as much as possible at all times, which is why most of their operations end up with not a single shot having being fired. They are not there to kill people per se, they are there to resolve a difficult situation. They are not hot heads, their selection process makes sure of that. I´ve heard that one GIGN got shot and still managed to kill three terrorists with such a revolver, after he was shot in the right arm, which is quite remarkable, as he was badly injured, there were plenty of non-targets and the terrorists had automatic rifles. Speaking of planes, AFAIK, only the Austrian special police ever managed to end a hostage situation in a plane whilst it was flying at high altitude. The thing was, that one of its members was off duty when some idiot pulled a weapon right next to him...

@@K3end0 I think so. I, however, find it less amazing than the prior one. I´d very much like the odds of the second scenario as even a highly trained professional can get sucker-punched and taking away a weapon from an untrained person, while being highly trained yourself doesn´t sound too risky. The French cop, on the other hand, had a busted arm, was in great pain and had lost a lot of blood. Even without all this hardly any cop would fancy a shootout against three terrorists with only a revolver in your non-dominant hand, let alone when they already know your position and you can´t just fire back willy nilly without risking shooting civilians...

The blueing on that revolver is absolutely stunning ! Almost as good as the perfection that is the Colt Royal blue finish. If the action is only half as good as it looks it will be awesome, I do love a good revolver.

Pistols are usually more difficult to attain in tightly regulated regions than rifles precisely because you may conceal them. In some places they add long bits of metal to pistols so they classify as "rifle" in length.
@30cal23
@30cal23 4 жыл бұрын
actually thats horseshit the pistols are much much more heavily regulated in commie parts of america (Commiefornia, CommiOregon, and New Commie York) its much easier to obtain a bolt action rifle for hunting (a hunting rifle and sniper rifle have few differences other than hunting rifles usually being tailored by their users for hunting close range whereas the sniper would turn his hunting rifle into a tack driver through parts and constant handloading i.e they are the same thing but used and maintained differently) semi auto rifles good god its easier to find heroin on floor at a police station than buy a AR15 in those states

The mr73 is still used by the GIGN for an important training exercice: one member must shot a target with this gun and a 357 m bullet at 25 meters (not sure about the exact distance) put on the chest of another member. Le tir de confiance. The non shooter is heavily protect for this shot.

I don't think Ian mentioned that when a team was in a very enclosed space, they found that the ejecting rounds of the semi-automatic pistols broke the concentration of the shooters, so a revolver was thought solve that problem. I also think the teams had sub machine guns, and automatic pistols when they were needed. The MR-73 was for fast, accurate shooting.

Great video. Very informative. If I may add a bit, GIGN is actually technically part of the French army as the Gendarmerie is a branch of the army. GIGN can operate overseas given it is military as opposed to units like the RAID or BAC or GIPN. Being military gives them a wider range of mission capability, they have a paratroop division for example. Anyway, great video. Cheers!
@nicolas2419
@nicolas2419 3 жыл бұрын
The GIGN have a paratroop division, but at its beginning, the unit was a part of paratroop unit : the EPIGN (Parachute Intervention Squadron of the National Gendarmerie). On its patch, you have a parachute to remind that. About "oversea", in the French context, RAID/BAC/GIPN can operate in French oversea territories : Polynesia, French Guyana, Martinique,.... More exactly, these units can operate in foreign territories!

I think everyone should understand guns but natural hesitancy and concerns about their glorification put me off.

We’re still in activity, on the ammunition production machines side, bought by UAE after our last CEO, banks and French government lead’s us to bankruptcy in mid 2018. The light firearm business was stopped in the late of the 90’s, after the commercial fail of the MR93 and MR96, the new French anti gun law and the dismiss of our government to support the firearm industry in favor to Germany (European construction), then they sold to Chappuis gunsmith all the blueprints and machinery to build them (still available newly made, but expensive and less quality). At the time, we made portable missile and launcher, 20mm oerlikon canon, revolver, pistol, sig rifle and many more. Today we still design, build and sell the most advance and reliable ammunition production machines available from the bullet and case cup to the final packaging of ammunition, linked or in cardboard. Still alive after 100 years, and maybe more.
