I always thought the suppressors wearing out so fast in MGS3 was a pure gameplay decision. But now I see that it was also based on realism. They even got the sound right for manual ejecting a casing.15 years later and I'm still impressed by the little details in those games, especially for their time.

@@rzerizrz that doesn’t necessarily apply to collectible firearms at all. It’s definitely nice to be able to shoot them, but there are new production guns with superior metallurgy for that purpose. If it’s a rare firearm or component that you don’t have any way to replace, in some situations it’s better to just take care of it for the historical significance. People thinking like that is the reason Forgotten Weapons has such a rich collection of gun videos. Along with Ian’s diligence, of course.

@@ThanksforcensoringmeKZbin I get that, but, i guess machining and heat treating and such, of a new firing pin, cant be that difficult, if a person, who knows how to, and been doing that.. owns such rare gun...
@ThanksforcensoringmeYoutube
@ThanksforcensoringmeYoutube 2 жыл бұрын
@@rzerizrz the firing pin isnt the only thing that’s going to be subjected to wear/pressure in the least. Most of these classics were intended for older cartridges with lower pressures than their modern counterparts and have a hard time handling the increased pressure. You could reload to original spec, but if it’s something that you can’t replace then I still don’t see it as worth it in a lot of cases. Even if you could machine new parts, they wouldn’t be original. So depending on the rarity, some guns just AREN’T worth shooting anymore. It’s better for a whole group to be able to appreciate firearm history than for someone to get a couple rounds of modern ammunition through a classic firearm before they destroy it.

3:17 huh so that's why you manually pull the slide back after each shot in Metal Gear Solid. Pretty damn cool.
@RyoLeo
@RyoLeo 4 жыл бұрын
If I recall correctly that not why you manually load in mgs 2. It actually has to do with the fact that the less than lethal darts has less energy pushing them out which in turns mean there isn’t enough energy to get the slide to move normally. Also before you ask no it would not be a good idea to increase the powder load since that risk the darts going through the target instead of just the tip going in. So yeah while they probably got the manual sliding from real life the in game reasoning is far different. Still pretty cool anyways

In practice the backside of this suppressor where it meets the barrel would be far less water-tight than a threaded-on suppressor. But a threaded suppressor that used wipes and had some grease on the barrel threads would probably be watertight enough for some swimming, at least at the muzzle end.

On a side note, if I understand the current ATF rules correctly, the wipes are a suppressor component that is regulated. In other words, if you have a wipe based suppressor you are supposed to return it to have the wipes replaced. Being a suppressor component would mean that having an extra set of wipes, is the same as having a second suppressor and would require a second tax stamp. That makes a wipe suppressor not very useful for an individual. If I have this wrong, please let me know but that is the way I understand the latest interpretation to be. Great video! Take Care and be safe, John

I think this has changed. I do remember at one point if you had a “fake” suppressor, if you had a stack of wipes somewhere, they could consider your “fake” suppressor an NFA item. But that was so long ago, most suppressors use baffles now. Since the can is the registered part, you can buy all the wipes you want. But as always, don’t believe me, some random internet “expert”, check with the ATF. They post their “rules” online

@emersonb5764
@emersonb5764 4 жыл бұрын
Shawn R nope, it’s totally doable and not painful at all. Try it sometime. Doesn’t even require that much force. If you ever have to take a shot with the muzzle jammed so hard into your target thatthe slide moves back just a tad, you may need to force the slide shut withthe other hand and hold it there as you fire, to get it fully into battery. Of course it’s better to move the gun back a hair so you aren’t using it in single shot mode but if you have no other choice and your life is in danger do what ya gotta do. I can’t speak for other operating systems like rotating barrel or gas operated or such things, but you won’t hurt a blowback pistol by holding it shut. If that damages it, then it wasn’t gonna last another hundred rounds of normal fire anyway.
@shawnr771
@shawnr771 4 жыл бұрын
@@emersonb5764 I did not think it would hurt the weapon at all. Years ago I saw a 10/22 with a latch that held the bolt shut. Looked like a small version of a screen door latch with a groove cut in the back of the charging lever. Kinda snapped into place. I would just worry about my hand.

The wipes with spacers actually act as additional pressure chambers ... but more importantly, they create an orifice effect. In compressible flow, there will be a wave front propagating from the edge of the orifice hole radiating outward in a cone, which will act as a "step" in the pressure profile along the silencer. So the big main compartment drops the pressure from 35,000 psi down to 3500 or so, then each wipe/spacer stage probably drops it another 500 psi or so so that the gas pressure at exit is under 2500 psi. Just guessing on the actual numbers but that's the principle.

It's not all about making the hole bigger by shooting a magdump through the wipes, or whatever muffler. Noise increases also by heating up the whole can, thus reducing it's ability to cool down gasses, which means more heard bang. With the first shot you also have air in the can to burn some unburn powder residues, which on further shots can at least in theory burn outside the can, thus making flash and bang. Or make bigger bang on the first shot .

I have to admit, this is the first suppressor I have ever seen with 'wipes'. All of the other suppressors I knew about until now(with one exception) were all made(and I am probably describing this wrong) with baffles and additional chambers which would re-direct the gas and slow it's exit from the barrel, so it did not come out as a LOUD BANG! but rather a 'small bang'. The only 'exception' I saw was from a 'true crime' tv show where some young punk murdered his? parents using a designed suppressor he found online that he made with pvc pipe and cut up tennis balls.

I remember in the '80s being fascinated about what little I could find out about (pre internet so libraries and trade magazines and books about silencers) the Vietnam era Smith and the Hush Puppy. My dad served two tours and said he saw some of these, and suppressed Grease guns but never actually got to shoot them. I had my FFL/SOT as early as I could and bought an AWC - Automatic Weapons Company MK9 Hush Puppy and had the chance to talk to both Reed Knight and Phil 'Doc' Dater who I believe collaborated on the AWC thread on design. It has no Neilsen or booster device, although AWC was just starting to sell them.. I think first for 45 caliber. My MK9 is so light it functions perfectly on a Browning Hi-Power with an accessory threaded barrel I got from Bar-Sto. I have my manufacturer's SOT now so I can make and have extra wipes for this and other older wipe suppressors without worrying about the newest kid ATF agent getting too excited. Actually, they have never gone through my whole shop or house... the seven different agents I've worked with just wanted me to hold up various NFA weapons and suppressors so that they could see and verify the serial numbers. Only one guy actually showed interest in a .22 suppressor and I took it apart for him and let him see how it was put together. It had a fresh looking wipe and he didn't ask anything about that, he was more interested in the baffles and how they worked and how he thought they would actually go "the other way in the tube". I offered for him to shoot it into a big wooden box I had in the shop with old Shotgun News's and an old dog pillow but he declined.

@@larryjimbob with a locked action and a brand new stack of wipes, the "most quiet" suppressed pistol is going to come down to bullet diameter and bullet speed. 45 is a commonly suppressed round as it is inherently subsonic, but it is louder than a subsonic suppressed 9mm because of the larger bullet cutting through the air, and once the wipes are worn you have a larger diameter hole in the end of the can for gas to escape and make more noise. So realistically the most quiet pistol you'd be able to find would be a suppressed 22. My Ruger Mk3, Mk4, and S&W Victory with CCI standards are "movie quiet".

If I decide to buy a Beretta class handgun, this would be perfect. Believe it or not, the slide lock also works as a safety mechanism. When you insert a magazine, the slide has to be pulled back in order to chamber a round. But with the slide lock in place, you can't. Which means that even if a kid got their hands on it, as long as the chamber itself is empty and slide lock is engaged, the gun would be harmless. For that reason alone, I have got to get me one of these.
