The 1903 pistols act hardly made a difference to the availability of handguns, as one simply had to buy a gun licence from the Post Office first. They were available immediately over the counter. They were expensive at ten shillings, and the act was more a money raising measure than anything else. Interestingly, the cost remained unchanged for many years. I had to go to a Post Office and buy one for my first shotgun in the 1960s, when the cost was still ten shillings, so far as I remember.

Fwiw my guess would be Hammett has Miles Archer shot with a .38 Webley-Fosbery as a clue to the shooter: it's Thursby's gun, which is part of the exotic provenance and a link to the - in American eyes, rather rummy behaviour of the British in the Far East - but it's also a weapon easily fired by a woman. At the time, the idea of a woman's (ie small calibre) pistol was a trope of clues in detective fiction. Miss O'Shaughnessy is able effectively to use the revolver she takes from Thursby, because it is an automatic. Bogart rather spoils the effect by making it a mucho macho .45.

It often is--or, well, if not strictly a typo, definitely an error. Detective fiction, especially in translation, falls victim to Fantasy Gun Syndrome a lot. That is a really good pistol. Wish someone could reproduce using modern 38 caliber ammo. Really like the way it works and i like break open pistols above all the others.

Kinda feel like they'd have done better to also offer the 8 shot capacity in a conventional revolver
@markh.66873 жыл бұрын
They did make conventional revolvers in WWII, if memory serves me right this morning without looking it up.

@@markh.6687 They made a .38 traditional Webley for target shooting and training troops for the big boy .455 in WWI and WWII

Never heard of it... Big thanks

Shame it wasn’t so popular. It’s a really interesting gun.

The fact that the gun is so unusual and distinctive is an important clue in the Maltese Falcon....

This looks just like the revolver represented in Pathologic (that 2004 russian game about curing a plague)
@TheONLYFeli0 Жыл бұрын
That’s because it is. Also, the game has had a sequel since 2018 which is just fantastic as a reimagining of the original story. Play it on the intended difficulty. I’m on day 10!

gotta say, I love that action.

IIRC some of the James Bond novels also have Bond have what is supposed to be Webley-Fosbery .455 (or .45) revolver as a back up in case he needs something more powerful than his usual carry gun.
@nufumanchu3 жыл бұрын
In the book version of the Maltese Falcon, they refer to the Webley-Fosbery .38 cal, 8 shot. "They don't make 'em anymore."

Ian just straight up memeing as the intro. Ian you're awesome.

Another small reason for the failure might have been size. The Colt .38 ACP automatic (self loading, actually) pistols were significantly smaller than the Webley-Fosbery revolvers, making them easier to conceal. While that would have no impact on military sales, I think it may have impacted civilian sales. Just a thought.

webleys are the sexiest revolvers out there, even sexier than colt pythons IMO

I think the confederate LeMat grapeshot revolver is the sexiest, but this one is really nice too.

I'm a fan of the remington 1875 with the top break remingtons close behind. Rugers GP101 series are the sweetest of the modern for me.

I was lucky enough to handle one twenty years ago, I didn't get to shoot it as I opted for the big boys Bisley target for the afternoon. Good times.

Ian needs to do a video with Matt Easton of Scholagladiatoria. One of his latest videos was even called "Forgotten Weapons", so we know he's a fan.

Combine the semi-auto cam action of this gun, with the auto eject function of the Von Steiger. Sure, it would be completely pointless, but the giggle factor would be totally worth it.
