Also, do not drive a car with outside the province plates in a small town, they rely on fines to balance the books, and figure most people will pay a fine rather than travel to Pitsonderwaterbydiemiddelvannerensdorp court to contest it in 3 months time, seeing as you will be there with a judge and prosecutor, who both get paid from the fine revenue. That's good that you welded that hook on behind the pins. If you need to pick up a heavy chunk of iron that's not so dimensionally large, you can actually exceed the weight rating of the loader if you get in behind the pin and lift it from there. If you go even a few inches in front of the pins, you can lose hundreds of pounds in capacity with the way a front end loader is designed. I once tried to pick up a Bridgeport, which is about an even ton, with a supposedly 1.5 ton tractor loader, and it simply would not pick the mill up with the chain over the front of the bucket. This was even with the bucket curled all the way down so that the center of mass was just a few inches in front of the pins. I slung it over the back of the bucket just behind the pins and it picked it up no problem. It didn't even dog the engine whereas before it triggered the overpressure bypass on the hydraulics. Leverage is an amazing thing.

Why? Because we own its Operating System. I can picture my long dead Kansas farmer, Uncle Bob hearing that back in the early 1970s. My Dad was a B-52 pilot who married my Mom from NW Kansas. He was an AF trained P-80 jet fighter mechanic before he became a pilot. We always had a 30 day summer vacation and Dad loved to drive the REO Speed Wagon truck from the field to the grain elevator. He gave me my first oral lesson in fuel-air explosives while we dumped the truck with wheat dust whirling all around. It was a no smoking area even in 1973. He would help my Uncle Bob, the farmer, if the combine broke down. Usually some bolt thingy in the deep bowels of the “cut wheat...spit out wheat grain” combine machine. I need to look up why it was called a combine. My Dad would dutifully run to the local parts store and retrieve the exactly correct part. While driving back, he would would see my Uncle Bob running the combine and cutting wheat while the Thunderheads were rising in the Western Sky. My Uncle would say something like, “we just jammed a nail in there. Bent it over and got going before any hail came in.” My Dad had a hard time handling that after being a jet fighter mechanic. They didn’t use bent nails. But later we saw what a 5 minute hail storm could do to a wheat field. And my Dad understood. RIP. DAD and Uncle Bob.

I saw a picture / video on the inner net, of one that had either been ripped out or deliberately modified so that it looked like a mushroom that was run over by a John Deere forklift, head splayed open from below... this dude shoved a pen in the tube and was doing all kinds of other weird shit, but he could probably pee with a morning boner. It looked disgusting but I’m sure his sex life was, interesting / unconventional perhaps. I’ll see if I can find a link.... Just kidding, look it up yourself.

@spike001ton Years ago I worked on some sightseeing boats and the beach here was refilled with shingle. It was pumped ashore in a few places and then moved about by the big Volvo Earth Movers, bulldozers and excavators. One day the excavators had made a big round pile that looked just like the were nesting, so I dug my mate in the ribs and pointed out the nesting dinosaurs. First trip next morning a couple of Bobcat sized things were charging about on the shingle, the passengers wondered what we were laughing about.

More like an overpriced Nintendo with an overcomplicated lawnmower built around it. What ya need is a good old Massey or Ford , the ones that come in iron oxide red , have real metal seats , and require a wheelbarrow that hauls around a battery and jumper cables . They seldom give out , can be beat day in and day out , and only require a half gallon of hydrolic to every four gallons of fuel . They don't come with the very contagious stomach virus that seems to show up with the green broken parts . I heard tale that that virus has been bad enough to cost folks their arm and a leg and even sometimes farmers daughters had to do some strange payment practices in mop closets to find the cure . Real rough virus , just glad it's not carried by the the older senior tractors .

I find i put the tow ball in most of the time to stop slings from slipping off the end when trying to pick up thing that I shouldn't be trying to pick up that way. usually with the carry all on the back, with a full bag of whatever is heavy and nearby, but It is usually a futile effort as the rear wheels rarely make contact with mother earth. Oh, first job is to find the hydraulic relief valve, and make sure she is adjusted to withing the safety factor margin of the components aka about 3 to 5 times what the hose has written on it. Just gotta remember that with shiney machines that you want to wind it back to OEM settings before the factory mechanic works on it for warranty reasons.

A loader tractor is far from the handiest utility machine, but as a farmer, I wouldn’t be without one as a livestock producer. Yeah the skidloader is way handler, that’s the tool to use for most applications, but there’s days the loader tractor as an advantage. Plus it’s nice to have a backup loader on the farm.
