I loved it when i was an apprentice, my mate had been on the course and had multiple hours, i had a 30min lesson with an old spark about 2 years earlier and that was all the experience I had. Making plates with thick walled pipes going through them and we had to weld them in place, he was doing them day in day out for days at this point and said oh he'll teach me how to do it. Give it a go first and show me what you can do. All i got told, doesnt matter what it looks like so long as your weld is deep into it. I welded it and it looked like a roller coaster track. He does one and it looks like a bunch of ripples, so we grind them flush and he tried to show me why im crap at welding so he grabbed the plate and smacked the pipe end on the table with my piece, he hurt his hand and mine survived since it was welded in deep. His I barely tapped it and snap, his was only welded on the surface, and poorly at that. At the end of the day, in engineering we dont care what it looks like we care that it works. I still cant do a decent weld but I was sure better than that guy!

Trying to rush a pipe joint with 7018 5/32” as the formation you just ran the end of your pipe into is about to heave 75’ into the pipe and over your drill rod and bit... slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Then you realize the pipe wasn’t cut square and you’ve got a 1/4” gap to fill on the back side. Looking at you, Nova Steel.

Had a metal construction professor tell me once that the pores actually ain't that bad. Since they are nice and round the force lines will pass them with little issue. What does matter is sharp edges and groves since that's where the cracks start during dynamic loads. So spending some time angle-grinding away all the sharp edges will net you a lot better result than trying to get rid of pores. The strange thing is that you can make a weld stronger by removing material.

Just a quick, handy tip: If your slag is getting trapped, you need to increase the angle of your dangle. Having the tip of the rod poking towards the puddle stirs it and forces all of the inclusions and shit to the surface. From the looks of it, you could have gone up a step or two in amperage as well. It looks like you're welding a bit cold. The filler should flow into the fitment, not build up on top of it.

Hey just so ya know, those E7018 rods are meant for AC units. Not sure what you're running but when i was learning to weld they were the only 7018s I could get from crappy tire and they do not seem to get the best results with DC. When i switched to non-"E" 7018s and got much better welds

Wow! a Bob Widlar reference. For those who don't know of Widlar, look him up. He designed op-amps. And that is understating his achievements. Here is some interesting trivia about Bob Widler (from Wikipedia): Widlar's eccentric behavior is remembered in legends and anecdotes which, according to Bob Pease, are largely true. He did practice "widlarizing" - methodically destroying a faulty component or a flawed prototype with a sledgehammer. At the same time, he eradicated all unwanted sounds from his lab by fighting noise with noise. He installed "hassler" devices that emitted high-pitched sounds whenever someone talked too loud, and even blew up an annoying public address speaker with firecrackers. Jim Williams recalled an incident when, after tracing external electromagnetic interference to the control tower of the San Jose airport, Widlar telephoned the airport and demanded they shut down the transmitter. However, the story about Widlar bringing a goat to trim the lawn in front of his office, retold by The New York Times after his death, was incorrect. It was a sheep, not a goat; Widlar brought her in his Mercedes-Benz convertible for just one day, which included a photo op for the local journalists. According to Pease, Widlar abandoned her in the nearest bar; according to Lojek the sheep was "mysteriously stolen".

Removable on receiver, great ! I do the same for my 4x4 front and back mounted recievers. If planning to leave permanently on trailer, may want to also build a hood/cover, to protect from elements, or common low life thief. Was the AvE fabricated plate branded SKOOKem Approved? Hope the receiver mount point is 17K lbs rated - them pesky " weakest links "

That was a fun video. I remebered back to a time when I used to unload the winch on a military 5 Ton, just to grease the cable. I don't think I have had a welder in my hand since I left school in 1981.

Always love the short one there AvE, when a crappy day comes along they are always good for a laugh. I don't care what the pantie waisted sissies out there say you are a good guy in my book. When you get some time wanna help me with an engine swap? My pickup blew a head gasket and is limping by, need a welder to help make a modified exhaust and if they look as good as this one did they will work in my book. I have honestly had worse welds end up in some pretty big I-beams holding up a roof.
