It annoys me that F1 on screen telemetry is a good half second behind what the pictures are showing, like the cars are already around the corner before it shows they are braking, surely it wouldn't be that hard to sync it properly?!

You'd think they'd just delay the picture a little bit to match but at the same time live broadcasting an F1 race is not something we have any experience with and I'm losing a little bit of hair just thinking about what an absolute mission that would be to get setup and manage even without the telemetry factor 👨🦲 😅 - Taz.

From my engineering field experience, it is quite complex. There are many signal processing factors such as modem RF chipsets, encryption, packet filtering, noise figure, etc. that contribute to time delays. Typically, a system uses a common time base and uses that timestamp information to correlate the data feed with the streaming video. To most observers, in order to perceive these events in real-time, total processing time should be done within 100 milliseconds or less.

@@hpa101 Exactly what I would try and do! I presume it's primarily a gimmick to keep all the non nerdy people in awe, not for actual scientific study 🤣. You could synchronise it using the audio from the footage and telemetry of gear changes which would require very little effort from a software point of view but provide very accurate results. It's probably more effort than F1 TV are prepared to spend doing it though!
