Former KTBC reporter talks about UT Tower Shooting | 8/1/2016

Neal Spelce is a member of our KTBC family and was formerly a news director at the station. He was also the reporter on the scene during the UT Tower Shooting on August 1 back in 1966. He shares his experience with the Good Day anchors Dave Froehlich, Amanda Salinas and Lauren Petrowski.

I think it is very sad that these people didn't get the help that they desperately needed. Today when there is an active shooter the people who are involved get all kinds of help and recognition. The folks in 1966 never even talked about it until 50 years later when the movie Tower was created. There is a memorial now for those who lost their lives on that dreadful day due to Claire Wilson and many others who joined her in asking the University to create the memorial. The police in 1966 did not have the communication or any rapid response teams they have today. However, because of this incident, SWAT and other rapid response teams were created.
