No mention of the many students who ran to the their vehicles, and grabbed their rifles. Many would have been hunting rifles, but at least one, and likely more, were military surplus rifles. I heard one of those people speak at a rally in 1994 on the Texas Capital grounds. The rally featured two cannons, which fired several times, powder only of course. The guy who spoke had grabbed his M-1 carbine out of his vehicle, and proceeded to the library, where he found a perch on a balcony. Many of the rifles would have been hunting rifles, in 30-06. As a group, they forced Whitman to keep his head down and to fire through the drains which can be seen on this video. This greatly restricted his field of fire, and also allowed the group of police and an other civilian, to approach the tower. They ultimately ended the shooting.

Is this your rebuttal to stricter gun laws?

@@lukealadeen7836 I know damn well a lot of those students would still be allowed to own a 30-.06 if we had stricter gun laws.

it does not mean a thing to want to do gun laws. millions of vets died to keep this country free an to have right of arms. an to take away guns from all. not all are bad. and people who want to kill people. they will find a gun any way.

Back when, we had REAL reporters. Not what we have now. It's so sad so many young lives were lost including that unborn baby boy. What demons Charles Whitman must have had. The whole story is just sad and horrible.

I've always been interested in psychology. Like what makes a person do what they do, be it good things, normal things, or evil and vile things.. the lines between these things are probably shorter than we like to think.. who knows, maybe all of us are capable of this disturbing behavior. I surely hope not. RIP to all the victims. Their honor will live forever.

I think Charles was overloaded with people around him being his dad beating him and his worry of the person he loved leaving him and his mother and brothers depending on him but Charles didn't really securely have someone he knew that would be there for him? Maybe he seen life as a hassle and everyone is the same? IDK but he had a tumor in his brain and was flip flopping on uppers and downers with the stress of his life and the military, he was like he had 2 sides of him and I truly believe that he did have a good side of him like not wanting to hurt animals and explaining to the world in his letters that he didn't even know why he was going to do what he did, that tells me he knew it was not right and he did it anyway, it's hard to say but I would definitely say mentally he was strained, I feel bad for him in a way knowing about his life and feel more sorry for his victims but he snapped and I think some people don't come back from some things like he indured meaning something in his mind snapped and he felt like he had to go out with it, such a sad story all the way around I mean nobody really wants to see an outcome like that SMH

Maybe American can keep voting weak gun laws? 50 years later, when will America learn?

@suny123boy1 Yes. We should just get used to 7 and 8 year old children's brains splattered across the classroom walls because some right wing nut job wraps himself in the 2nd amendment. After all, guns are more important than children,...right? RIGHT?

@@drk321 you do realize guns aren't the only way to kill people right? Two of the worst terrorist attacks in history didnt even involve guns. Twin towers and Oklahoma city bombing. People will always kill, and always have for as long as our species has existed. Stop with your nonsense.

@@joshuatraffanstedt2695 As many people that died in the World Trade Center attacks in 2001 also died today in the US from Covid 19. Just because there are OTHER ways people die does not mean we shouldn't make America even safer by enacting stricter gun laws which have worked in other countries. You argue like a fourth grader yet I doubt you ever even saw that grade. Keep milking the cows Jethro, you will go far.

@@lemonhead162 Then maybe you can offer a solution to nearly daily mass shootings in America that WILL do jack shit? England, Scotland, Australia and New Zealand all experienced mass shootings and they immediately made gun laws stricter and saw a huge reduction in gun crime. It has been proven and the only thing standing in Americas way would be people like you. Give us your solution or SIT DOWN!
