Former teacher sentenced for having sex with teenage boy

A 36-year-old former teacher was sentenced Thursday after admitting to sexually battering a teenage boy.
Senior District Judge Stephen Dunn sentenced Jessica Lawson to a minimum of two years and a maximum of 20 years in prison. She will also be required to register as a sex offender and attend sex offender treatment in prison, and when she is released on parole.
Dunn also ordered a no-contact order for the victim for 20 years.

Forgiveness doesn't mean what most people think it means. It just means that you let go of the anger, which harms no one but the angry person. I have chosen to forgive many times, because I wanted to be free from stewing about something that can't be changed. That being said, forgiveness doesn't mean that you release the person who hurt you from suffering any consequences for their actions. That's up to God, imo. I just refuse to hang onto the anger of being wronged.

For example, if I break the law by speeding, I may still have to pay a speeding ticket. I don't think that God is harmed by His anger, but my sin does damage my relationship with Him and I should ask forgiveness, much like I'd ask my dad forgiveness if I insulted him.

I don't know enough of the specifics, but there is a big difference between abuse that is forced upon someone, unwillingly, at the age of 16/17, and willingly, notwithstanding that I understand the law in Idaho sets the age of consent as being 18, unlike other states where it is lower. I think a maximum sentence would be appropriate for someone that didn't cooperate, that didn't plead guilty, that had multiple victims, and if the victims ages were a lot younger. These are the factors that go into determining a sentence, so given all that, if this case did deserve the maximum sentence, what about those who do far worse? Hence why there is a sliding scale, so that the sentence is proportionate to the circumstances of each case.

Winston Salem, North Carolina - male teacher gets 26 to 33 years in prison. Wayne Memorial High School - male teacher gets 20 years in prison. Just a small example. You are right that a man would have gotten more time (like she should have) but wrong about Treatment; there are, although most are found in prisons. and they're pretty bad. There are however private ones across the nation. And like any addiction, the individual plays the largest role in getting beyond their addiction. In my book I talk about this and offer suggestions on how to find the underlying causes and how to "re-wire" inappropriate thoughts (which lead to behaviors).

Only 24 of us got diplomas. Started college @ age 17. Had sex with female professor my freshman year (Mid 30s statis? pretty). Both teachers approached me (aggressor). I felt lucky, not damaged. I graduating in 1985. I had heard of this happening. It seemed more like men with female students. It is what I heard, but back then men and boys didn't come out as much about abuse. I know that there were teachers in my jr high and high school who would grade based on what you wore. We knew that there were certain students that certain seemed to really like. We'd all figured there was something going on. No prior that I ever saw, but what goes on today, it wouldn't surprise me that it was going on even then. This is not knew. It just did not get reported as much. In fact, one student married a teacher about a year after they graduated.

Teachers who are given the responsibility to look after under aged children in their care who violate that trust by freaking SLEEPING with these kids should be barred from ever holding a teaching job again, placed on a s-- offender list and serve a very lengthy jail sentence. Either would reduce a felony charge to a misdemeanor conviction. I was a GS-12 Civil Servant. I chose jail. Took 80 hours of Annual Leave. And served my time in-between Christmas Eve and January 4th. I retired with full benefits from the USDA.

At the age of 8, I had read all the books on sex education my aunt, who was in college at the time, brought home for research etc...By the way, no one knew about it. By age 11 I was ready to perform and fell in love with my Math teacher. Never told her, but I was ready for her. She was 25 at the time. Best part, I would have never snitched !

I witnessed a female student aggressively pursue a male teacher over the period of one whole school year. I assume it went on longer than that but I only attended that class for that school year. She sat on the corner of his desk before class began. This was jr high school. I later found out after I graduated high school that they got married.

A two-year sentence seems reasonable to me. When I was 16, this 'crime' would have felt like a dream-come-true. Greater forces than myself made sure it didn't. To characterize it as a tragedy of monumental proportions isn't realistic. The young man can change. So can the former teacher.
