I have to vent a little bit. I love Devin Gardner, but his memory of Rich Rod is fuzzy. Rich Rod paid zero attention to his defenses, so opponents would score on us in like 30 seconds, so we would get the ball back quickly. Our offense was always pretty good under Rich Rod, so we’d sometimes have a decent drive to score. That would happen 20 times a game, so of course we’d rack up the yards, even with an offense that was good at best. Then we’d lose 48-45. Every single game, Rich Rod would call that nonsense middle-school play where the center snaps the ball but the rest of the offensive linemen just stand still & pretend that the ball got snapped accidentally. This is supposed to trick defenses, and maybe it worked once at West Virginia and it was like a great thing that one time. But this is the Big 10. It didn’t work here the 1st time, and it still didn’t work the 15th time. Every single time, our QB would get mauled by 3 defensive linemen and 2 linebackers. Speaking of stupid plays every game, Rich Rod told his center that if it looked like a defensive linemen jumped offside, go ahead and snap the ball and hope for a flag. Well, every Saturday, the center would snap the ball when the QB wasn’t looking and it would bounce off his chest, but no flag. If we were lucky, we’d lose 5 yards. If we were unlucky, we’d lose the ball. Rich Rod wasn’t booted for not being a Michigan Man. He was booted for being a terrible football coach.

The coaching failure was to put Denard at QB. He was an athlete, but should have used as a flanker, optional runner, Wildcat, etc. He was not a good thrower - especially on long passes. The defense started to slide some in the Carr Era, but fell off the cliff under RR. Yes, RR had some offensive capabilities, but he purposely tried to irritate the athletic administration and fans. If he had stayed, he would have dinked a UM secretary, just as he did in AZ, when he went to Tucson. I will never forget that horrid 3OT, 67-65 game vs crappy Illinois. That is when the Maize & Blue Nation knew he had to go. Then, he gave up 59 to MSSU in the Gator Bowl. RR was not the right fit for Michigan, and it had nothing to do with him not going to the school. Bo came from Miami (OH). The coach that replaces Harbaugh will NOT be a "Michigan man". Hopefully, it will be Matt Campbell next year. Bill Martin (AD) really dropped the ball by not having a coach lined up to replace Carr, as everyone knew he was retiring after Hart & Henne graduated. We could have had Les Miles lined up - and avoided all the pain of the 7 years after Carr. Harbaugh was good in 2015-16, but just lost his fire in 2017, despite making $7 million+/year! He needs to go!

If that what you believe that his offense would beat up lesser team. Then what about school that did the same. Now when it come to middle of the road team and profile team. His offense would shred them period if his defense play a tap better. Think about it, Urban First year at Ohio State his defense wasn't that good but the team manage to win 12 games with zero loses. I blame traidition of UM that led to RR downfall.

I basically agree with his statement about the Rich Rod era.....Michigan did not have the type of lineman in 2008-2010 to run and block for the spread. Also Rod did not worry enough about his defense. But last year in 2020...I think there were deeper problems in the locker room revolving around social issues and such. And imo a blind man should have been able to see that Joe Milton did not have "it". Cade McNamara should have started the season at QB.

I’m an Ohio-born-and-raised, lifelong Buckeye fan, and I can honestly say I miss those nasty, intimidating Wolverine teams of the early and mid 90’s. I want UM and OSU ranked as the top two teams in the country going into The Game every year. It’s better for the rivalry, it’s better for the Big Ten. And, finally, I’ll add OSU endured 13 years of hell against TTUN. What the Wolverine program is enduring shall pass.

I’ve been saying this for years. We did not give RichRod the time nor money to do what he wanted to do. Michigan wanted success so fast that they jumped off the ship too soon. Had Rich Rod been given a few more years to get the things going, we wouldn’t be in the slump we’re in now. We need to stop sticking with “Michigan only coaches”. Not everyone goes to Michigan and we’ve missed out on some good coaches simply because they weren’t alum. Traditions great, but winnings a tradition as well and we’re sucking at it

Devin Gardner going to Michigan hurt his NFL chances big time. I saw him play in his Sr year of high school against Steubenville (Ohio) Big Red. The Red was riding a 68 game regular season winning streak and we’re back to back state champions in Ohio. We finally got the lead with 1:05 to go. Inkster screwed up the the kickoff and took over inside their own 5 YARD LINE. Gardner looked like an NFL veteran….his leadership, his calmness, and his skills were amazing. He drove his team 95 yards to win the game against a team that was hands down better than his team. Yes he was a great runner….. but all he needed in college was to be taught to be a pocket passer. That’s what he was. By forcing him to be a dual threat QB it weakened his ability to be a great pocket guy. He was better as a drop back passer when he was 17 years old and a Sr in high school than when he left Michigan. He was a classic case of a coach not developing the talent that god had given him. As a buckeye fan, knowing this guy was going to Michigan scared the hell out of me.

I despise m with every fiber of my being. But the "courage" Gardner showed enduring the physical beating he took during the 2013 MSU game where m had - 48 yards Rushing, and the sportsmanship he displayed when J.T. Barret broke his leg, in the 2014 game, and Gardner came out and checked on him, showed ALOT of CLASS. Much respect. MR. Gardner!!

As a die hard Buckeye fan, Devin Gardner is my favorite michigan player. In 2013 he was basically playing on one leg in a game they were supposed to get destroyed in and he just kept coming. That game should have never been close and he single handedly put them a two point conversion away from beating #1 Ohio State. In fact, I will always believe that the amount of effort it took for that Buckeye team to beat him is why they lost the next week. There was nothing left in the tank. It was one of only two times I've ever watched "The Game" and came away with more respect for a Michigan player. And the second time was the class Devin Gardner showed the next year when JT Barrett went down. Having said all that, and to address the topic at hand, I have said for years that the mistake michigan made was not hiring Rich Rod. It was firing him. Yes, they went 3-9 in his first year. But then 5-7 the next and 7-5 in his last season. Who is to say he would not have had the same 11-2 season Brady Hoke did in 2011? And Hoke's results were almost the perfect inverse. He got worse every single year. Rich Rod was never really given the chance.

He’s so right. I remember watching games when Denard Robinson was playing and they were in a slow paced pro style. Also the Tom Brady effect on the defense, he’s not only giving inspiration to the defense but he’s making the right decisions and putting his defense in a good spot more often than not.

- 48 is one of my favorite games, ever, as an MSU fan, but I always felt bad for Gardner. Always seemed like a good dude who was humble- not used to seeing that in AA. Wish we would have done that to basically any other Michigan QB in the last 20 years, or so. Gardner ran into a nasty defense, and his team seemed to quit on him. Even when I see replays and highlights of that game, I worry that he's getting hurt. Credit to him for keeping at it, but it was like watching a fighter getting pummeled, and his corner refusing to throw in the towel.
