Yes they can build tires that last the whole race, but there is spectacle in having pit stops, it adds strategy and safety car strats etc. It is done on purpose that one set of tire won't last an entire race. Also changing tires gives you better grip. because tires wear out. It adds way more than I just said, but it is a long list.

It's in the rules they must change tires (to a different compound) at least once per race. (Unless it's wet conditions).

I'm happy that more people are learning about Formula 1. I've been watching for decades and most of those years, the average person had never heard of Formula 1.

@2:40 Redbull is a classic underdog story who did things differently, made it to the top, then fell back when Mercedes got it right and dominated, and with perseverance, Redbull kept their heads down, focused on themselves and climbed back to the top and now they are dominating the grid more than anyone to a point of boredom. But as someone who saw the growth story of Redbull, it surely is amazing journey and it's commendable. And noone can't deny the success, efforts, smarts and struggles of the team to reach where they are now.... At least till 2024.

They have to mold the set to the driver's body so that it is comfortable. If the drivers run over bumps and curbs (as they need to while racing) and there are points that don't conform to the body then it will cause high pressure at those points on the body and extreme pain in a short period of time. Their bodies are already subjected to extreme forces. Imagine it as someone punching you 300 times in the back in the exact same spot over the course of 2 hours. It would be torture. So when the drivers spend four hours to mold a comfortable seat is a very good investment of time.

The tyres come in different hardnesses, and some come with treads while others have none (slicks) The tyres that are used depends on the race conditions. Slicks for speed, hardness for length of time they last and with all the variables in between. "Wet" tyres obviously for when the track is wet and slicks for when its dry. The problem is when to change, is it still to wet for slicks (as the track dries out) or is it time for Wets as it starts to rain lightly and stops etc. Hardness of the tyre is denoted by the coloured band around the side of the tyre. Red=soft, Yellow =medium, White= Hard, Green= intermediate and Blue for full wet. Then they are pre-heated (cold tyres give less grip) and the pressures pre set. No set of tyres lasts the length of the race. Thats just the tyres! The more you look, nothing is at face value, everything is designed to the enth degree. Much of the total cost for teams in F1 is for the logistics of actually moving everything half way round the world to the next track. Garages, offices, hospitality suites, computers, electrics and data frames all the thousands of staff which all goes via Air and ship. Its all dismantled and re-erected at the next track. Usually within the same week.

The thing is, that longer lasting tires would have less grip. The using up the rubber of the tires is what gives the grip. Basicly, the softer the tire, the faster it is done, the faster it is over a lap.

When air is squeezed thru narrow slot, its pressure drops. You can drop the pressure more by speeding the air up.

They actually make the tires purposely not last very long just to make the races more exciting and make the teams have to do more pit stops. It also leads to more action when one car has fresh tires and others have old tires leading to easier passing/ overtaking etc.
