I think it’s great that Forrest is basically unable to get PTSD due his simple mind and positivity. As you can see, he was a tunnel rat, and he didn’t come out with any psychological scars. Sure, he saw people die, but that didn’t really scar him so much as it made him sad.
@ollie5113 жыл бұрын
Hi Cap'n Cake, I really like that comment! You bring up a good point I had never really thought of before! Forrest Gump is such an inspirational movie, and I quote it all the time. My brother actually has Autism, which makes me connect with the movie even more (I know Forrest did not have Autism, but him and my brother relate in that they are both disabled). I actually posted a video on my channel 6 days ago that is almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup). You see, there's a band named Family Of The Year, and they used their hit song "Hero" for Richard Linklater's 2014 movie called Boyhood. For my video, I used "Hero" as background music while showing various scenes from Forrest Gump. Aside from matching song lyrics with movie scenes, my intention with the video was to create something that is unique and heart-felt. If you have a few minutes sometime and are interested, here is a link to the video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/haOQpHyfg6aBj8k If you don't check it out, no worries at all! I won't be offended! But thank you so much in advance if you do see it! Have a great day, and stay safe!
@nycsp2 жыл бұрын
Great point indeed!
@charliep51392 жыл бұрын
I disagree. I think he does have PTSD. When he's talking about the ambush and Bubba, he ends the story by saying, "Bubba wanted to be a fishin' boat captain, but instead he died right there by that lake in Vietnam..." and the scene ends and the sound of helicopters echo out as the camera transitions from Vietnam to Forrest at the bus stop bench slowly looking up towards the heavens and then Forrest says in kind of a low, sad voice, "...and that's all I have to say about that..." If you talk to vets that have PTSD Forrest is there with imagining the sounds and re-living the moment and it takes him a bit to snap out of it and come back to reality (see below). Then the man listening to the story says, "I betcha it was a bullet!" and that snaps Forrest out of it and Forrest goes, "a bullet...?" and the man says, "that jumped up and bit ya!" and then Forrest is back with us and he says, "oh, yes, sir. It bit me directly in the buttocks!"

Apperantly, Robert Mcnamara started a program during the Vietnam war that allowed the military to take in soldiers who they normally had to refuse, such as people with mental disabilities or low IQ and such. Can we all take a moment to appreciate Forest's professionalism as a soldier during this part of the story. We see he is not very bright, brave, or subtle in a lot of things throughout the movie but he actually took well to his training and we see him fitting in really well. The Fact his lieutenant had no problem telling him to check out that rat hole and how Forest goes in with that gun and light shows he could depend on him to do the job as well as anyone else in the unit. Later at the battle scene we see he knows what to do, has no problems firing at the enemy, and later bravely rescues his fellow soldiers without hesitation.

Let's be honest guys. The Vietnam war had the best soundtrack, best rifle, and best uniforms. Everything except the honor and dignity given to those by the veterans.
@roryslaine78962 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you said except the thing about the rifle. Unless you mean the AK... The m16 was a notoriously unreliable weapon. There's a reason the AK is still in rotation and the m16 was practically phased out by the end of this conflict.

I met up with some of these guys in the China Fleet Club (1968) in Hong Kong when I was on R & R (Rest and Recuperation) from duties on the Chinese border in the Northern Territories - Kowloon (I'm from UK - they were on R & R from the war in Vietnam). Some of the horror stories they would relate were horrendous. I did have a good rapport with one American in particular. I recall he was from the 101st Airborne (I was UK 2 Para - so we had something in common) - alas nothing ever came of our short-lived friendship. I often wonder if he survived that war.

"And we were always looking for this guy named Charlie" I died on the floor laughing...XD For those of you who don't know, during the Vietnam War, the Americans gave a code name for the Communists, Charlie (cuz theirs a 'C' at the front, so they just decided to give it an English name). The Viet Cong (VC for short) is code named "Victor Charlie" by platoon squads, searching around the fields and jungles. It is basically "Military Language".

I didn't understand it back then and I don't know if it is directly mentioned in the Movie, but now I realised, Forest was part of the Project 100,000. Knowing this historical fact makes the movie even sadder then before.

whoever did the wardrobe for the Vietnam scene was spot on. The uniform and gear is authentic looking for that era. Forrest is to big to be a tunnel rat, they usually picked the shortest, skinniest soldier to do that. Anyone the size of Forrest (Tom Hanks) would get stuck in the tunnel.
