OMG, it's SO painful watching KZbin. People do all this fancy editing and then BOOOOOOOOM the unnecessary "Outro" music plays and nearly blows your speaker system, because it's always at level 11 volume. You have to turn the volume up to the max for many podcasts, until their end credit music plays and then the volume destroys a whole city block. I can't handle it.

Finally a review of the CBX that doesn't exaggerate it's dimensions. It's only an 1" wider than my 80's Suzuki GS1150, and that's at the cylinders. Down low at the crankcase ends it actually has more lean clearance. The throttle response really is immediate the CBX carbs were the ultimate in carburation perfection. 45 years of ownership and I'm still in love with my 79 only my demise will end that.

Once again Ryan has come up with a gem of a video. As a former owner of THREE CBX's, one '79 and two 81's. I found them to be actually no more difficult to keep running well than most other machines of that era. The sound was intoxicating, and once sorted, they were reliable. Getting old and feebler, I sold my last one after 20 years of ownership. Good memories for sure.

Having graduated from Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in the mid 90's, I can verify that the school had 4 of these. AND to get out of the basic classes and into your "elective" picking one of the manufacturers to concentrate on, you had to do a valve job AND sync the bank of 6 carburetors on a CBX to move on with your schooling.

Why can't a motorcycle engine have 1 intake and 1 exhaust manifold like car engines? Why do they need 6 carbs and 6 exhaust pipes?
@alexandermoschonas2597
@alexandermoschonas2597 11 ай бұрын
@@chadkline4268The 6 exhaust pipes isn't true, technically cars also have a an exhaust pipe per cyl they just call it a manifold because they're welded together, in bikes they're not but it's the same part with the same function. 6 carbs help because the inside cyl run hotter than the outside ones and this changes slightly the amount of fuel they need. Cars can get away with 1 big carb because the engines are way bigger in displacement and less rev happy than motorcycle engines. The smaller the engine gets and the more revs it reaches the more fine the tuning needs to be so having 1 carb per cyl helps with that.
@chadkline4268
@chadkline4268 11 ай бұрын
@@alexandermoschonas2597 ok, that's a good answer, but it doesn't explain 2 carbs in parallel twins 🤪 I am kidding a little. I think your answer is as good as can be expected. It sure seems like a lot of added complexity and required resources with little benefit. Thanks, excellent analysis 👍

Beautiful video! I was 16 in 1982, and was working as a box boy, and I was riding a Honda CB125. Fred, the stores butcher, had a CBX just like the one in your story. I loved that bike! Fred put the bike up for sale, and I had most of the money, but Fred wouldn't let me make a payments on the last $400, and my parents wouldn't loan me the money. It was close enough to being mine. Almost six years ago I had the opportunity to purchase two pristine examples of the CBX from an old man in the hills of Puerto Rico for the price of what one well-worn example went for back then. The logistics of getting them back to the States was too daunting at the time, but seeing their current prices and legendary status has kept me second guessing not pulling the trigger. Back in 1980, I was so tired of chains, I purchased a shaft drive bike. The CBX was in the showroom and I really wanted it but I wanted a chain less. The salesman really wanted me on the CBX because they had trouble selling them. Rumor had it back then, new old stock CBXs could be had for cheap. A couple of years later I got tied up with a small group that rode early on Sunday mornings. In that group was a guy that rode a CBX. It wasn't stock. I still remember hearing the howl of that engine while the bike quickly got smaller in my vision. Distant memories that are as clear today as when they were made. All these years later, could have and should have been sorted out. I didn't. I still love the memories. Thanks for bringing those memories back with this video. Merry Christmas to all!

I purchased a Black 1980 CBX off the showroom floor. It was an awesome engine on a so-so chassis. I added an Ontario Moto Tech 6 into 2 header and the Honda engine guards. It sounded like a Porsche Carrera! Otherwise it remained stock and perfect until I sold it in 1992 with 13k miles on it. I rode that bike from Iowa to California and back in the summer of '81 by adding a bolt on windshield and a backrest / luggage rack. Stayed in KOA campgrounds every night. It was a trip I've never forgotten. When I sold it I gave the guy the original pipes, factory service manual , and the tools and shims for valve clearance adjustments. I wish I would have kept that bike, or at least the extra "stuff" I threw in, but that's life. My CBX did have an appetite for voltage regulators! I get to still enjoy riding on my '01 FZ1, '05 Sportster and '08 Goldwing. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season, and pray for safe riding for all in the New Year! I owned a 1979 CBX for 14 years. It was a great bike. To properly appreciate its sound, you need the 6-into-1 exhaust system. It positively howls with that system and sounds like a Formula 1 car. It sounds much better than the stock system or even that after-market 6-into-2 system that your test bike had. My CBX was in pristine condition. I sold it in 2004 for $5500 which at that time was a good price. If I had only known how much they would appreciate I would have kept it. If we only know then what we know now.

Bikes these days are incredibly capable and packed with tech but they all seem to lack character or an automotive soul even. Being a Traffic cop at the time meant that I could, actually, wring it out. It was the smoothest and fastest thing I had ever had between my legs. But I didn't buy it. I knew I would kill myself on it one day. In 2012 I bought a CBR1000F. That's when I found out what fast really meant. But I never thought it would kill me. @@ooklamoc4411 and he repeatedly emphasized that that was a problem with people, not the bike. That the bike was perfect, in fact so perfect that it highlighted the shortcomings of the person riding it. I know what you mean, but the biggest point of the video was that the bike had exactly zero shortcomings.

The perfect bike does not exist. For example the motor not vibrating at all must be good for some and not enjoyable by others, the same as having no torque on low rpms vs a lot of power at high rpms or having a motor too big and heavy for the chasis. Some people may love it but others don't, there is a motorbike for every age and everyone but non is perfect for all.

My goodness what a perfect capstone video for the year! Everything. Is. Perfect! The subject, videography, soundtrack, commentary, everything! I just put my bike up for sale because the costs are overwhelming the returns; but watching your video, I kept catching myself smiling, hoping the 9:39 mark wouldn't come so soon, while remembering all the visceral joy that my bike has brought me during our short riding seasons. Thank you, for this piece of motion picture gem, for continuing to share the joy of man-machine connection through riding! To the F9 team: Merry Christmas!

Had a silver one in 1980 and it was some machine but I was never comfortable at speed or tightening corners, especially with any weight on the rear, like luggage - then we add 80's brakes and tyres to the mix in wet weather. That said it was an amazing machine and would have kept it but for rumors of cam chain wearouts and the associated running costs. Years later I got a HInda VF500. It was almost as fast, similar top speed, and infinitely more stable and settled. To this day I regret selling it. Thanks for this review, I think you hit the nail on the head.

Awesome video! You should do one on the last of the litre sportbikes without any rider aids whatsoever. Not sure what year that'd be, but I remember my 929RR didn't have any, not even a steering damper, making for some very hairy off-ramps and late-fall rides on wet pavement (no abs, no TC, no quick-shifter, no slipper clutch) with 130ish HP on hand.

As someone who owns several CBX1000 (and a track day bike) and works on these for Customers day in day out this video is an excellent summary of the CBX. A well sorted CBX Z model is actually not as bad in stock form as some make it out to be. I have ridden many on the track, with Prolink 39mm forks and a CB1100F swinging arm it handles exceptionally well for a 70's design. Yes it's old technology but the 6 cylinder passing 9500RPM on full chat is something to behold for the rider and spectators alike.

Back in the day my best friend was a Honda salesman which meant I always had the pleasure of riding the new toys, when the CBX came out it was mind blowing, the sound was incredible. When I got married in 1982, I drove down to his shop to pick Ray up as he had best man duties. Its was May 1 and he was working a deal wearing his rented Tuxedo. I said Ray, we are late, lets go, the guy quickly bought the bike, and Ray was like, lets take the CBX to the church. By the time we got to the church we were quite disheveled, we drove right up to the door, got off the bike and strolled inside, 10 minutes late. Quite the entrance.

Back in the early 80's my roommate had a 78 CBX 6cyl, painted black. It was a huge bike in those days. I drove it once and only down Ottawa's Queesnway for a few miles. It was too much power for me as I was driving a 78 Yamaha 650 Special (still driving it today with 98k kms on it). I thanked him for the ride but passed on other chances to drive it. He even said it was tough to tame when holding the throttle open. His friend also owned a silver model and was an engineer/mechanic, so he did all our tunes up back then. He had great attention to engine maintenance and specifications and kept those CBX's running smoothly for years!

One of my favorite motorcycles. The 79-80 were pretty much that awesome 6 cylinder engine with a Honda 750 suspension. Straight line performance was the goal, not hustling through the twisty's. 81-82 were the Sport Touring years with the larger front forks (43 mm's) and the Pro-Link rear suspension, detuned engine for more lower mid-range torque, full fairing & bags. Always wanted an 82 model with the white paint accented with blue & black striping. In SoCal in the mid-80's, you could pick up leftover 81-82 models in the $3000 price range with 79-80's for $2500. You could have bought a Baker's Dozen of CBX's for about the price of a 2024 Harley Road Glide. I wish I could time travel back to 1985. 😀 As usual, great content and video from Ryan and FortNine productions. I loved the CBX taking off from the highway.

I’ve got an 81 since new. Love it. The only issue is the 6 carbs and keeping them in sync. Lately can’t find a local shop to work on it. The only downside. Rides great on the highway and comfortable for my 6 foot 6 inch frame. I think it’s too large for many riders. It was expensive in its day, but I waited until the 82's came out and they were a bargain. Sadly when they stopped production, a year or two later you could buy these for half price. Now they command a good price for a clean machine. Great machine.
