I hope everyone understands just what a potential mind field F9 is setting up for themselves with these videos. Because F9 is also a retailer, it is difficult to be honest about product and test them in public like this. If anyone of the manufacturers does not like a result or feels that they do want to be shown in any of these videos, they can pull their product from the store: meaning Ryan and the staff at FortNine will lose their livelihoods, potentially. Let's keep supporting them so we can get at the truth and push the manufacturers to give us the best possible gear they can.
@khoatran9804
@khoatran9804 7 жыл бұрын
The silver lining is that, as a retailer, F9 has a leg up on moto publications. Suppliers can be unhappy with this video series, but if they pull their products, they lose out on an important retailer in Canada and that would hurt them more than it would hurt F9. Moto mags/etc. rely on supplier ads, so the general perception, at least, is that they aren't as harsh in reviews as they could be. While this series is obviously done in good fun (most gear is never going to be subjected to a flamethrower, for instance), I do very much appreciate Ryan's honesty here and in the regular product reviews.

Na screw that. If the supplier stops giving fortnine test samples, that tells me the supplier has something to hide. If that is the case, then I won't buy a SHADY built product made or involving that supplier. Fortninr Ryan is just doing what ALL of us bikers wish every manufacturer would have the guts to do.... TEST their product in front of the public. Kudos to Fortnine!

I have an N44. Yes. They are loud. But I live in FL and riding in the summer is pretty bad. The vents in these are amazing and worth the road noise. Just a few miles an hour purges the helmet of hot air and replaces it very well with much cooler air. I use an Ncom so I listen to music anyway.

If you're looking to replicate the swing you can bolt a mallet/hammer at the end of a rod/wooden pole and pull it to the same height every time. This also allows you to calculate the Newtons transferred to the lid. However.... you wouldn't get to let some steam out whomping it..... haha

I used a Nolan helmet from 1988 to 1997 in California and Spain. One of the best overall helmets I’ve ever owned. I had two of them. My son loaned them both out to friends and we never got them back. But his friends used them for 4 years. Obvious quality build to last that long. Made my famous freeze run from Rota Spain to Madrid. 20 degree weather. Worked just fine without fogging at all. That was in January of 1993 I believe.

I own a N44 since three years now and I love it. Huge field of view, much bigger than any other helmet. I wonder why most of the other helmets have such a narrow FoV, I call that a safety risk. Is it loud? I have another helmet that is is much louder, but it's a very cheap one, thought. I can make phone calls up to about 100 km/h and understand my counterpart, but it gets too noisy when I drive faster. Ventilation is amazing! The vent on the chin has three positions and is very easy to open/close. The ones on the top are hard to operate with gloves, though. But I barely need to operate them while I drive.

I owned it and have to disagree with comments saying its a noisy helmet. The truth, this helmet is amazingly quiet, WITH the chin curtain intact and visor down. Maybe those find it noisy maybe due to wrong size, owns a alien shaped head, or evaluate noise by using helmet visor up. Awesome vid as usual. I suspect part of the reason the chin bar saved the melon was that it did partially break away...this is the design theme for F1 cars and the like to carry energy away from the driver. That said, to lose it on the first hit and not have it there for a potential second strike would be a bummer

just a thought, but after the first drop, isn't the structural integrity of the shell compromised, thus (possibly) affecting the ability to withstand/hold-up on the subsequent drops, even though those next ones target a different area? not suggesting that it's necessarily enough to affect the results, but in the real world, after a significant impact (such as in the drop test), a helmet would be (or, should be) replaced. obviously, that's not an option for your testing, but something that could be mentioned.

Hey Ryan, Another quality vid, love the porn music and the slow mo smile...Question, after first dropping the helmet, don't you compromise the integrity so subsequent drops are bound to fail? I was always taught a helmet was only good for one hard knock so I would expect any fall after the first to fail.... ???

Hey Adam! In theory, the answer is yes... a helmet is bound to fare worse after it has already been dropped once. But as we do more and more of these tests, we're finding that it doesn't seem to make *that* much difference in the real world. A lot of the time we test helmets that fail the first test and pass the second and third ones. Of course in a perfect world we'd use a brand new helmet for each impact test, but... $$$. I think you should remove abrasion, heat, and puncture resistance. They seem unimportant to the requirements of a helmet. Maybe spend more time on impact strength than anything. I say abrasion because their so no situation were the abrasion on your helmet would be a problem in a crash, nor should you care how usable the helmet is after being damaged. A helmet should only be good for one crash, that's what it is designed for.

All of the helmets with wind scoops also have to realize that these are also bug scoops. Therefore, there must be a method or way to flush that crud out. I have yet to find a way to flush it out without liquid flowing around my ears for a few rides. I don't care much for the wind scoops because they just aren't that effective. Would like to know why you don't like N-Com? I have had a Nolan N44E without the chin bar. I have been overall happy with it, even though the washable liner seem to wear out faster than a non-washable liner. I've taken some slaps to the head from slow speed falls and it's still intact. I've also taken some rocks and very large bugs to the shield; no scratches or dings. I'm buying another. Just a bit curious about the N-Com though.

Unfortunately we didn't edit together a full video for that one! When we tested that jacket we were still figuring out our filming method. In short, the Rainier only failed the puncture and chest armor tests. ~RyanF9

I was hoping the chinbar test would be successful, since they homologated to full-face standards. Good swing. Whew!

I find the N44 very noisy. Must admit I don't have much to compare with but my impression after first ride is that it is worse than my old N40. Can't say if it the vents on top that cause the loud wind noise or what it is. I had the vents closed.

By the way. You could slice it down for inside damage

Ok this is crash test. Fine. I would however like to see if that chin bar is easy to attach when you wear the helmet.

Thank you for answering. I think I will check out the X-lite version of this model. X-lite x-403 has 3 shell sizes.

according to Arai dropping a helmet with nothing in it should have no effect. it changes when you have weight inside

Since ya'll did the Nolan N44, why not give the LS2 OF569 a shake? I mean its similar enough but a different price tag. I'd like to know how it compares
@Jezzyftw

Apparently the normal LS2 OF569 is a 3/4 helmet, the LS2 OF569 SCAPE is the one that's very similar. Lol

what would you say is a great fitting jacket? I'm looking at the joe rocket reactor thanks to you beginner gear video,, but being that I'm 6'3 and 170 lbs i figure I'm pretty much built about like you and you said it was a little short which always sucks on the bike. Wondering if theres a better fitting alternative to consider for us tall skinny guys. thanks and great videos!
@FortNine
@FortNine 7 жыл бұрын
Hey! A great alternative is the Icon 1000 Basehawk (fortnine.ca/en/icon-1000-basehawk-jacket). Same flexi-athletic material, even better armouring and a perfect slim fit for us skinny guys. I wear a medium in that jacket. Only downside is that it's quite a bit more expensive :( I chat about the Basehawk in this video by the way (kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3WTgoiBj9yZqaM). Cheers! ~RyanF9

Sorry, if the chinbar detaches, even on one side, that has to be a fail, because a typical "get off" involves more than a single impact. If you are sliding down the tarmac facedown with a half detached chin bar, you're not gonna have much of a face left. Also this test completely misses the basic Snell type test which is dropping a steel bar or similar object from a height on to the helmet and seeing if it goes through or cracks the shell. You guys only dropped the helmet on the floor. That's not the same not at all.

The Snell penetration test is garbage anyway dude the bsi and ECE standards both disagree with it as a relevant metric same for the ACU gold standard

Fuck the suppliers man (to an extent), us riders gotta know what works out there, can't take any company at face value, and shouldn't when your life is being put on the line with there gear.

Hey @Ryan, great video as always. But why did you change the way to test impact protection ? It does not seem so fair for the others which you slammed with a bowling ball + baseball bat. PS this helmet is super big surprise, I mean all those passed tests for super modular helmet.. I mean this is crazy.. I was looking at the video and was like: Ok, now lets see this helmet fall apart and show proof that modular helmets cannot be as safe as full face ones. But this proves that they can, you just need someone to run crash tests on them :D

Awesome review, I'm really addicted to your channel dude! By the way, the black EPS is not an "Italian thing", it's a different density one from the white EPS. As far as I know, Nolan combines black and white EPS in different places of the helmet deppending on the required density in each place, wich is pretty cool!
