I bought the VHS copy of the film at the mall in Reno. The cashier was a man who looked at it and said, "Excellent film. I saw the stage play in Toronto, 1969." Did not know it toured nationally with a troupe. The Queenie character in this, looks like he went on to play the same role in the movie;(hauntingly beautiful opening theme song). Holy shit, Don and Sal Mineo.

And Michael Greer, a phenomenal talent who never had the film or television career that would have been open to him should he have stayed in the closet. Sal Mineo was about as out as you could be in those decades without risking being out of work completely or pigeonholed as only good for tiresome stereotype roles. At least the ones he performed brought some underlying self-respect to the roles. The fact that he was actually able to make a living out of live performances is a testament to his wide-ranging talent.

Thanks for posting this clip of the stage production of Fortune and Men's Eyes. It's nice to know that at least a small portion of that production has been preserved. It's a shame that there's evidently no film of the entire stage play, but even this short clip is very worthwhile.

No, this little bit of footage was shot specifically for a 30 minute program on L.A.'s channel 28, called "Theatre Beat" which was hosted by Hal Marienthal. Apparently the show was 30 minutes in length and the host interviewed Sal Mineo on the program as well, but that bit of footage is still currently lost/missing. Enjoy the footage I found, because this is probably the only in existence of the Sal Mineo directed version of the play.

@@psychedelicanxiety8011 I'm a massive collector of rare Don Johnson film footage, especially of his early career in various cult films. I never in a million years expected to find a film of this notorious play - but was searching for his 1968 Kansas college film "Into The World." Because I'd saved a 60s film search on ebay, this film popped up in my e-mail feed. I offered the seller $100.00 on the spot, and he had no idea what this film was or where it came from. He just told me Sal Mineo and Don Johnson were in it, I couldn't believe it! Then I had it digitally transferred with a 2K scan. This has to be the rarest and most unexpected film I've found of Don Johnson. Thanks for the interest.

So, Michael Greer clearly understood why his film career tanked. It appears that all he desired was to be gay and play roles like Queenie, therefore, it's he who killed his own career. "Homophobia" had nothing to do with it.
@christmastree68172 жыл бұрын
clearly it did because if there was no homophobia then no one wouldve been bothered by him wanting to just play roles like Queenie
@matsumoku12 жыл бұрын
@@christmastree6817 I don't think anyone was bothered by it, maybe other than some fans who didn't want him to go that route. A person is free to tank their own career by overplaying their sexuality. I think the average person doesn't really care who you have sex with behind closed doors. If you think that's not correct it's because the elite push different narratives at different times. Hollywood wanted rock hudson to be a manly leading man, and that doesn't work so well when the actor wants to be a queen. Greer could clearly have been a leading man. People don't want this to be the truth they'd rather call everyone a bigot and homophobe and virtue signal.
@christmastree68172 жыл бұрын
@@matsumoku1 if that were the case then people would tank after flaunting their heterosexuality but they usually dont
@matsumoku12 жыл бұрын
@@christmastree6817 Don't you think Mr. Greer did more than just flaunt his homosexuality? The little information we have suggests he was crass to people who didn't deserve it and he did the opposite of what his agents and handlers told him to do. Not to get too deep into it, but there is two things going on with hollywood -- one is they have a narrative they want to push (which changes over the years) and the other is the tension between that and what the public generally wants. Women mostly like the hetero romance movies. Men generally like naked women and they don't even care who they are having sex with, and men like the action moves that tend to have hetero romance, if any at all. That's just how it is, and pushing homosexuality in every movie today won't change that.
