Old or new? That is the question. As the BMW GS celebrates its 40th anniversary, we grabbed the latest R 1250 GS Adventure and wheeled out Chris's trusty steed, which costs half the price - the R 1200 GSA - to see if it's worth saving £10k...

I’m 31 and have a 1250 GSA. Yes they get a lot of criticism about supposedly being an old mans bike, but, I’m happy with mine. It’s far more capable and practical than other bikes I’ve owned, but still plenty of fun to ride. The 40th anniversary model isn’t for me though - although I don’t think a GS is a good looking bike anyway, I think that yellow style on the 40th anniversary model is a bit too much... For all the critics out there - try riding a GS then make up your mind!

As a fellow GS fan boy... gone GS salesman... due in large part to you and his videos: First, thank you both. Second, while I mostly agree that the 2018 and older R1200GS accomplishes 90% of what the current 1250s do, it's the connectivity package with the TFT screen that helped really push me into buying a 1250. As a machine, they're very close. As a comfort, the new bikes are far better.

A few years ago at a track day I saw a guy who was on a GS, not slow at all and was soundly passing a lot of guys on more "sporting" bikes. I stayed with him for a while, right up until he starting getting brave and was touching the head guards down and trying to toss the beast into the kitty litter. He never did but I gave him lots of space after that, It was definitely different to see at the track but the bike did just fine.

I ride a GS Adv. from 2008. That‘s the aircooled one. I love it. It does everything so well. Ok, it‘s a tractor compared to the new 1250, but it has Caracter! Here in the Swiss mountains nobody gets away from me. I‘m faster than most riders wenn it gets twisty. When you know what it can do and you are able to ride it well, it is a hell of a bike! Most ridiculous piece of furniture with worst engineering EVVVVER done on any motorcycle. Absolute overpriced stupidity in square. Luckily motorcyclist ain't ride this garbage which is the only good thing about it. If they want to be green don't make them. #tipoftheday There is not a bike what falls apart as well as this car way engineered disaster like all the world lowest quality over engineered German cars. German "taste" and world lowest level "design" is another horror story in entire motorcycle industry . Everything about BMW GS is just insulting. GS is just straight forward dangerous what never shouldn't get COC there from there so many crashes and deaths with GS'ses all the time. Where very you meet GS rider on the road it's immediately like Volvo man - OK here we go we going to all die soon because of their raiding/driving skill about they surely have world highest opinion. By you can always recognize any GS owner without even asking what he rides thou fashion police highest rated suspenders give them away 100 miles. :D GS real life weight alone is one of the top biggest failure and catastrophe in entire motorcycle history as side the whole HD circus. :D Superiority on the road - is like in stupidity? Or like there is NOBODY who have less analytical thinking, worst taste and clue about motorcycles and have spend money in even more brainless way as GS owner? :D :D You have 20K and you buy GS instead KTM Adv you really need urgent medical help no questions asked.

i completely disagree ! 1. you can't and should not have compared it like this !!! the argument that the old bike is half the price doesn't stand !!! full stop how can you even say that is an old bike for fuck sake , yeah is still mighty good like all GS are even 20 year old one is still better tahn some japanees plastic thing !!! 2. I bet in 5 years time when they will come up with a new one you will say the 40 year anniversary model is better cos is half the price !!!! buuuuhhhhahhhaah 3. is not all about money , some people will still ride their old gs , and be happy and good for them very good , but some people will just get the new one cos the new one is taking things to the new level in so many fields and it's more open to a bigger audience and also more versatile !!!!

So the 1250 isn't worth a 10k leap if choosing between a £10k used 1200 and a £20k new 1250, but what about if deciding between a £10k used 1200gsa and a £14k used 1250GSA? Still not worth the extra £££?

Crazily it’s only been a bit over 15! - they didn’t really get their modern popularity and rep until a recovering heroine addicted space wizard took one around the world with his mate! Heck 25 years ago they were a very different class of bike really. Although I guess you could argue that cost alone typically leans most BMW’s, triumphs etc toward dad bike status lol. I think really though long way round just sped up adoption and the shift away fro. Sports tourers - I recall there was an insurers report last year or the year before that showed big adventure bikes on the road had doubled in the last 10 years, was after the long way round. Ultimately they’re the SUV of the 2 wheeled world and people have shifted to them for the same reasons they shifted from sedans, and it’s got nothing to do with riding on dirt lol

I had GS in my mid-30s and it was a good bike (mostly) but not right for me (nothing to do with age). It was great to ride but was physically too big for me which I could sorta deal with but it also had an intermittent stalling issue that the dealer couldn’t resolve so I swapped it for a Triumph Street Triple (maybe not the most obvious transition) and never looked back. I’m actually half considering going back to a 1200gsa coz I’m sick of the 1250 nagging me all the time. I started with GSA's when I was way to young by all accounts, have had seven of them now and well and truly qualify age wise to own one at this stage. Currently have a 2020 which cost me way too much to trade up to but I think well worth it in the end as so the extra oomph puts a smile on my face every time I ride it. Would slightly amend the strap line to say the GSA is "The Best All Round Bike in The World, not the best at individual or particular things but where it only one bike that has to do everything, the GSA is the one. I have all sorts of bikes, been riding for way more years than I can remember and have other bikes including sports bikes and some classics. By far the best all rounder is the GS. BTW what tyres were on the 40th Anniversary.

I bought a 2010 1200 GS in 2011 and had it for 5 years before I stupidly sold it. Since then nothing comes close, so I'm getting another one!!

I think this may be an older video than the one i saw a week or so back with you getting very romantic with your GS and how much you were loving it, in fact it really reassured me, that i do not need a KTM or Africa Twin, i need a GS. This creeps up on us all and sooner or later, we all succumb (bet you couldn't of spelt that first go) to the magic of the GS, my question eventually is, do you still have this bike or have you upgraded? i am about to buy a 2020 GS1250 Rallye TE, but wonder if i should save a few grand and get an older on. I am not sure why i am asking someone i don't know and even less sure whether i will take any notice, but it would be nice to see you what you think. Many thanks.

Great video guys! Silly question what are your thoughts on petrol bikes being banned in 2030? And what are your thoughts on electric bikes and the sad demise of motorcycles 😭😢😤

6-months ago I rode with a tour group from Pretoria South Africa to Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania. 13-days. 7- of us. 2,200 miles. I rode a brand new BMW R1250GS - a rental. My cohorts all rode Suzuki V-Strom 650's. We are all older expert dirt riders with many years experience riding dirt in the Pacific Northwest of WA, USA. This was our fourth year riding Africa. I can tell you that at the end of each long day I was so glad to get off that ungainly, porky, top heavy understeering monster. My colleagues on their Suzuki's had much more pleasurable days. Swapping bikes they were all glad to be able to get back onto their smaller Suzuki's. I dumped the bike 4-times in really rough going. Really rough. In turning in our bikes, 2-weeks later I was billed US$1,100 to repair the damage I had done to the bike. The best bike in the world - not in my books. Sorry.

268kilos. Two hundred and sixty eight. 2,6,8. That's almost 100 kilos heavier than a Gixer. And it looks top heavy. Btw the "top box" isn't a BMW invention - you have simply to add on a "rack" and fit the "top box" with "bolts". I don't get it at all. Baffled. Totally baffled. I'm 62.

After riding for 24 years, I believe I understand what I love and hate about riding (excluding track riding) every day and touring. The journey has been full of fun, regrets and lots of money. Finally riding the R1250GS I understand why they are so very popular, for me, it is the best bike I have ever ridden. I will be ordering one this year, if you are passionate about riding and adventure this needs to be on your list to experience. Excellent review lads, thank you and thank you BMW. Safe roads for you all.

Bought my first GS at 33....raised a few eyebrows. Sold it four years later and immediately regretted it. So bought another and now I know I’ll always have one in the garage. Nothing else like it for commuting year-round and touring.

As a GS owner I find the bikes completely overrated, especially considering the cost, and I wouldn't own one out of warranty. People love to bash KTM for quality, but considering in less than a years ownership I have already had my keyless fuel cap replaced, both my mirrors, my wireless key fob and am now looking at having the engine replaced due to the engine paint lifting I'm not impressed with BMW's quality control. I found the 1290SA to be faster, with better handling, and found it more maneuverable even at low speed, but I went with BMW for their reliability. 🤣

Back in the 80's, when I owned a new K100RS, I used to say BMW stood for "Best Motorcycle in the World". ;) Love these "joint" rides where we hear the banter between you two. Excellent content, mates.

The only reason the GS is labelled as (and mostly owned by) "old men" is simply because of the price. Too expensive for your average 25 yr old. People wouldn't consider the Panigale to be an old man's bike, but I'd be suprised if there's much difference between the age of the average rider. The same can be said for super cars, which are all owned by fat balding old men........................and poncey footballers

At last, both back again on bikes filming it and talking bollocks ....marv. Just need to get Boothy upright again and its all coming together (please dont film that). ........ I also get what is being said about the huge cost to change to the latest model from a perfectly good one that Chris has. My 2016 plate 1200S Multistrada GT (its a late reg 2014 bike)does everything i want in a bike but to get the new V4 Multi would mean about 20K for the same spec i have and makes no sense apart from "I've got a V4 ner ner"

You do know that all these ridiculous "safety" warnings were a MUST because of people suing everything and anything in the hope to squeeze some money out.. and because of the media attention and thirsts for sensational, they really succeeded! So now there's a sign even on pizza boxes explaining to open the box first before start eating! 🙂

I'm 30 sec or so into this vid and you already mention comparing a 2014 GS that you really, really, really LOVE so much that you've done an enormous mileage of 5.5k to a New one, then pointless is mentioned and i see 30 min long, so more waffle to come, so NO THANKS. How long does it take you to get it down from your mantlepiece?

These modern BMW R1250GS's are just too tall, and too heavy. A real challenge for your average size rider. Handling them in a parking lot is a nightmare. And they are absolute pigs off road.

Err,..... No. GS stands for Gentlemen's Scrambler. The original designer was an anglophile and only later had BMW it renamed to Gelände und Strasse. Fact.
