I used to marshal at Croft in late 70's early 80's till it closed. the chicane had a marshal post right on the edge of the track on the entry, and it was made of railway sleepers, the other side of the track was made of sleepers cut into 2 foot lengths with hardboard nailed on them and painted with chevrons. part of the marshals kit was a hammer and a tin full of nails. oh and no radio's, but telephones you had to crank the handle to dial
