A tough economy during that period. Smack in the middle of the depression. The old saying that tough times don't last, but tough people do. Thanks Ken!

1935 was a very tough year. Many businesses closed their doors. The Dust Bowl was in full swing. Yet as you mentioned, the tough survived it.

This was the final model year (1935) that Ford had wire wheels and external horns. All new Ford cars were now exclusively V-8 powered with the 4-Cylinder models discontinued. With 820,000 units during the 1935 model year, Ford also substantially outsold Chevrolet for the final year until 1957 (very close in sales). As was typical of all manufacturers, the bodies of the new Fords were now lower, wider, and moved forward on the chassis with the same 112-inch wheelbase. Despite Plymouth's use of all-steel construction, hydraulic brakes, and independent front suspension, sales of the new Ford rose as the worst years (1932/1933) of the Great Depression were now over. The 1936 Ford would see minor updates with the same basic body but sales still slumped.

Note Edsel showing his Father Henry the "new " Ford. Transverse leaf springs mechanical brakes & all that good stuff-but at least it could be had with a V-8. That overheated.

The first 10 horsepower Ford in the UK for 1935 was the Model C/CX. Designed in Detroit it was styled like a miniaturised V8 but had an 1172 cc 4 cylinder engine. In its day, the Model C/CX was the fastest in its category and its engine was used for decades in all kinds of applications.

The larger American Ford was available in the U.K. at that time... where it was considered a large (but not posh) automobile.

@@kensmithgallery4432 Yeah well, Barrow did write Ford, saying the V8 was peppy, and his favorite vehicle to boost. Maybe if he had lived long enough to commandeer a '35 model, who knows what praise would have been forthcoming? Just the same, I bet Mr. Ford was irked by having a desperado give his product a left handed endorsement. Imagine the irony, if you can... Clyde Barrow making a promotional film espousing the merits of a 1935 Ford!

I never understood why Ford put insert bearings on the rods but left poured babbitt in the mains up too late 1936 LB motors.. Had a few flatmotors and they weren't very good....Nothing but trouble...

He said the V8 had the economy of a 4. Well, not in fuel economy. Those flatheads were strong smooth motors, but fuel efficient they were not.

I'd love to see Ford try these tests with anything built the past 2 decades. Would be plastic pieces everywhere, along with broken springs, blown struts/shocks, and maybe some dislocated ball joints ... not to mention all the squeaks and rattles in the interior afterward.😂
