Forgotten Fossils

4 жыл бұрын

I've just got back from 6 days fossil hunting at Lyme Regis and Charmouth. Luckily as we got there a big storm had hit the beaches called storm Brandon. There were plenty of finds if you're willing to get wet. Lots of ichthyosaur, plesiosaur and ammonites. It was great fossil hunting at Lyme Regis.

I never thought of putting beach finds in fresh water, after you soak for awhile can you see the salt leaching out as it dries and crystallizes on the surface? Ammonites and the nautilus look amazing!

Thank you, I didnt notice any salt leaching out. But i know Dorset Pyrite can decay very fast so wanted to give my finds a good chance at surviving.

@@ForgottenFossils quite amazing my friend, I'm from Wisconsin USA we don't have too many fossils like this around my area more so smaller cephalopods and crustacions/brachiopods definitely an amazing location for you to be able to find those things
@tylowren2005

@@gavinbell1381 just wanted to add the fossil remains you see are from ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs. Where as the shells are from ammonites. This layer of rock dates to the middle Jurassic when most of Europe was under a shallow, tropical sea. Lyme Regis is the best place in England maybe even the uk to find fossils as well as finding marine reptiles and other squid like creatures including ammonites and nautilus.

Really nice finds! Been to Charmouth several times myself but never found bone. Do you know where the best place to look is? Thanks!
@ForgottenFossils
@ForgottenFossils 4 жыл бұрын
I've only spent a week there but you can see from the video i found a decent haul of bone there. The trick is to look in the shingle and rock pools for bone. It's a massive help to recognise the various shapes of the bone, verts, paddle bone ect and the bone texture (Honey comb like structure). Good luck!

What point does the tide have to be at for the main fossil strip of Lyme Regis to become inaccessible?

Where would you say is the best place on the beach at Lyme Regis to find marine reptile remains most importantly vertebrae?

Fossils wash up at any place on the beach at lyme. If i had to pick one spot i’d say the big landslip close to the steps right at the start.
