What worked for me is staying within sight of the food I put out. Sometimes about fifteen feet away. I'd bring the food in with me. Then I'd gradually decrease the distance. I just sat on my doorstep without approaching them. Many opossums and raccoons around my neighborhood and I didn't want them hanging around my house. One of my strays was a four year old tom, and it worked for him.

If you’re adopting a kitten, always get at least two. They need a companion to help them learn to cat, and it’s a big help in teaching manners. If they hurt the other kitten, they’ll hear about it and learn that’s a no. Too many people don’t know how to teach a cat that no part of another living being is a toy, but the co-kittens will play with each other and learn what level of aggression is acceptable. They also comfort each other, snuggle together, and play with each other. Kittens need lots of vigorous play time and it can be hard for a human to give them enough time and fun even with multiples, so having The Best Kitten Toy Ever, another kitten, is a big help.

The most important thing is not to grab them and hold them down. Give them time to get used to you and be comfortable. We have a cat who jas been traumatized due to being forced into being held and pet using food. He runs from people all the time and if he is being given a treat he will rin away at any slight move. These techniques do work if given proper time.
