lil helpful tip here ! if you are adopting a new pet, try buying a medicine syringe for your pet and every few days or so fill the syringe with something like a treat (i use mashed bananas for my rabbit) so if your pet ever needs medication from a syringe, they won't try to avoid it because they'll associate the syringe with treats :) hope this helps (ty for 2.5k!)

Adding onto this, make sure you only bathe your kitten (or cat) if you really NEED to. E.g if they have fleas, aren’t cleaning themselves properly (only usually happens with old or really ill cats), etc. They’re very good at keeping themselves clean and bathing them with water too much is actually bad for them. If you’re not sure talk to a vet! :)

Tip from a person that's raised 15 kittens: Do not introduce your kitten into a large space in your home immediately. Isolate your kitten in a small room like a bathroom so it can feel 'safe' and less overwhelmed, and allow them to WANT to explore. Edit: I should mention, you dont just leave the cat in there alone! Spend as much time in there as possible. Eat on the floor, read, play switch, whatever. If you have another room that is also small, like a small bedroom, this is also good. But bathrooms are usually the perfect size.

Pro tips from someone who lived her entire life with cats: - NEVER such bleach on a space where you cat peed, specially on spaces where you don’t want them to pee again because they love the smell of bleach, use sanytol instead - teach them to go into their “cage” to go to the vet while they’re kittens by leaving their comfort items in it ( blankets, toys, catnip etc.. ) so you don’t struggle once you have to put them in - put just a little tiny bit of catnip or bleach into their litter box when they’re little to teach them to pee in it - get them used to have your finger in their mouth so you don’t struggle with giving them meds ( life changing I swear ) - also this is basic but PLEASE RESPECT THEIR BOUNDARIES, if you cat doesn’t want cuddles, let them be, if they wanna be alone let. Them. Be.

Quick tip for bathing! When you have to bathe a kitten, you should introduce them to all of the materials you will use. Also, before you let the kitten into the bathroom, have the faucet already running with warm water so they aren’t startled and turn into panic/survival mode when they hear it turn on. Let the kitten play with the water, and then slowly and soothingly bather them, using soft coos and words help. If you’re lucky, the kitten will actually stay calm in your hands, if not, they still will express their dislike for the bath, but they will be much less stressed and make things easier for both the kitty and the owner!

You can also put a towel in the tub since they start to panic when they're on a surface that they can't cling to. Also, if you don't want fleas to wander to the head, you should start washing the neck to make this "barrier" so they can't wander.(the kittenlady has a video on this)

I highly recommend getting 2 kittens together! We previously adopted a single female kitten and we encountered a lot of the problems you did as well. The second time around, we adopted 2 kittens from the same litter and they keep each other company and get a lot of their energy out by playing with each other! They've learned that biting and scratching hurts each other so they rarely scratch or bite us :)
@aster56004 жыл бұрын
I really want to adopt from my local humane society, but I'm not sure if there are any littermates available. Is it okay to adopt two same-age kittens together from different litters?

@@aster5600 yes, I would double check with the adoption counselor at your locale humane society but I think if they are the same age and are kittens, it should be ok for the most part. @missjmc5124 жыл бұрын
@Avdrxiy yes I know what you mean. I used to be hesitant to get two because it would cost more for food and supplies but I found that the benefit really outweighs the additional cost and some supplies can be shared between both cats. My two cats keep each other company, play with each other, and learn from each other (one of my boys is braver than the other and I think my one cat would not be as brave if not for his brother!). It's especially helpful if someone is not home all the time so they have each other to spend time with. Whether you and your family end up adopting the two kittens or two cats who are siblings, best of luck with your adoption journey
@Savannah-4 жыл бұрын
Unsolicited advice about scratching and biting lol: kittens learn from other cats (mothers and siblings) what is too rough when playing. They learn this because when they're too rough playing the other cat will cry and stop playing. So, if you have one kitten and it's being rough, even if it doesn't hurt right now (it will later lol) you should let out a high pitched sort of Yelp noise if it is being too rough and hurting or puts out it's claws too much. Don't pull your hand away because that could be seen as play. Just Yelp and usually it'll startle the kitten to stop. Then remove your hand and temporarily stop the play. Be consistent and your kitten will learn :)
@jeanienguyen15434 жыл бұрын
Kalei Suzuki usually it’s best to get littermates or 2 solo kittens that may have been fostered together!! otherwise you can’t guarantee that the kittens will get along as well, although many kittens the same age are playful and can learn to like eachother! i would say wait until you can find a pair of littermates bc it will def be worth it🥰

Potentially helpful thoughts ... I usually give my cats baths once a year in the summertime ( before they start super shedding) or if they get into something. I find that they are mostly frightened by the running water ( it's super loud to them), so I usually fill the bath or basin with two to three inches of warm water and then I bring them into the room. My cats actually enjoy the water itself but hate the noise. They'll actually walk into the shower with me. I trim their nails and brush their teeth and fur before baths. I give them tuna after and try to make it a nice day for them. The other thing I did when they were young is I got them on my schedule in terms of food. Since I work from home they eat three meals a day at 7:45, 3:00, and 7:45. Wet for brekkie and dinner and dry for lunch. To train them I made sure that when I woke up I didn't immediately feed them. I gave myself an hour to putter around the house and play with them and pet them. Even if I wake up late I try to wait at least 10 minutes. I have Alexa make a sound when it is time for them to eat and they react to that sound. Even though they do follow me around when it is close to dinner time... It has made it so that they can sleep with us at night but they don't bother us in the morning until Alexa says it's food time.
@Blue-me8vm4 жыл бұрын
tbh I would recommend you to skip out on that kibble lunch, the wet food you're feeding twice a day should be sufficient, dry kibbles might fill their tummies but does nothing for their health, I also feed mine 2 meals/ day, 75g of supplemented raw meat each, but kittens are little eating monsters that need to be fed anytime they want (going through growth spurts)

@@Blue-me8vm they eat a high quality ( high protein/low phosphorus) grain free dry and since their wet food is like $3 per can its cost effective for me to feed that way. That way they each get one 6oz can plus an 1/8 of a cup of dry a day. My lazy one is 12lbs and my active one is 11lbs and those are healthy weights for their age and breed. They get raw meat as a treat only. Mostly wingtips. My younger one doesn't like raw meat ( except for chicken which he can't eat). It took a while to get the right mix for them. =)

Things that helped my cats anxiety when i brought him home the first time: 1. Introduce ur cat to ur house ROOM BY ROOM. By doing this ur cat doesnt get overwhelmed. We kept my cat in the bathroom for the first few hours as I sat with him in the bathroom till he got more comfortable around me. Also place ur litter and food in the room you're doing this in. 2.Once your cat is more comfortable with your presence, open up the space a bit more. I opened him into my living room area. 3. He then slept in m room with the litter and food there so he felt comfortable sleeping near me. 4. Eventually we allowed him to free roam around the house and by this time he trusted us completely

@@poopoofarter there is no need for a bath unless they’ve been picked up from the street or otherwise neglected. the best way to know whether it is needed is to bring them to a vet as soon as you get it. like, always, ALWAYS bring a new pet to the vet as soon as possible, if its a kitten; their immune system will still be weak and developing and the chances of health problems are huge. but even with adults you need to know what you’re dealing with. but, truly, new kittens should not *need* a bath unless youve adopted them from someone irresponsible or you picked them up from outside somewhere.

Kittens allllways go for your hands and leave you with scratches, as she gets older she will realize your hand is attached to you and slowly stop. I've always found that with kittens, although I know the attitude with torties is real heh. She is likely gonna attack a tiny bit when she isn't in the mood but I've always found as cats age they learn to be more gentle with you and generally only use their paws with no claws and lightly bite, my cat somtimes bites my hands when we play (I'm an idiot and somtimes use my hands as toys with them) so he will lightly bite me, but honestly he has never broken skin on purpose. Kittens are just alot less aware of how their claws can hurt you, but that's ok! It's just a phase all kitties go through and as life continues they notice their pet human doesn't like being bitten or scratched and will lighten up on you a bit. Also kittens tend to be alot more messy than cats, just like kids they are a bit akward and don't fully know how to control their body so they can end up making more messes with litter. Honestly though kittens are like children, they are messy, akward and aren't as aware that they can hurt others. But just as kids grow out of that phase, so do kittens.

Tips: 1. To get your cat to scratch on it's scratcher, you can spray catnip on it or sprinkle some on top 2. To stop cat from scratching your personal items or any unwanted places, spray with any citrus scents or lavender 3. To stop cat from scratching you: •Get nail caps which people call "kitty soft paws" • maybe she's scratching you cuz you might be using your limbs to play with her (watch kitten lady and cat mojo on more tips cuz they're REALLY helpful) 4. Get a friend for your kitten preferably from a real rescue or shelter this time to be sure of health and personality. Getting a friend for your kitten lets you have more time for yourself, stops rough play like scratching and biting, makes them happier as well as more behaved and is honestly 3× more fun with HALF the work🤗 5. To stop urine spraying, spay uni cuz this usually fixes the problem
@toff15683 жыл бұрын
Just here to add that cats are normally neutered with 6 month of age, you definitely shouldn’t do it too early. Also: 1. to avoid cat’s jumping on tables use sticky tape in the beginning! 2. Always have some cat grass at home if your cats is an indoor cat to help with digestion and hair balls. It also encourages your cat to not chew up your other plants. Still only have non toxic plants at home, you never know what looks like a tasty treat to those fur balls. 3. I personally wouldn’t use nail caps, kittens should learn how to use their claws and what damage they do. Just never use your hands to play with them and stop giving them attention if they chew or claw your hands or feet. Some scratches are still to be expected with kittens, they are still learning, but if your adult cat is well socialized scratches shouldn’t be a common thing. 4. Yes yes YES, I’d always encourage getting two cats from the same litter or ones who already like each other at once, cats may be solitary hunters but they usually don’t live completely separate from others. Many shelters (at least in my country) often have pairs of cats they only adopt out together. Introducing a second cat later is also possible but a little harder, best do it when they’re still young, but there are lot’s of tips and guidances online!

We've always had cats growing up, a few tips I've picked up over the years when meeting a new cat: a) let them come to you, on their own time.Being up in their grill puts them on edge immediately.encourage children to do the same and save tears later on. b) when a cat looks at you, make direct eye contact with them (don't look away), and slowly consciously blink.i count to 3 when blinking and do it a few times until they look away. This mimics natural cat on cat behaviour, and is a sign of trust (angry cats NEVER look away or blink at each other instinctively). c) let them have a few spots which are quiet, warm, snug and away from other pets, kids, noise. Don't invade these spaces. Let them feel safe there and come out for love and attention when they are ready-this will calm them long term! d) if you can't handle the energy and attention a kitten needs (its a baby after all!) Or the idea of committing to care for something for a full 15+years then instead, consider adopting a grown cat. They are often toilet trained at shelters, de-sexed, the shelter should be clear about their personality(so you know what your getting), and need loving homes too!

Cats can pant for many reasons, some extremely serious (heart attack, poison, shock) and some completely normal (playing, minor stress, too warm) and often depends quite a bit on an individual cat's response. I highly recommend having a regular vet that you can consult about symptoms like panting, which can be very complex and difficult to diagnose without training.

I also give them treats afterwards to reassure them that what was happening in the bathroom is a good thing. You did really good and amazing for a first-time pet/ cat owner. I had my owner for 16 years I never gave her a bath. She never did stink, get oily, or get sick. She went to her vet every year for her check up and shots. She was an indoor outdoor cat (spayed and had her own claws). She was a proud kitty and would let me know that she was a great hunter by leaving little carcasses at the door. There was only one time she brought in a live little mouse. She was having her fun with it then my husband tried to catch it and the cat got bored watching him and let him play. It was hilarious 😂😂. She passed and left a hole in my heart that I just recently filled with not one but two kittens. They thankfully have adopted us and fill our lives with laughter and amazement every day. To be owned by a cat 😺 is to know that you are loved. Thank you Lord for these precious animals.🙏 Thanks to everyone for the tips. I think each of us will learn the best way to manage our owners.💕

Don't worry about the scratching, they do stop scratching you as they get older, they learn to play without hurting you. As for beds, yep... don't waste money on beds unless you plan to buy a covered one (cocoon style!), for an uncovered sleeping option your bed, couch, cushioned chair, pile of clothes, pillow will do... but they do love a cocoon style sleeping option, I can almost guarantee if you buy her a cocoon style bed she will most definitely love it and use it :)

I think a huge lesson i learned about cats is that all cats have different personalities. I adopted a cat thinking cats will be low maintenance, love cuddling, and less active as compared to dogs. My cat is the exact opposite. She demands specific food or she’d rather go hungry, she prefers to be alone and only ask for pets when she feels like it, and she demands for play time every night.
@picholasphoa30223 жыл бұрын
...and remember the cat beds you bought but they never use? That can be a very useful to stop them from going to certain areas. I gave up trying to make my cat sleep in the bed, so I put the cushion behind my PC so she wont go there, and it worked like wonder lol

guys don't let your cat out just in the middle of your house. they are SO much less anxious when you let them out in the bathroom with the door closed and just let them adjust to that room for the day, then introduce them to the rest of the house at their own pace. they're much less anxious this way and won't really hide.

watching this video, i forget (and take for granted) that so many people grow up without exposure to pets. i had cats and dogs as a child so a lot of the topics covered are just common sense to me (again, cuz i grew up with animals). when you're introducing a cat to a new home, a popular strategy to help them acclimate is to start them off in just 1 room (usually a bedroom) and allowing them to get comfortable before you open up and introduce them to the rest of the home. also, during the bathing segment, it's good to note that running the water at a much gentler/quieter/softer level vs. full on would help avoid some of the struggle/fear. alternatively, you can also bathe them in the sink in a shallow bath (without constantly running the tap) and only turning the faucet on at a low level for the final rinse. it's unfortunate that the previous owners didn't do anything about fleas / deworming / fixing, but that's actually a fairly common issue when adopting very young kittens from average households vs. breeders vs. a pet store / shelter.

This video helped me so much ❤️ This is my cat story: So I was never a cat lover. I liked them though. But few months back, my cousins adopted a cat. It was really sweet towards me and I really wanted to adore him. So my cousins inspired me to hold that cat as I was scared to hold it because it can scratch me. Then I held him and It was one of the best moments of my life. Then one day that cat came to me and sat on my lap and took rest. It was amazing!! I started to love cats so much that I was wanting one for myself as well. I prayed everyday so that my parents agree to let me adopt a cat as they’re not super fond of cats. Then few weeks ago, I saw a cat for adoption and it was meow at first sight and I was being crazy to adopt it. I was so scared that someone else might adopt it before me . I asked my parents and surprisingly they agreed and let me adopt it. So this September I adopted my cat and he is the sweetest little bean. It feels like he’s been made for me. He gives me new experiences everyday; makes me learn new things and makes me love him even more every time he goes to sleep. I learnt a lot about cats and I love them so much now. They’re so precious and They’re so adorable. I love each and every animal but cats are now on the top of the list. If you made it till the end , THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I really appreciate it.

FYI: Uni is 100% calico. Calicos are tricolor: white, black, and red. Tortoiseshells are duel color: black and red. Tortoiseshells don’t have any white. Calicos have thousands of different patterns. A calico can even have one primary color, with little touches of the other two colors. Another version of these colorations are the diluted versions, which are less intense colors. For example, grey instead of black and cream instead of red. I have a dilute calico named Bridgett. She is primarily charcoal, with white chest and belly, and cream markings on her collar bone and nose. Even though she’s almost entirely grey, the little touches of white and cream makes her a dilute calico.

If ya want, a good other way is to just call your cat a tortie w/white (kinda also as white is a different gene than any other cat colour)! In the end, coat is not what matters. I don't even see the term calico thrown around the genetics-related chats I see anyway, no idea how about you. Tortoiseshell is a different gene combination, white is a different gene - and calico is just a name, same as tortie/torbie! I personally more often call cats calico when they're a black tortie with white and kinda big spots around their body, but that's just my opinion. also, fun fact, grey cats are actually called blue!

@@Colbyw74 Ginger can also be called red in cats. Like when you say someone has naturally red hair. - you don't mean red as like a tomato. "Orange" cats being called red (or red tabbies, but that colour always has stripes anyway) is actually genetically correct.
@lindseym.91913 жыл бұрын
Fun fact from someone who breeds papered Maine coones: You’re wrong. Tortoiseshells can absolutely have white, it is a very rare coloring but it exists, the more common ones are a torbie with white, which is a tortoiseshell with tabby markings. I have two of these and they are VERY expensive, rare coloring especially for a breed like a registered Maine coone. Please don’t misinform people.

It really matters how well they were socialized in their early weeks, that's when kittens develop their skill set&attitude to all new things for their whole lives. Responsible breeders familiarize their kittens to traveling, vets, children, being handled&groomed&medicated and all kinds of different stressors they might face in life before sending them to their new homes so they will adapt well and have a happier life.

I know this video was 2 years ago now but super important for anyone getting a cat: Citruses (lemon, lime, grapefruit, etc) and Onions (onions, shallots, garlic, etc) are both little-known toxins to cats. It's unlikely that they'll ever go for either on their own, but for their safety, make sure they're stored away and never within reach of your cat
@mathildebruneau-audet22023 жыл бұрын
her scratching problem is actually due to the fact that you separated her from her brothers and sisters too early. To make sure that kittens learn all the ways of being social and playing with others, they should stay together for the first three months of their life

my bf adopted his cat when she was ~5 weeks old and she has a major scratching problem rn (and frankly, doesn't know how to play nice). the only thing we really can do is keep her claws clipped, try to buy a scratcher to put near our couch, and get her energy out so that she doesn't have a major scratching/energetic episode. That being said, i grew up with a cat that was ~10 weeks old when my parents adopted him and i don't think he had a scratching problem. i'm not sure if a kitten needs to be with its siblings for 2-3 months, but at least 10 weeks is ideal.
@birgittazandhers92573 жыл бұрын
In Sweden we have a rule saying that kittens are not to be separated from mom and siblings until they're 12 weeks. In the case of Uni she would have been moving way to early no matter what because of the man who owned the mama cat. At least she ended up with a loving and caring person who gave her all the patience she needed to develop into a beautiful young cat.

Here is my cat journey (owning 5 cats) My first time getting a cat was in the year 2019, she would always hide under the bed, tv stand, table etc. I recommend you to not cover your unders, cats hide to feel safe It takes time for cats to adjust. Do not bathe your cats daily because it’s not necessary, cats bathe themselves every day, you should only bathe them if there’s unnecessary dirt on the fur. You should always put your cat on you to gain more trust to you whiles bathing them, even if it's worth getting yourself wet. When you get a cat you should look at the tail movement. Tail movement is very important it could either tell you if their mad, happy, scared or sad. When getting your first cat, you should make them look around even if they hide (don't remove them!) Cats take a lot of time to adjust to people and new places. Cats get bored seeing the same thing everyday so you should play with them daily, when you cook you should make them smell the food your cutting. Cats tend to be curious with new things. You shouldn't let your cats go by outlets they could start chewing it which could lead to being hospitalized Don't force your cat to do anything it doesn't like, cats come with different hobbies Some like to go on walks some like to go in cars some love to play etc. That's all I know for having cats for 2 years now thank you ^^
